a common man rising to the occasion
jprabhahar9822 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
After Poraali, Samuthirakani is back with his new flick Nimirnthu nil.Though the theme of the film is strong, the film was not up to the mark.

The film deals with a common man who is beaten up by the corruption in the society, rises to put an end to it.

First 30 minutes of the film looks pretty common. But the plot drifts to the rising of the Aravindan Sivasamy(JayamRavi) against this corruption and the film moves where the the government officials join to stop him.Although the climax can be obviously guessed.

As a director,Samuthirakani has done his part well.Dialogues looks a bit strong in the film. But the characterization can be improved where certain characters were not introduced clearly as it for Sarath Kumar's character. The cinematography looks good. But,the editing was not that good that too when in the dual roles fight the editing was under the mark,it makes me think its unreal. The screenplay looks illogical at times.Music by G.v.Prakash was OK.As for as acting is concerned JayamRavi has done his part pretty good in both the characters.Gopinath looks strong in his acting at certain scenes.Soori has fitted the role pretty well.As a actress,AmalaPaul has done it again.I think actors can do even better to make it natural as possible.

Although Samuthirakani has taken a strong theme to deliver it to the audience the film still needs some nourishment in its plot and other areas. And the whole, the film looks as a commercial entertainer.I would give it 5/10 considering it as a one time watchable flick.

a common story of a common man
raman251199824 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Nimirndhu Nil - a story of a common man rising against corruption. The story is good but the screenplay needs some work. Samuthirakani's toil can be seen in the film but it fails to impress the audience.

The first half looks pretty good. According to me, the first half could be taken as a featured film.Jayam Ravi has performed well in both the roles and has given what the film needs. Soori and Amala Paul have done though their characters are unnecessary.Music could have been better. The second half is a bit boring and the editing is not up to the mark in double action scenes.Gopinath has done exceptionally well. The film could have been made better by shortening the story, deleting unwanted songs etc. The first half deserves an applause unlike the second half.Though the film has many negatives, it fulfills its aim - creating awareness. The film serves as a full-fledged commercial entertainer making some changes in the peoples' minds. This one time flick deserves a rating of 5/10.

Same anti corruption tale again.....
SivakumarBalachandran22 March 2014
Nimirndhu Nil(2014) Review: Anti corruption tales are not new to Tamil cinema where we had major actors' ace directors' and huge production value invested enough in this genre "Nimirndhu Nil" fits this category as well.

Plot majorly focuses on anti corruption, bribe on Government sectors and how an ordinary individual takes things on his hands to make a corruption free environment. Hmm yes I know what you are thinking this one line we have heard and seen in so many yester year releases?! Yes its right I also felt the same. So much of cliché from movies like Anniyan, Indian, Citizen, Samurai, Mudhalvan, Satyagraha (Hindi recent flick). Particularly Anti corruption wing and the name Aravind even a small child will say it resembles AAI. Can't help my mind instinct thinking of Anniyan Rules Ramanujam role during the intro portrayal of Ravi.

Screenplay was speedy enough to keep you engaged in the first half and the second half of the movie became corrupted with unnecessary character inclusions, song sequences and item numbers.

Casting side we find huge ensemble of support cast from Tamil industry. Off course Ravi did a decent performance on his role. Vijay TV Gopi was natural in his role which fits his real profession as well. Suri and Amala had good screen space on the start then lost track. Sarath kumar's role did not definitely stay on your heart.

On the whole I have to say a racy first-half and a crap second- half.

Movie for a Social Cause
Saikiran_P21 March 2014
Nimirndhu Nil is yet another good one from Samuthirakani. The movies against corruption have always been welcomed by audience and this one gets included as well. Usually the messages will be conveyed at the last in these kind of movies but this time it comes around in the beginning. The director has given his maximum attention for the social causes from the start to the end and makes it an interesting narration overall. Jayam Ravi was at his best again, Soori & Gopinath made commendable performances as well. Sarath Kumar & Amala Paul did fill their roles too. The love track is minimum and gets along well with the movie, but the biggest drawback is the songs. Though the director can't be blamed, it does break the speed of movie. Camera, BGM, Editing, etc were adequate. This one is worth a watch if you care about the society based movies..

Outdated 'hero takes on corruption in the world' affair
loveyourlife18 March 2014
After reading a number of positive reviews of this, plus it's dominance on top of the Chennai box office on release, I had high expectations of it; maybe too high. The first 30 minutes are both weak and unfunny but then the film thankfully improves. The best part of the film is actually its last 30 minutes when the story ups its ante. The middle bit you could really do without. Yes, the message embodied in the film is important and brave and yes Jeyam Ravi is a reliable star but that's not enough to make this even half the radical film some reviews are making it out to be. It's a typical action semi-thriller with a message, nothing more. The dual role in Tamil cinema is also becoming tiresome these days and strangely I preferred Jeyam as the alter-ego, Narasimha Reddy. Many people will enjoy this film and all the actors do a fairly decent job but there is, in my opinion, nothing beyond that. When Tamil cinema is starting to turn out really different scripts like 'Soodhu Kavvum', 'Moodar Koodam' and even 'Kumki', it makes outdated over-the-top commercial fare like this pale in comparison. The music is fairly forgettable too with the exception "Negizhiyinil" which has the potential to really blow up. I debated between giving this film a 6, because it was fairly entertaining in parts vs. giving it a 4 because it'll be old news by next month and probably long forgotten-- my score on the review tells you which one I opted for. The one saving grace is Amala Paul who turns out a strong performance; I predict bigger things for her over the coming years. Overall, a disappointing release.

Dream of 125 crore on a Celluloid
raj04049212 March 2014
I accidentally stepped inside the premiere of "Nimirndhu Nil" (NN) instead of "Thekkidi". But at the end of the day, I didn't regret the decision because NN is worth the money and the whistles.

Aravind Sivasamy (Ravi) is an straightforward-modern-day-Harichandra who sticks to the rules to the last inch. When his actions rub several people on the wrong side, they strike a major blow, literally, which forces Aravind to take a drastic step that alters the face of nation, as we know it, completely.

NN is a typical Shankar movie plot handled by Samuthrakani in his own style. When Ravi goes through a single day experience similar to Ambi (Anniyan) he wages a one-man-stand quoting ancient Tamil quotes and ends up facing the modern day wrath. Therein starts the cat and tiger (not mouse) game that hooks us till the end.

Ravi & Ravi with his big-right-eye and tall-stature has made the most of the responsibility on his shoulder. His naive attitude turned villainous gives the actor lots of scenes to flex his acting muscles. Though the film handles the serious issue of corruption it has its light moments too. Every character has a funny bone inside them that pokes out even in the middle of a very serious scene.

Amala Paul has little to contribute as does Suri. Gopinath is second best to Ravi with his Neeya-Naana Charisma mirrored through his role as a TV Anchor in the movie too. Songs, though only 4, are a let down. Nasser and Sarath Kumar are breezy cameos. 11 member committee of the "147" are good comic reliefs. The biggest tickler was off screen, when the on screen characters chanted "Aravind", few naughties behind me screamed "Kejriwal".

In an attempt to skin out corruption, the screenplay has slightly exaggerated here and there with a few logical slip ups. But, ultimately Aal izz Well.

What happened after intermission?
karthikkumaravel-5256729 March 2023
The movie starts well. A loyalist man faces trouble in the world. Well that's the truth of the world. I have never heard of a story where good guys won and bad guys lost. It's always evil wins.

The movie typically got over in the intermission. I don't know why another jayam ravi character came. Since the intro of that character, the movie went into Telugu masala mode. Songs for him, lame jokes, sex comedy uffff. Tiring. Why amala paul in this movie? Why that one slow song in between the movie affecting its pace?

Dialogues were spot on. 1st half was samuthrakani's movie. 2nd half was non-sense.

In that movie itself they say play one namitha song people will forget everything. That's the reality of the world. What do you think is the capacity of the issue explained in the movie? Hardly 3 days? That too if people involved are big shots. Else it is just an hour news.

I wanted to write this review after the sting operation done by Madan ravichandran on journalists. It blasted like anything on YouTube last week. Hardly stayed for 3 days. Outside of the 1M people on YouTube no one knows about it. With these kind of people in world there is nothing called needhi, nyayam, nermai.

Nimirndhu Nil - Hunchbacked
fredberglyle13 April 2014
A typical Shankar's theme, about a man rising against corruption in India. The director got too communistic and too emotional writing the script and so spoiled the movie. The songs were good but the duet songs were too un-appropriate. The first half was okay but the latter was way too bad. I could see a lot of connections with the theme of Anniyan, Indian and even of Muragadoss's Ramana. Inspite of all the negatives mentioned above, I still feel there are some great comedy scenes (at the latter half with the villains). The movie was fast paced with lot of logical errors. My verdict : A watchable movie for the comedy. Quite entertaining but less brainy.

The director for a message
ramfitme17 February 2024
In this age, it is the director Samuthirakani who brings a good message for the youngsters. He has done many others like this. Actor Ravi's dual acting with very different characters is difficult but he made it. So was the heroine Amala Paul and hero's friend to keep lighter moments. It seems as though directors are very good at giving ideas to politicians who may not be smart otherwise. There is a clever plot by the bribe recipients who have a lot at stake to forge unity and find a solution. They do find one but that is defeated too at the end. Unless the good stands up and fights the evil, evil only proliferate. It may start off as a small percentage, but it has the potential and will spread widely if not stopped.
