Teri Garr, who died on Oct. 29 at 79, was known for her roles in movies such as Tootsie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Young Frankenstein. But before she became a leading lady, she spent years as a bit player, landing small parts in various TV shows and movies throughout the 1960s. That included a string of appearances as a dancer in Elvis Presley movies, which she later admitted were not exactly Oscar material.

But when a devastating sandstorm engulfs the race, he finds himself lost in the Sahara Desert, locked in a 10-day battle not for victory, but for survival.
The film is currently in pre-production and will be unveiled to international distributors at the AFM which kicks on Nov. 5 in Las Vegas. Upgrade will handle international sales, with CAA Media Finance repping North American rights.

Teri Garr, the Oscar-nominated actress who capitalized on her adorable flightiness in such films as Tootsie and Young Frankenstein before her career was derailed by multiple sclerosis, died Tuesday. She was 79.
Garr, who started out as a background dancer working alongside Elvis Presley in several 1960s party films, died at her home in Los Angeles “surrounded by family and friends,” publicist Heidi Schaeffer told The Hollywood Reporter.
Garr revealed that she had Ms, the chronic, degenerative disease of the nervous system, on Larry King’s CNN show in October 2002, and she survived emergency surgery to treat a brain aneurysm four years later. Her final onscreen appearance came in 2011.
Garr’s career breakthrough came as Gene Wilder’s comely Transylvanian lab assistant in Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein (1974). She received her supporting actress Oscar nomination for playing Dustin Hoffman’s insecure actress friend in Sydney Pollack’s Tootsie (1982).
Those films ranked Nos.

As the massive promotional push for “Wicked” continues apace, a new featurette has provided audiences with the best look and listen yet at the Broadway adaptation’s musical numbers.
Going to great lengths to highlight how stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande sang live on set, the newly released video teases iconic “Wicked” sequences like “Popular” and “Defying Gravity.”
“When we came into this movie, we weren’t sure how much we were going to do live or not,” said director Jon M. Chu in the teaser. “But they are the best singers in the world, so every scene they have been singing live.”
“We chose to sing live because it meant that we would be further connected to the words we were saying and to each other,” added Erivo.
“It was an immediate no-brainer for Cynthia and I. We both were like, ‘Well, of course, we’re singing live,...

Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate announced that the “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer” director is in final discussions to film a new version of Bret Eason Ellis’ dark horror novel “American Psycho,” nearly 25 years after the same company released Mary Harron’s satirical adaptation. In a key role that elevated his career, the 2000 film starred Christian Bale as yuppie investment banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman.
It’s the kind of announcement destined to raise eyebrows. Guadagnino is in a career sweet spot after “Challengers” and “Queer” this year (and “After the Hunt” in post); he already has many projects in the works, including “Separate Rooms” with Josh O’Connor and a Thomas Mann adaptation in early development. So why is he choosing a remake — and for a film that doesn’t seem that long ago?
New versions of older films are not unusual. Even the word “remake” is tricky here — does that apply with adaptations?...

Rachel Zegler and Jack Antonoff have shared a new collaboration, “Man of the House,” from the new Broadway production Romeo + Juliet.
The latest revival of the classic Shakespeare tragedy stars Zegler as Juliet and Kit Connor as Romeo. And while it’s not an out-and-out musical, it does feature a few new songs from Antonoff. “Man of the House” is the first offering from the show and was co-written with singer-songwriter Ryan Beatty.

Crime musical wins Oscar for Best Picture! That was “Chicago” 22 years ago, and it could be “Emilia Perez” this year. There are plenty of differences between the two films — they’re in different languages, for instance — but both explore unlikely subjects through song. In “Chicago,” you got a pair of murderesses trying to beat the rap and escape the hangman’s noose. And in “Emilia Perez,” you’ve got a Mexican cartel leader undergoing a gender transition to become her true self. “Chicago” was the big winner on Oscar night. Now “Emilia Perez” ranks among our top two contenders for the prize.
See‘Emilia Perez’ will officially campaign for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars
As of this writing “Perez” gets second-place odds of 17/2 in the race for Best Picture, according to the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. But it’s not too far behind front-runner “Anora.

To judge from the electric response of the youthful audience at the Sam Gold-helmed production of Romeo + Juliet, the casting of Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor as William Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers will be enough to persuade their fans that this story is dope Af. It’s not hard to imagine teens, having just watched Connor’s Romeo dangle in the air from Juliet’s suspended bed before doing a pull-up to hoist himself up to kiss her, begging their drama teachers to stage a Shakespeare tragedy this spring instead of, say, Clue.
In Gold’s previous Shakespeare outings on Broadway—2019’s Glenda Jackson-headlined King Lear and 2022’s Macbeth, starring Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga—you really had to know the plays well to have any idea of what was going on. While critics cited the incoherence of their abstractions, I found much to relish in the...

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, which I guess must include the one embroidered on the black mesh singlet worn by Kit Connor. Sam Gold’s Gen Z Romeo + Juliet revival can be chaotic and undisciplined, but it’s also breathless and swoony, angry and violent, tender and sexy Af. Ready to attest to that was the mob of young women and queer kids in my audience who let out a squeal of excitement when Connor took a flying leap into a pull-up to kiss co-star Rachel Zegler on a bed suspended above the stage. This is not your grandmother’s balcony scene, but it’s disarming.

As Paul Tazewell was conceiving design ideas for “Wicked,” mushroom gills served as an unlikely inspiration for Elphaba’s black dress.
The costume designer had stumbled across a documentary about mushrooms. Tazewell says, “I became aware of the beauty of different kinds of mushrooms because of the texture and different colors.”
Tazewell was tasked with designing the costumes for “Wicked,” starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. The idea to align Elphaba with nature stemmed from the character’s history.
Says Tazewell, “She is this little oppressed girl being called out because of the color of her skin and ostracized even within her family.” He added that because of her connection and allyship to the animal community he turned to nature to define what her look would be, and that’s where mushrooms became the inspiration.
Speaking with Variety, Tazewell says the idea was to “create a...

Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan continues to write new chapters in his feel-good comeback story, and this latest one is as an action star in Jonathan Eusebio’s Love Hurts.
After a nearly two-decade hiatus from acting, Quan won an Oscar for his supporting role as Waymond Wang in Daniels’ best picture-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once. It was a storybook second chance for an actor who grew disillusioned with acting, opting to quit and enroll in USC’s film program. It wasn’t until watching 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians that he felt the urge to test the waters for any new opportunities.
In Love Hurts, Quan’s character, Marvin Gable, is one of Milwaukee’s best real estate agents, and he, too, has also been enjoying his own second bite of the apple until his much darker past as a hitman comes back to haunt him. In the lead-up...

From the mid-1950s through the early 1970s, many lavish Broadway musicals were successfully adapted to film, from “The King and I” to “West Side Story” to “Cabaret.” One of the most successful and enduring of all time premiered on October 21, 1964, when “My Fair Lady” hit the theaters after much anticipation, drawing people to the box office in droves despite its lengthy near-three-hour run time. Read on for more about the “My Fair Lady” 60th anniversary.
The origin of “My Fair Lady” dates back farther than the 1956 Tony-winning play. Music collaborators Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe were inspired by George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 play “Pygmalion,” the tale of Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle who takes speech lessons from Professor Henry Higgins in order to pass as a “proper lady.” The two men thought it would be “loverly” to turn the story into a musical, and wrote the book for “My Fair Lady,...

Now that we know "Call Me By Your Name" and "Challengers" director Luca Guadagnino is making his own version of "American Psycho" — one that's based on Bret Easton Ellis' novel, not the 2000 movie helmed by writer-director Mary Harron — the world is waiting to see who Guadagnino and his team choose to play this generation's Patrick Bateman. I'm eminently unqualified to make this decision — for one thing, I'm not a casting director, and also, nobody asked me — but I definitely have ideas.
Here's one: Guadagnino could gender-flip the role and cast Zendaya, his "Challengers" lead who proved, throughout the tennis drama, that she can definitely play an apex predator. If she's not available, Margaret Qualley could probably make a meal out of the role. If we're sticking with guys, there are some great options who have simply aged out of the role; Robert Pattinson and Penn Badgley could both bring something quite excellent to Patrick,...

Earlier this year, we wrote about how Lionsgate wanted to mount a new version of "American Psycho," and now the studio has found its director: Luca Guadagnino, the director behind "Call Me By Your Name," "Challengers," and the 2018 remake of "Suspiria," who seems to be a perfect choice for this new take.
I say "new take" because there's an important distinction to be made here. Per the report in Deadline, Guadagnino is not remaking the 2000 movie written and directed by Mary Harron, which stars Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street finance bro who also happens to be a vicious serial killer. Instead, Guadagnino is re-adapting the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis, which is a lot sicker and more twisted than the film.
There's very little information about this project other than the fact that it's in the works, but Guadagnino, who's currently promoting his latest film "Queer" — which...

Rita Moreno may be turning 93 in December, but the legendary Egot winner is still thinking about returning to the stage.
“I don’t miss it all the time, but sometimes I do,” Moreno says over Zoom from her northern California home. “I play Alexa all the time because I love music, and I love jazz. Once in a while I start singing along with them and performing the song, and I’ll say to myself, ‘I think you miss this.’ There’s always a chance that I may do it again. I mean, singing, you can do. You can’t do dancing. My knees would just scream and yell for help.”
She continues, “I’ll be cleaning a piece of furniture, and I’ll put the rag down and just stand there and perform. I love performing. I’m such a ham bone.”

Nine months of horror releases down, three to go! We’re officially in the “spooky season” portion of the year, the build-up to our favorite holiday, Halloween, and with our 2024 Fall Horror Movie Preview, we’re looking ahead at some of the horror movies we can’t wait to check out in the remaining months of this year. Below, you’ll find a list of the movies we’re anxious to see this Halloween season and beyond… so, here we go:

Heath Ledger’s turn as The Joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight remains one of the most chilling performances of this century, the actor eventually winning a posthumous Oscar for the defining portrayal of The Clown Prince of Crime. Based on peeks and teases, we knew we would be in for something special when the film came out. And so did Ledger himself, fully aware just how powerful the performance and The Dark Knight would be.
Recounting working with Heath Ledger on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Andrew Garfield (Anton) remembered the star telling him about his go as The Joker. “He had just done the Joker, he had just finished doing The Dark Knight, and he was so smug about it. I was like, ‘How did that go?’ and he was like, ‘Yeah, it’s really good.’”
However, Heath Ledger wouldn’t find everything to be funny surrounding the promotion of The Dark Knight,...

Rising star Rachel Zegler has her pick of work, from starring in Disney’s live action adaptation of “Snow White” to making her Broadway debut in “Romeo + Juliet,” but she’s ready to work with some non-human talent for a change. As part of Variety’s New York Issue, Zegler spoke with the publication about her career and the roles she hopes to take on, including being the main player in a Muppet movie.
“Michael Caine did it for ‘Christmas Carol,’” she said. “Tim Curry did it for ‘Muppet Treasure Island.’ I want to be the one!”
Other talent have taken up this mantle in recent history as well, with Ashanti playing Dorothy in 2005’s “The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz” and Jason Segel and Amy Adams starring in 2011’s “The Muppets.” Its most recent entry was a Halloween special in 2021 called “Muppets Haunted Mansion,” a tie-in with the famous Disney ride.

Gold Derby’s Oscar predictions in the below-the-line races opened last week, and “Wicked” leads the early odds to win Best Costume Design. That should come as no surprise to anyone who’s seen the popular Broadway musical, which won various costume awards races two decades ago (including at the 2004 Tonys) for its eye-popping looks for good witches, bad witches, deceitful wizards and everyone in between.
The Universal Pictures film adaptation, which will begin defying gravity in theaters on November 22, 2024, stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp, aka the Wicked Witch of the West, Ariana Grande as Galinda Upland, aka Glinda the Good Witch, Michelle Yeoh as headmistress Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as the iconic Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and Jonathan Bailey as young prince Fiyero Tigelaar. Jon M. Chu directs the movie from a script co-written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox.

While the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is often awarded to an ingenue, like the 2022 winner Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), it can also be a way to reward a more seasoned performer. In 2024, Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Leftovers”) won on her first nomination A year earlier Jamie Lee Curtis had reaped her first Oscar bid at age 64 and prevailed for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In 2021 Youn Yuh-jung, who is renowned in her native South Korea, won at age 73 for her first English film, “Minari.” And in 2020, the academy honored past nominee Laura Dern who finally took home an Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in “Marriage Story.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actress.)
While Dern was clearly a featured player in her picture, two of her rival nominees, Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie, could easily have submitted themselves in lead for their roles in “Little Women” and “Bombshell” respectively.

Ever since her debut in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s “West Side Story,” New Jersey-native Rachel Zegler has quickly become one of Hollywood’s go-to young starlets. Despite this rapid ascension and her appreciation for the success she’s found in the entertainment business, in a recent interview with Variety, she admitted that the city where much of the actual business is conducted isn’t exactly her favorite place to be.
“The reason I fell in love with this industry is not because of this town,” Zegler said of Hollywood. “In fact, I kind of can’t stand this town. I don’t like that there’s a town built around the industry that I work in; it’s stifling and isolating and weird. In New York, nobody gives a fuck.”

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
In October 2024, we’re doing the Midnight Movie Monster Mash with films that challenge our understanding of evil characters and creatures just in time for Halloween.
First, read the spoiler-free Bait: a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film. Then, come back for the Bite: a breakdown of all the spoiler-y bits you’d want to unpack when exiting a theater.
The Bait: Kaiju Cain and Abel Take Tokyo
As a horror and sci-fi subgenre, Kaiju was built on the promise of towering monsters threatening to squish entire cities on a whim. From North Korea’s bonkers “Pulgasari” (1995) to the global phenomenon that is Godzilla and the MonsterVerse, you’d be hard-pressed to find a mega-monster flick that doesn’t classify as midnight in some way.

A surprisingly clever riff on a familiar recipe, Prime Video’s “House of Spoils” seems like a dark fairy tale you could make better yourself — at first. Part “The Bear” and part “The Witch,” this supernatural horror outing follows a nameless Chef (Ariana DeBose) in an allegory about ambitious women that lacks bite but isn’t without its own special sauce.
Writer/directors Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy broke out with their tenacious crime thriller “Blow the Man Down” in 2019 and show a well-earned confidence in this imperfect but still occasionally enchanting first-time genre effort. The duo’s second feature builds on a bare-bones concept that feels more rudimentary than rustic much of the time, and yet, the filmmakers’ decisive presentation is enjoyable enough as an entrée served straight to streaming.

A film headlining a chef and overtones of witchery are combined in Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy’s “House of Spoils.” The garden both inspires and holds secrets to yesteryear’s terror. What does all the foliage hold in themselves? The directors attempt a dark mystery, but the film squanders it freely, cobbling together a lazy plot that spruces up an explanatory flashback to bolster a story of female agency and determination.
The narrative fizzles out quickly, saved only up to a degree by its lead, Ariana DeBose, who admittedly works a tad too zealously. It’s the case of an actor so stubbornly convinced she can single-handedly rescue a terribly clueless script that her presence, despite being the sole sincere spot, starts to stand out in some other distracting register.

Rachel Zegler is admitting that she has been “really scared” about AI putting her out of work.

“I was really scared of being replaced by an artificial intelligence version of myself that they scanned when I was 18 and then never being able to work on a set again,” Zegler said. “What was stopping them from using that for the rest of my life?”

“Spoiler alert: I die,” Rachel Zegler says.
You’ll have to forgive the 23-year-old actress for giving away the ending to her next project. But to be fair, it’s been 400 years since a certain Englishman wrote the play in which she’s making her Broadway debut.
On Oct. 24, following a month of previews, Zegler will take the stage as Juliet in director Sam Gold’s revival of Shakespeare’s best-known romance. Things are going to get intense for her and her Romeo, played by “Heartstopper” star Kit Connor — after all, the tagline for the production reads, “The youth are f**ked.”
In other words, you won’t see them donning tunics or Elizabethan ruffs. Gold’s vision leans heavily into the culture of its Gen Z cast: Zegler says he originally pitched the project to her as “‘Romeo and Juliet’ if it was set in Troye Sivan’s ‘Rush’ music video.
