Remake loses atmosphere, gains... nothing
Poppysma19 February 2022
Despite the quote from Theophile Gautier's La Morte Amoureuse, cameos by Caroline Munro and Lone Fleming, and the well-cast Vampyres, this remake is almost complete misfire. All the Gothic atmosphere is replaced with cheap and almost amateurish digi look, dull scenery and ugly setting where the vampettes live. Soft porn grinding is still there, so are the brutally bloody killings - sometimes even approaching torture porn territory.

Verdict: sadly goes to category Useless Remakes.

Just sucks......

I love a good vampire flick so I was tempted by the title. All I can say is this "just sucks". Its sucked dry of quality scripting, narrative and the acting ranges from passable to truly awful.

Suffice to say the only thing this film feeds upon is your time and not in a good way. 2/10 from me.

Foreign female vampires
kosmasp18 June 2022
This sort of feels like a remake of 70s movies with the same title. But to be honest there have been quite a few erotic movies in the 70s with lesbian vampires. So this is maybe something that was gone for a while, but it was merely sleeping in the dark - no pun intended.

So after all that lurking, maybe you have to be forgiving when it comes to the acting of it all. The accent is not helping, unless it is a thing you'd consider "authentic". That said, a lot of nudity, a lot blood (the throat cutting effects in the film are quite well done and the movie knows it) ... I reckon there are worse movies. Especially if you don't mind the non-plot you are being served or the non-actors trying their luck to act ... is that a pun?

A total disappointment!

I had high hopes for this remake of Vampyres, knowing that it had been written in collaboration with José Ramón Larraz before his death in 2013.

Unfortunately this film is a complete let down, failing in every way!

My advice would be to watch the 1974 original on Arrow Video's latest 2K restored blu-ray.

Pathetic...

Warning: Spoilers
There is not much to see in this remake, but there's a lot to talk about.

The first version of Vampyres was made in 1974 Directed by Josè Ramòn Larraz. The main characters was played by two beautiful, mysterious and sexy actresses: Marianne Morris (Fran) and Anulka (Miriam). For the fans of this film, as they know, the story is about two women who lives in a big , old manor and they hitchhiking drag they're victims into a blood orgy. In the 1974, the scenarios, the background music and the horror atmosphere was truly Gothic and electrifying like cult classics like Halloween, Salem's Lot and Thexas Chainsaw Massacre.

Let's talk about the new version.

The cheesy song in the intro. My God, ¿Seriously? In the original movie there is bats, and a creepy rock song. Fran and Miriam (Marta Flich and Almudena Leon). They are kinda sexy but there is a lack of acting skills, and the accent is horrible. Not mention the wardrobe, they look like whores. Ann (Veronica Polo) wasn't wear appropriate clothes for camping, check the film.

The editing is a disaster.

There is a bunch of unnecessary actors like the woman in the hotel with photographs of dead people of 1800's; Ann and Peter, disconnecting with the original script.

The dialogues are much, much poor, like one of those low budget horror flicks, and this is a big disgrace.

The end credits we watch blood running and yet another cheesy song.

Shame. I'm sorry for Mister Larraz memory.

I'll stick with the original movie.

Warning: Spoilers
How did they make a vampire movie and have the vampires walk around in broad daylight??? that's like the second thing everybody knows after the drinking blood thing. that's just the most idiotic thing about this terrible "movie", bad acting, amateurish editing, basically non-existent writing, washed out color palette, lack of any logic in the plot, absence of character motivation, etc., etc. but the vampires in the sun, thatz messed up.

Dull as dishwater!
chris_green198120 October 2022
This film had neither the so bad it's good cheese of say John Carpenter's Vampires or the intrigue of a film like Chronos or Byzantine. Instead we have very bad acting, massively unlikeable protagonists, but worst a flat storyline, little tension and just sleezy pornographic scenes that are more uncomfortable than sexy or even shocking. I was bored. I hated the main characters, who were on one hand arty working on a movie or something, one of them suffering a break up. Yet on the other they seemed only interested in sex. If that's your cheesey hook, don't try and make me take them seriously! RUBBISH! The editing was clunky to say the least, and some shots were good the whole film was just boring and confused. The arty movie with no brains, good plot or acting, but not a fun cheese fest either. Avoid.

Just about watchable
Pairic9 September 2022
Vampyres: A remake of the 1974 film. Not great and a bit disjointed. Two Vampire sirens live in an old dilapidated house, they seduce or ambush their victims in the woods. There are plenty of throats slashed with knives (these vampires don't have sharp canines) and victims being hung upside down so that the blood drinkers may bathe in their blood. The plot really could be more coherent but the vampire lore and their hunting methods are entertaining if you are a horror fan, not for the squeamish though. There's also a victim who strikes back with a crossbow. Instead of villagers in the inn giving warnings we have women who run a B&B who caution travelers. Just about worth watching. Directed & written by Víctor Matellano. On Netflix. 5/10.

Just Like A Vampire This Film Had No Soul!
icocleric12 September 2022
This is absolutely awful, I've been more in depth plot in pornos... Like I know the horror genre isn't always the best for plot, but this had absolutely nothing.

All the acting is stiff, and cheesy, and in general there is no charm to this film. Yes, there is a lot of attractive young women who are nude, a lot. But it felt like the people making this film thought that would carry the whole thing. There's bathing in blood and everything but, it's just done in a cheap horror film way.

Like if you are a horror fan, then this film doesn't give you anything interesting, or new. You have certainly seen everything in this film done better else where.

The ending is just like what!? I honestly wish I would have saved time and read reviews on here first.

Insanely stupid
cristiananton-7007012 September 2022
I'm proud for watching this film, but only because it's in my Top 3 worst movies i ever seen. By far.

Except the nudity, there is absolutely nothing worthing to watch in this unbelievable waste of basic resources, like time and money, because this is the level we are talking about.

Every person involved in Vampyres could achieve something useful in his life doing absolutely anything else. A good sleep or just staring at a wall are pure gold and a major achievements by comparison with making this movie.

I just laugh and laugh, i know you won't believe me and you will watch it anyway. So, prepare to rumble your personal top worst movies with this gem of stupidity. Enjoy!

Spoilers follow ...
parry_na13 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Cult classic 'Vampyres (1974)' is re-imagined here by Spanish writer and Director Víctor Matellano. Depending on which reviews you may read, the original was either a very good or a very bad exploitation film – certainly, it acted as a series of set-pieces fusing gory horror with erotica. As such, this is a pretty faithful remake. There is no hugely involving story here, and the plot-line is spread very thinly.

Whereas the original really created a mood, with filming taking place in autumnal England, here, such skeletal trees and crisp cold colours is swapped for sun-drenched Spain and as such, the doom-laden sense of cold isolation is somewhat muted. The sprawling forests and Lakeland is beautifully captured, however – the home owned by the bi-sexual vampire girls is stunning, but contains enough shadowy crypts and huge rooms to convince as a prison. It is here that they bring their unfortunate victims.

Caroline Munro (about whom the DVD extras talk of as some kind of connection with the original film due to her work with Hammer – even though the original was not a Hammer film) is mysterious as a doom-mongering hotel owner. Her part is so sketchy however, that I didn't realise she was a hotel owner until the credits rolled. A red herring in fact, it is nevertheless nice to see her.

The two vampire girls are every bit as stunning and sensual as the originals. Donning black capes in the daytime, they flit across barren roads and woodlands. Almudena León is despatched before the end (or so it seems), leaving her partner, the captivating Marta Flich to carry on the carnal activities alone – until the ending, anyway. Flich in particular is hugely memorable and seems ideally suited to such roles. Indeed, her striking features adorn much of the merchandising. And with good reason; she emerges as pretty much the star of the show.

This is a worthwhile remake, if you consider remakes worthwhile. Matellano has updated the erotic scenes with style, and provided some nice gory moments. If it introduces the film to an audience who would otherwise not be familiar with 'Vampyres', then its existence, as an entertaining modern Euro-horror is more than justified.

Semi-exploitation but inferior remake , colorfully photographed , and dealing with a lesbian couple kidnapping hikers
ma-cortes17 August 2017
Spanish terror movie about two Vampyre women who cause dreadful murders , being originally directed by the Spanish craftsman Victor Matellano . It begins with a sentence by Teophile Gautier : ¨She sprang from the bed with the force of a savage animal directly to my wound , sucking my life's blood with undescribable voluptuosity¨. Blood-soaked erotic movie upon two gorgeous Vampyres coerce unsuspecting campers to their castle , a regal English manor , for a good time . Introducing a devilish new spin to the vintage movie directed by Joseph Larraz starred by Marianne Morris and Anulka . Here is told a similar story , a lesbian vampire couple (Marta Flich , Almudena León) who would waylay and kidnap various passers-by , both male and female , to take them captive at their luxurious rural manor . It is an allegory yarn set at a luxury mansion occupied by two tempting female vampires and a man they have under lock & key in their cellar . They ensnare victims with their sexy bodies , they lurk the rude woods preying on the innocent and the foolishly valiant to tread solitary , then chew their blood the old way . But their existences and lifestyles are suddenly turned upside down when three meddlesome hikers camping at a tent come upon their lair seeking to uncover their dark secrets . The campers inevitably , embrace their amazing fate as soon as to be aware that some legends are real . A decision that has unexpected sexual but ominous consequences .

This is an up-and-coming remake based on a classic movie by director José Ramón Larraz released in 1974 , a film called Vampyres . In fact , the film is dedicated and in Memoriam to Jose Ramon Larraz , master of arty gore and soft-core . Here Victor Matellano brings this ghastly and stylish story plagued with eerie intrigue , nudism , wicked sado-masochistic behaviors , highly blood-curdling scenes and murders executed in a creepy mansion . The gorgeous protagonists , Marta Flich , Almudena León , deliver the goods , they are are a pair of beautiful vampires who get victims to pull over by hitchhiking , then they proceed to bring them back to their house and drink their blood . Support cast is pretty good , including some grateful cameos as Caroline Munro , Fele Martínez , Antonio Mayans , Lone Fleming , Conrado San Martin and May Heatherly's last film .

This horror movie results to be entertaining but slow-moving , focusing two vampires abduct trippers and drivers , to hold them at their large mansion in the countryside in order to kill and feed on them to satisfy their insatiable thirst for chew their blood . Their starving wishes seem to carry out terrible deaths , which are impossible to stop . As they feed them wine , have passionate sex , and then stab them to death while drinking their blood . The alluring female Vampyres shared the pleasures of the flesh , bloody hungry , and the horrors of the grave . They unleash their fantastic skills and become even more violent and sadistic . A group that has not yet found a better place to remain attempts to find out the rare events leading to an old mansion in bloody results which end in death .

This frightening movie deliberately told contains thrills , chills , suspense , sleazy images and lots of violence and gore , including obnoxious killings . It is a straight horror film that features gallons of sleaze upon sleaze and a lot of sexualized violence . The screenplay is credited to director José Ramón Larraz along with Victor Matellano. This is a Spanish exploitation from Hammer Vampyres vein , as Victor Matellano based on the original plot from José Larraz takes here and there from ¨The Vampire Lovers" , ¨Carmilla¨, ¨Countess Dracula¨, and ¨Twins of Evil¨ , among others . Sometimes weak screenplay is added to well-staged murders and some gory special effects . Furthermore , a scary and thrilling musical score creates a real terror . Colorful but extremely dark cinematography in Hammer style with glimmer as well as lurid colors .

This imitation to sexy , twisted 1974 cult classic was professionally made -but with no originality- by Victor Matellano and was a flop at box office , in fact in Spain was only released in 15 theaters . Victor is an expert on terror movies , as he also directed : ¨Stop over in the hell¨ , ¨Wax¨ , and Short movies such as ¨La Cañada De Los Ingleses¨ , ¨¡Zarpazos! Un Viaje Por Spanish Horror¨ or ¨A Journey through Spanish Horror¨ , ¨Stacatto¨ and ¨Tío Jess¨ . His films are plenty of raw eroticism , grisly killings and depraved gore .

Why bother?
Leofwine_draca15 September 2022
Another try at dipping my toe into the murky waters of modern horror and it's 2015's VAMPYRES, a remake of the Jose Ramon Larraz 1974 same-name classic that I happen to rate quite highly. As usual with remakes, I spent most of the time wondering whether it was worth it, and the answer is unsurprisingly no. This is virtually a shot-for-shot retread missing out entirely the horror and eroticism of the original, replacing them with extra characters and boring subplots.

From the outset this is a tough slog, a very cheap looking digital production with that greyed-out look that many of us recognise and hate. It's another Spanish film, badly dubbed in English in the version showing on Netflix, and the no-name cast give resolutely poor performances, particularly the lead actresses who do nothing with their roles. There's some requisite blood and nudity but it's a far cry from that of the original film. The only notable thing are a couple of nothing cameos from Caroline Munro and Lone Fleming (TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD). Avoid!

Sometimes remakes are genuinely better. (But not necessarily by much.)
I_Ailurophile16 January 2023
To be frank, I've been unreasonably excited to watch this for one reason: I absolutely hated José Ramón Larraz's original 1974 film. I found it lacking in meaningful horror, eroticism, or baseline sensuality, otherwise poorly made, and altogether flailing, dull, and boring. Fast-forward 40 years, and surely Victor Matellano couldn't do any worse with a remake, could he? Seeing as how within the first three minutes (most of which are the opening credits) 2015's version of 'Vampyres' demonstrates a more earnest sense of sexual energy and genre thrills, and substantially better direction, cinematography, stunts, and effects? Well surprise, surprise, by doing the bare minimum of film-making and storytelling, Matellano has already bested Larraz in at least some measure. And these aspects remain consistently better throughout these 80 minutes, though not consistent within this picture itself. With that said, it can reasonably be remarked that this is an extremely mixed bag in pretty much every regard. By being a mixed bag instead of abjectly awful this is an improvement; admittedly, however, such a statement doesn't necessarily get one very far.

Beyond illustrating some level of more rudimentary competence than Larraz, whether or not this rendition is any good of its own accord is another question. Matellano shows little to no mind as a filmmaker for tact or nuance, and that bluntness generally trickles down to other facets such as most of the performances, editing, music, costume design, sound design, and more, including too much of the sex scenes, and the fundamental production values. That's not to say that these elements are thusly tawdry across the board, or even if they were, that they couldn't still be worthwhile such as they are. There are actually some fine examples here of shot composition, for example, and themes in the score - and hey, the feature still manages to somehow build a small tinge of atmosphere (another advantage over Larraz), even as the plot doesn't so much advance as it does stumble forward and to the side. But the cumulative effect is troublesome nonetheless. In fairness to the cast and crew alike, I can't tell if they're just poor actors, and inadequate at their own jobs, or if Matellano is just that bad of a writer and director. The dialogue (and its delivery) is mostly so rotten that I'd rather there weren't any dialogue at all; this is actually a very visual movie anyway, so the verbiage is broadly superfluous. Too much of the scene writing is so forceful and unsubtle that I wonder if we wouldn't have been better off had Matellano gone the most brazen route and shot his own picture based specifically on Larraz's screenplay, and possibly just changing or adding small bits and pieces. I don't think Matellano's new story around the same concept is bad, but it's indisputably very light on substance, to the point that when the "climax" rolls around, it feels like a total non sequitur.

The ending, meanwhile - the sequence of short moments we get in succession following the climax - has one good idea among them, culminating in the final shot. The rest are so haphazard and weakly written that I'm not even sure what we're supposed to make of most of it. Within those last minutes, at least part of it all could have been left on the cutting room floor without losing anything. That goes for a lot of the horror violence, for that matter, which is little more than slightly toned-down "torture porn" a la Eli Roth. It looks great, and is duly gnarly, but I think it would've had more impact if it were approached more carefully and sparingly. 2015's sex scenes are a significant improvement on 1974's, which I thought to be among the worst I've ever seen, but are still often too heavy-handed; moreover, the nudity here is tiresomely gratuitous. It's noteworthy that Matellano filmed his Spanish production in English: for as much as his cast tend to struggle with the language, or at least to naturally and convincingly deliver their lines in it, I'm flummoxed as to why he didn't simply shoot in Spanish in the first place and employ subtitles. And so on, and so on. It would be too easy to continue to go into considerable detail about all the peculiarities in 'Vampyres,' and pick it apart, but all the criticism boils down to the same thing. For whatever the filmmaker, his cast, and his crew did well here, the project was in dire need of far more mindful, more attentive, and tighter writing, acting, and craftsmanship. Every component part would have benefited were the production at large more tempered, restrained, and thoughtful in every regard, and the intended effect of the horror or eroticism would have been heightened in turn. Instead, in too many ways this feels like the most bare-bones, unpolished realization possible of the concept. (Which, once more, really says a lot about Larraz, that his movie was absolutely worse.)

I'd love to say that I like this more than I do. For every instance that the title lands on something good, however, it's followed in short order by something that again lowers my esteem, or vice versa. I entered with low expectations, though I admit some part of me was hoping that Matellano would show up Larraz to some degree just because I loathed the antecedent picture so much; could that yearning mean that my perception of this remake was unconsciously altered in its favor from the start? Even if that were the case - in the greatest spirit of generosity one could just overreach and perhaps say that this is "average," but if I'm being honest, it's still a hair below. There is value here, but it's set against a burdensome stack of detractions that prevent it from standing any taller. It's a shame, really; I recognize the potential of what this might have been, but in one fashion or another, it just can't achieve it. 'Vampyres' is mildly enjoyable if you come across it, and don't particularly mind when a film is overall Lesser. Unless you're desperate for more genre flicks, however, or an utmost fan of someone involved, I hesitate to even use the word "recommend" in connection with this.

It's nice to see a rare instance of a remake that genuinely improves on its predecessor. How much that really means, here, is up for debate.

Budget isn't it's problem...acting, writing and filmmaking is
garyevo-730-11972528 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I gave this film a HUGE benefit of the doubt from the offset due to its budget which is clear even during the 30s preview on Netflix. Cudos to the filmmakers in that sense. Having said that, this is not its problem.

If you have a low budget you have to have a strong script before anything, and then people who can perform. Cause when an actress can't even scream like she's scared...you know you have a problem. Very disjointed with characters that don't even have a reason to be there or any motivations to do the things they're doing.

The two vampires actresses were decent to be fair. Although pretty much nude every time you see them. What got me though, laughably was one minuet it's day then night then day again lol, basics man at least get the day time right...However, what really took the biscuit was from the offset the vampires are out during the day...ok no problem......then randomly around 45 mins in they panic cause the suns coming out....what!?

Shot quite nicely though. Had moments, but lacked story, characters that were believable and convincing performances from the campers.

Awesome remake as worthy as original
shagee79774 May 2018
I remember the original Vampyres faintly Because I Was only 8 when it came out. When is found out there was a remake I got excited. Because of the subject matter I would be able to enjoy now as an adult. Hot Vampire lesbians, bring it on, This remake of the 1974 cult classic Vampryes, again has two vampires in the English countryside. There in a tucked away house in the woods. They lure unsuspecting men and feed off of them. When a photographer and her helpers arrive and camp out near by. The Vamps set there eyes and passion on them. The movie is very creepy and brilliantly shot. The dreary woods make a perfect backdrop to the craziness going on in an around. There is gore galore and nude bodies. The 2 leads are gorgeous and fun to listen to. I recommend a look. So many times remakes are poorly done And not faithful to the original. This has the feel of the original and if you didn't know it was shot in 2015 you would think it was the 70's. Still beautiful Caroline Munro Stars in it. Vampyres, 2015. Directed by Victor Matellano. Starring Caroline Munro, Veronica Polo , Marta Flich , Almudena Leon , Anthony Rotsa, Lone Fleming and Elvira Moliterno

Bisexual vampire girls prey on the unwary
Tweekums22 September 2022
This film is set in a remote wooded area where a pair of beautiful young vampires, Fran and Miriam, prey on those who come their way. The latest potential victims are a trio of campers who take an interest in the somewhat creepy old house the vampires live in. Inevitably plenty of blood will be spilt; and plenty of flesh will be exposed.

When I sat down to watch this I knew nothing beyond the fact that it featured vampires and was quite short, under an hour and twenty minutes. I didn't know that it was a remake of a 1970s film, not that that would have made much of a difference as I don't think I've ever seen the original. It keeps the '70s aesthetic; if it wasn't for characters complaining that their mobile phones didn't work and a reference to 'The Blair Witch Project' I might have thought it was older. The story is fairly basic; really just an excuse to deliver victims to the house where they will be tormented and die. These scenes are fairly well done and manage to be surprisingly scary at times. There is a fair amount of sex and nudity; certainly considerably more than in most modern horror films. The acting is okay but nothing special. It is meant to be set in England but one wouldn't guess from watching except when one potential victim comments that the vampire girl doesn't sound English. Overall I wouldn't say this is close to being a must see but fans of exploitation horror may enjoy it.
