YES! So. Much. FUN!
johnduffy074 August 2021
Nick & Nicky! Oh my gosh, I can't WAIT for everyone to see this movie. This film is an old-timey murder mystery wrapped in a riddle. And by "riddle" I mean, high-end camp couture gay cult comedy classic! It's literally so much fun. I already want to watch this movie a million times.

At its core it's a murdery who-done-it keep-you-on-your-high-heels type investigation. The main character, Nick (Patrick Askin) is roped into solving the murder of his ex lover's lover and his soon-to-be (adorable) husband, Nicky (Ian Whitt) is not super keen on the idea at first.

But also, like, what murder? A lavish christmas party that only a wealthy gay New York City couple could pull off sets the stage for the over-the-top characters, clever writing, and old-fashioned romance that fills each well-thought-out scene throughout the movie. The first two-thirds of the movie is filled with camp, fashion, Sound of Music references, well-structured jawlines and well-written comedy that the actual murder almost feels secondary in the beginning (Though every once in a while, Boom! You're hit a blood-splattering plot twist).

And the characters: Trevor (Glen North), for example, whose lover was murdered, plays so perfectly over-the-top that it's hilarious. Is it gay camp over-the-top? Or is it exactly the way a 1930's movie damsel in despair would act? It's both and it's freakin brilliant. But the romance between Nick and Nicky is also so reminiscent of those old movies. It's unbreakable and sweet, but layered with the difficult gay-marriage climate of today (though not as difficult now, but still). And there are so many more; the newsie, the twins, the parents! (Oh my god, the parents, you guys), the old lady, the priest. There are many.

The last third of the movie jolts you into chandelier draped dinner party where the mystery of the murder starts to unravel. Thankfully, any murdery plot points you may have missed because you were (I was) chuckling about the funny way Nick holds a glass or the fallacious decor of a clueless old lady (I NEED to see this again), he sums it up while keeping you guessing.

It's an indie movie, and it's out and proud of it. Not unlike the cleverly well-written character-driven Emmy Award-winning show Schitt's Creek, Nick & Nicky was left alone to be what it is and we're so blessed because of it.

It's so much fun, and I can't wait for everyone to see this.

Nicky & Nicky is a must see! It's a glamorous film filled with witty characters & many twists & turns. Reminiscent of a Woody Allen style, it's tongue & cheek humor will keep you grinning till the end! With the backdrop of some iconic New York settings, as well as high brow Hamptons houses, it's a feel good mystery right till the end!

That's Entertainment!

Who says they don't make them like they used to!! They've literally brought back the classics with this twist on the mad-ball comedy/mystery film. Nick and Nicky has a delightful cast, witty dialogue and clever whodunit plot. Glorious "technicolor" costumes and sets and Manhattan in all it's glory! What else can you want......Cary Grant and Randolph Scott?

Murder, Intrigue, Glamor, Comedy

A style reminiscent of Hollywood 30's and 40's. And what wedding doesn't come with a little drama. But this one ends up entwined in a murder mystery in the middle of it all. Will the wedding actually happen? Will the murder be solved? Sit back and enjoy the comedy and suspense as this wealthy gay couple navigate it all.

Swanky Fun!

An intoxicating Cosmo of a movie, with just the right mix of humor, glamour and suspense. Plus a twist of romance. "Nick & Nicky" is a frothy homage to the "Thin Man" comedy-mysteries of yore, and gay as all get-out. The actors, the settings, the costumes: all gorgeous.

The classic 1934 murder mystery comedy makes a witty, stylish leap into the twenty-first century.
dougm-8239920 December 2021
If you're going to update "The Thin Man", you have got to do something different. Director Marcus Slabine & screenwriter Patrick Askin have certainly done that. "Nick and Nicky" is a fun, boozy whodunit with memorable characters and lively dialog. Mr. Askin is charming as Nick, the never-without-a-cocktail private eye who must solve a series of murders before his wedding to Nicky (an appealing Ian Whitt). The supporting cast shines in this film, particularly Sean Young as Nicky's acerbic mom, Tyler Hollinger as a manic tabloid reporter and especially Deborah Twiss as the police detective who reluctantly teams up with Nick.

As with all good mysteries, the culprit is revealed at an elegant dinner party. This is the highlight of the film, as Nick must weed his way through a considerable contingent of colorful suspects to get to the guilty party.

So grab a drink, enjoy and please pay special attention to the distinctive décor found in one suspect's salon. I believe this might be a first for cinema.

New twist on an old classic

Reminiscent of the 30s and 40s whodunit spoofs, this film updates the story with a gay twist following Nick and Nicky as they solve a murder. Fun, colorful, and thoroughly enjoyable.

Enjoyable, tongue-in-cheek update of classic film series.
Cinemaskype4 November 2021
While it helps to have an appreciation of the noir "Thin Man" film series this witty, comedic murder mystery stands on its own. Hollywood take note - actor/writer/producer Patrick Askin delivers a project which transcends its slim budget, a visual and auditory feast. And he's generous with the funny, allowing his stylishly costumed cast to shine. It's a hoot watching them have fun with their roles; they make the most of their parts, both familiar and unfamiliar. Spoiler alert - I suspect the "mean hag" is a cinematic first! Another first for many despite our collective familiarity with that most filmed of cities, Manhattan, are the numerous sumptuously shot venues. If you're looking to escape the everyday just settle into your leather wingback chair in your ascot and smoking jacket with a shaken martini (or jammies and a Cosmo!) and enjoy this jewel-toned gem of a film.

Nick & Nicky - a must-see gem of a film!
bracyrneal4 May 2021
Nick & Nicky is a fun, old school murder mystery film that is a triumphant and full of wit and charm. Shot mostly in New York City, the film catches the glamorous old day nuances of the world's most famous City - murder, nightlife, cocktails, smokey piano bars and even a good ole' smoking jacket. "Nick" played by actor, Patrick Askin, is that guy you've met many times late at night at THAT bar. Full of "joie de vivre," the lover of a cold and strong Cosmopolitan cocktail, curious but always observing, a man full of barroom tales and a personality that gushes great stories of living in New York while commanding everyone's attention sitting at the local piano bar. Nick is also in love with his lover, "Nicky." "Nicky," performed by actor, Ian Whitt, who's boyish charm compliments Nick's flamboyant personality is a scene grabber and his admiration of Nick is envious. Although Nicky is the younger love, he sweetly keeps an eye on Nick, at times being the voice of reason in a murder mystery that unfolds. Nick and Nicky become embroiled in a murder mystery while planning their wedding - all at the same time. So New York! Their love is apparent even throughout their investigation of murder, mystery and intrigue.

Keep on eye out in the film for fun cameo appearances from local New York City great gay icons like actress, Sean Young, newspaper reporter, Michael Musto and actor and nightlife impresario, David Drumgold. See how many New York City icons and actors you can recognize?!

Watch this film. It's fresh while feeling like an Old Hollywood film. It will put a smile on your face!

NICK AND NICKY-Love & Laughs In The 21st Century!
hpmccoy-19 May 2021
"NICK AND NICKY" (yes, the dog is Nora) I had the privilege of watching a new comedy/mystery feature written by and starring the highly talented, Patrick Askin! An old time 'who done it' with a modern tint. Clever conversation, story, and wit...visually beautiful. Donna McKenna cast Ian Whitt, Sean Young, Malachy McCourt, Consuelo Costin (Vanderbilt), Deborah Twiss, Tyler Hollinger, Glen North, Drew Henriksen, to name a few. Directed by Marcus Slabine. I had been invited to interview for the TV show, Stage Screen and In Between with Helen, while they were on location filming at the Vanderbilt Museum in Long Island, N. Y. Thank you, Patrick, for that honor. I am so impressed with how this movie turned out! Be on the lookout for NICK AND NICKY on an impressive platform!

Cute, playful and wonderfully campy
seankosofsky19 December 2022
Every now and then you just need a cute gay romcom to give you a smile. The cast does a great job with this movie and it brings together all sorts of wonderful elements that contribute to good entertainment. The point of the movie is to be playful and fun so just sit back and enjoy. Seeing Sean Young in another film brought me back to my teen years. Watch with friends... And wine!

A great time of year to watch this film is also around the holidays. There is sort of a romantic escapism about the era and the costumes and it certainly is a nod to some of the classic films and classic scenes we all grew up with.
