that was an angel?
RavenGlamDVDCollector12 November 2016
I at first thought she was trying to say something about the cruelty of man hunting down poor ultimately defenseless animals, that she was portraying a wounded eagle, well, sort of. Poor thing, lying there, pierced by an arrow, poor old wings, broken from fall, poor doomed bird, struggling to survive. Evoking much sympathy, and, yes, life is like that, with cruel buffoons mowing down creatures for which they have absolutely no regard. For shame. But turns out she is an angel, being revived in a swimming pool of the ancient mythological Greek gods. Aw come on. Anyway, this stuff gets too complicated. Yes, there's something new to see every time you look, but a resurrected Michael Jackson, John Lennon, Mahatma Gandhi and Jesus? Aw gee. Is this supposed to be fun? This theme filled with utter drivel? Is this what it takes to captivate attention nowadays? No, I don't want to see such weird poo, thank you. The best thing about the video is that we get to see Lady Gaga as she is, ugly tattoos the only downer. The song is complicated, this cannot possibly be a real hit, few people are going to understand the lyrics, I caught the general drift, but it took some checking up to understand what it was really about. Most people, like the Other Reviewer here, would misunderstand and believe that Gaga is singing about wanting to be a guy. But G.U.Y. is an acronym for Girl Under You, and G.I.R.L. becomes Guy I'm Romancing, Love... Okay, she was stretching it there, it doesn't even fit. But it's all a gender reversal thing, favorite territory for Her Ladyship. No telling what we'd see if Lady Gaga was allowed to do, free of self-censorship's restraining social order, exactly what she wants, but now, everything comes through in this weird-ass way.

It's not that I don't like it, but that it's a bizarre bohemian convoluted mess of images, odd lyrics, and ultimately, simply leads down dark trails away from real fun. Carly Rae Jepsen anyone?

Gaga way past her prime it seems

Warning: Spoilers
These twelve minutes are also titles "G.U.Y - An ARTPOP Film". I assume this is a reference to the music equivalent of art-house? Pretty much none of it justifies said comparison. It starts actually not in the worst manner. Gaga's angel costume looks nicely and it is finally a religious reference from her not included for the sake of it to appear as controversial and provocative as possible like pretty much the whole "Judas" video.

Other than that, there is not really many positive things to say here, the only one I can think of is that she looks fairly natural for the majority of the film, compared to her other videos. No huge hats, glasses or extravagant haircuts. However, there are many other problems here. The song is completely forgettable. The lyrics don't make any sense. She sings about wanting to be a guy while she kills them and makes out with them? No substance here. The Housewives are as random and embarrassing as the reference of Michael Jackson coming out of his grave. The whole thing is just too self-promoting again and it clearly costs the video any artistic value it might have had. Aside from that, a whole third here (roughly four minutes) are the ending credits. No if only the song we hear during them was remotely good. Pretty bad overall result.
