I saw a review for this show in a movie preview reel and decided to watch. It was a bit crude for my taste, but funny.

There are times, when they show the "footage" for the fictional show, that it seems as though you are watching that. It can be a tiny bit disorienting.

In fact, the strangest thing about the show, after watching just one episode, is that you start wondering if the same cynicism they are portraying by the fictional crew of the "reality" show is actually going on in the writing of Unreal itself. They talk about the "villain," the "milfie," etc. and cynically manipulate them into doing juicy scenes to hook a gullible audience. But there are also a couple of throwaway racism lines and a token black staff member to react to them on the show--how is that different?

The fine dividing line between the show, and whether it will work for me, is whether the jaded manipulators portrayed on the show don't get me thinking too much about how the Unreal writers, too, are overdoing things in their depiction of "behind the scenes" television. After all, it isn't a documentary.

After one episode, the characters were compelling enough that I'll watch for a bit more.
