So It Goes Don't Ya Know!
Hitchcoc5 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This episode moves things on. Lorne completes his plan to extort a million dollars by playing both sides of the fence. Lester is in a jail cell with the two guys who were going to dump him into an ice fishing hole if he didn't give up Lorne. After squeezing his infected hand, he finally gives in. He admits that while he was innocent of anything, Malvo killed Hess. Molly continues her efforts to be heard and finally gets the attention of her supervisor. Lester is now a suspect. Unfortunately, for everyone, the infection finally takes over and he is hospitalized. Molly finds out that they discovered a shotgun pellet with some cloth attached, evidence that he was somehow involved. We have to remember that Lester, henpecked as he was, never intended Lorne to do what he did. We also have the continual soul searching by Gus Grimley, who is really getting all existential. The question now is whether Lorne has what he wants and will back off. Also, what will those two strange but dangerous men do next and why?

Fargo: S1E5 "The Six Ungraspables" Review - King Cadmium
kingcadmium1 March 2022
When Lester has a close call, Molly makes an unorthodox decision. Gus weighs some sound advice from his neighbour, and Malvo gets what he wants.

What I Liked:

The cinematography is solid, and each scene perfectly implements its beautiful and mesmerizing music score. On top of that, each actor gives a strong performance, with Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman being the clear standouts.

Malvo is one of the most intriguing individuals you will see on television, with Thornton's portrayal being nothing short of superb, along with Freeman's portrayal of Lester.

What I Disliked:

Similar to the premiere, there is a plot hole regarding the information Lester knows about Malvo, somehow knowing his name despite never receiving this information. I doubt he would have asked Malvo his name in the premiere, considering how their interaction went.

Given this is a setup episode, there are some uninteresting portions, mainly the scenes involving Gus.

Overall:

Though not the best this show has offered so far, this is still a great setup episode. Fargo has been a highly enthralling show to watch so far.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode advances the plot a little but mostly leaves the payoffs for the next episode. This is okay, but it means this episode lacks many surprises or memorable moments, making it more run-of-the-mill. Molly goes to question Lester but the actual questioning is left for the next episode. Lorne pulls up outside Gus's flat and watches him but doesn't actually do anything.

It isn't short of good moments though. Lester's squirming in the prison cell as the two hitmen interrogate him reminds us of how little he has changed. For all of Lorne's talk of being a man, Lester still bends to people's wishes, tripping over himself to keep them happy. If what Lorne says about the world is right and it's a hunt or be hunted world, Lester is on the menu. As Lorne hilariously manipulates Stavros into paying the blackmail money, we learn how well is able to just observe things about people that they may not even know about themselves. He continues to be the most fascinating character because of his almost god-like omniscience.

As for Molly, it seems probable that she will be the innocent who dies in this story. Either her or Gus.

Warning: Spoilers
Gus (his flat is really cool) talked to his neighbor at night about what to do with Lorne. Molly figured it all out. Lester said the name of the killer to the duo. Lorne's continuing to inflict biblical plagues on the supermarket king.
