Lovely and heartbreaking
klia10 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
******WARNING -- MAJOR SPOILERS*****

It's not that doomed love stories are my thing, exactly, but a lot of my favorite shows and films do feature them. And now I've added Black Sails to that list. Alas.

I adored the (unfortunately, very brief) relationship between James and Thomas. It was just SO lovely to watch their affection grow -- such warmth and respect on both sides and incredibly nuanced performances from Toby Stephens and Rupert Penry-Jones (two actors whose careers I've followed for a long time)!

Unfortunately, all of that made what happened to them SO difficult to watch, and it absolutely broke my heart. Those scenes made me cry, especially when Miranda revealed that Alfred had had Thomas institutionalized, and James's reaction to that news. So, so sad and painful! It took me quite a while to compose myself afterward, and even longer to go on to the next episode, with a very heavy heart.

Even though I've had my hopes dashed countless times, and for decades, I actually held out hope that, in 2015, the showrunners would be brave enough to have a male lead character involved in an ongoing romance with another man. And I should've known better, because, sadly, they were NOT. And because I'm watching months after the episode originally aired, I only just found out about the vehement homophobic backlash from some viewers, and "discomfort" of some higher-ups, that were likely responsible for TPTB whittling Rupert Penry-Jones's role down significantly.

I'm hugely disappointed that the squeaky-wheel, "uncomfortable" homophobes have had their way yet again, to the detriment of the media involved. It's also notable that this episode is the only one with more than one or two reviews (most have none), and those are overwhelmingly filled with homophobic vitriol about how Flint and the show were "ruined" by the revelation that he was bisexual; and the usual rants about Hollywood's gay agenda, blah blah; manly men aren't gay, blah blah; and *bigoted slurs*, blah blah.

I have to ask: Where's all the outrage over the extremely graphic female/female sex scenes? And, of course, making characters like Max and Anne gay totally ruined them forever, right? *sounds of crickets* Yeah, that's what I thought. As long as two women have sex for the titillation of the coveted male demographic, the more, the better! But have two men actually fall in love? OMG, the world's coming to an end!

Frankly, what disgusts me is encountering these tired, old double-standards and hypocrisies again and again.

The other pirate booty

Warning: Spoilers
I think it's just grand that everyone explores their deepest, darkest desires. Women on women, guys crossing swords in more ways than one. They've even mentioned one lad who buggered a goat. That'll put a shiver in your timbers!

I'm holding out hope that by the time I get to season 4 that the pirates have expanded their operation, rounded Tierra del Fuego and on up to the Galapagos Islands where, short of a whore's tent, they manage to corner one of the great turtles and diddle him right out of his shell!! Thar's the true gold, lads!

One thing is for sure, just when you think you've figured out where the plot is headed, it tacks back in the opposite direction. I have seen double-crosses and even triple-crosses which leaves my jaw hanging more slack as this show progresses.

I would like to see more sailing, fighting, and pirating on future shows. I also would like to see an honest chick fight. Not swords mind you, but a real hair-pulling, slapping and punching, clothes-tearing brawl from the bar to the beach!

Brilliance

I write in in stunned disbelief, since there are three viewers above me expressing disbelief and even prejudice, at the 'big reveal' in this episode. As this is a spoiler-free comment, I will just say that Flint's motivation and character continue to deepen and much of his determination and almost maniacal drive is explained: he is both running from his past and even from his sense of himself. His reserve and distance makes more sense than ever. The sensitivity shown in how this was done through a series of well-timed flashbacks and real-time action was highly effective.

Black Sails is so much more than a 'pirate show'. Like 'Vikings', which in some ways it closely resembles, it is a study of human nature as much as it is a costume drama. Brilliant TV.

Just brilliant

I cannot believe the amount of people who have given bad reviews to the episode just because they couldn't cope with its big reveal. The revelation about Cap. Flint is not only amazingly bold but it also makes perfect sense (it is also clear to me that it had been hinted at during season 1). It deepens the character motivations and it fits perfectly with what we know about him. My interest in what's coming next has only been increased because of this, specially considering the show has now added a new element to its study of pirate (and British) culture during the era.

Capitain Flint is even more layered now, and the show has made a bold movement for which it should be commended. Deal with it.

I wasn't expecting that!

Even by the first episode, I was pleased by the show. The fact the actors were actually dirty. That's an historical accuracy that makes me want to watch a show to begin with. I mean, you can still have an high resolution film and make it look as if it was shot during that time. I like what they did with the characters and plot so far, very thought out.

This episode was astounding both in plotting and acting. Every scene has its place in the flow of events and all of the main characters are shown in more depth. A very nice twist at the end with Vane as well.

But seriously, just a kiss? What a disappointment!! Ah ah

Know no shame.

This was an eloquent, brilliantly written, beautifully heartfelt episode, despite all the testosterone and blood flying or maybe in spite of it. I had a bit of a suspicion since season 1 and this episode confirmed it. Know no shame. Words to live by in the entirety of Black Sails. Those who are disappointed with this episode, too bad for you to not get it. Those who are bigoted about the content of this episode and it's message should feel shame for their intolerance. Kudos to the whole cast, crew, writers, and anyone else associated with this episode for your courage in taking on and supporting this constant struggle for a community who should KNOW NO SHAME.

Worst plot twist ever;
hydrocilator15 October 2023
It is apparent that the writers are starting to run out of ideas and have labeled a dart-board with various plot devices. This is how I'm imagining their writer's room now. You get three darts and whatever 3 plot devices your darts land on you have the challenge to try to convincingly write them into the episode. The other writers cheer and marvel at what the writer has to do..

dart 1: character = ???, Dart 2: flashback, dart 3: gay love interest!

How provocative! How edgy! How brilliant! We're sure to get a nod from one of the award committees now!

Let me guess what's coming next..

dart 1: new character, dart 2: love triangle!, dart 3: a goat!
