  Elena Gilbert : It's the opening day of the season, Caroline. Time to come home.

  Sheriff Liz Forbes : Caroline, you just lost one of your best friends. It makes sense that you wanna hold on to what's familiar, but Elena lost her too. And she clearly misses you.

  Caroline Forbes : No. Elena clearly has taken up residency on Planet Denial where football is more important than her boyfriend being swept away into oblivion. Do you know she's barely cried for him? And she was a full-on wreck over Bonnie for months. And every time I mention Damon, it's like nothing ever happened.

  Sheriff Liz Forbes : Caroline, Elena has experienced more grief than anyone I've ever met.

  [cell-phone buzzes] 

  Sheriff Liz Forbes : You should cut her some slack.

  [answers] 

  Caroline Forbes : What? Someone trample over Mr. Davis' flower bed again?

  Sheriff Liz Forbes : Two kids were admitted to the hospital with suspicious wounds on their necks.

  Caroline Forbes : Vampire attacks? How? Vampires can't get into Mystic Falls.

  Sheriff Liz Forbes : No, but they can lurk around the borders.

• Caroline Forbes : [Alaric brought witchcraft research books]  So how's Stefan?

  Alaric Saltzman : He's okay.

  Caroline Forbes : How often do you talk to him?

  Alaric Saltzman : I don't know. Couple times a week.

  Caroline Forbes : Oh.

  [chuckles] 

  Alaric Saltzman : I'm gonna go out on... a limb here, Caroline. Something bothering you?

  Caroline Forbes : He didn't say goodbye. Damon and Bonnie died and he just left. No phone calls, no e-mails. He... just disappeared into thin air. I haven't heard from him in months.

  [scoffs] 

  Caroline Forbes : I actually convinced myself that he was in some remote mountain region and he couldn't accept my calls.

  Alaric Saltzman : Or maybe he just doesn't wanna bother you with every half lead that goes nowhere.

  Caroline Forbes : Or maybe I just need to get over it.

  [rises] 

  Caroline Forbes : Thanks for the books.

• Elena Gilbert : [after biting her, Sarah runs away]  It's fine. I've compelled everyone else.

  Caroline Forbes : Whoa, whoa, whoa, hang on. So you're the border lurker?

  Elena Gilbert : The what?

  Caroline Forbes : Yeah, did you know my Mom's been out looking for a vampire prowler?

  Elena Gilbert : [sighs]  It's gotta be the herbs Luke's been giving me. They make me so thirsty.

  [wearily:] 

  Elena Gilbert : I'm not thinking straight.

  Caroline Forbes : Whoa, what herbs?

  Elena Gilbert : They make me see Damon. I can talk to him, and I can be with him.

  Caroline Forbes : God, is this what you've been doing this whole time? Hallucinating your dead boyfriend?

  Elena Gilbert : I tried to grieve him, Caroline. Trust me, I know grief.

  [scoffs] 

  Elena Gilbert : I've got grieving down to a science at this point, and I tried.

  [tearfully:] 

  Elena Gilbert : But every time... I let it sink in... that I'm never gonna see him again... I feel like I'm gonna die.

  Caroline Forbes : [sighs]  Look, I get It, okay? I do.

  [comforts] 

  Caroline Forbes : But... there are better ways to get through this.

  Elena Gilbert : Like what? Like dropping out of school and having picnics with my Mom near the town border? Or maybe I could pull a Stefan and just bounce from country to country chasing some false hope that we're gonna find a way to bring Damon and Bonnie back. We're all getting through it.

  [tearfully:] 

  Elena Gilbert : This is me getting through it... okay?

  Caroline Forbes : Yeah, but you're not getting through It, Elena. You're just pressing pause.

  [sighs] 

  Caroline Forbes : Look, I'll call my Mom and she can fix all this. But you need to get out of here. Go hide, okay? So just... Go.

  [Elena scampers off] 

• Tyler Lockwood : [on cell-phone]  Where are you? The game's gonna start in, like, fifteen minutes.

  Caroline Forbes : Do you know Elena has some witchy drug problem? Yeah, Luke Parker has been feeding her some concoction that allows her to hallucinate Damon.

  Tyler Lockwood : Whoa. Slow down. What?

  Caroline Forbes : It gets her all bloodlusty and confused and she nearly killed a girl with it.

  Tyler Lockwood : This makes no sense.

  Caroline Forbes : Yeah, well, neither did the fact that she got over Damon so quickly when he died. Now It's crystal clear she hasn't. She's just living in fantasy land.

  Tyler Lockwood : Is she okay?

  Caroline Forbes : She's a mess. As long as Luke keeps playing witch doctor, she's not gonna get any better.

  Tyler Lockwood : Let me deal with him.
