Photo: Disney Investor Day/Disney As anyone would have assumed, Disney is sprinting zealously through the avant-garde streaming industry, evident by their acquisition of Hulu and ESPN+ in addition to their massive vault of beloved content on their own service, Disney+. Though the company does get a lot of mileage out of their stories, they are trying to match pace with juggernauts Netflix and Amazon Prime, who are now both award-winning streaming services, along with HBO Max who’ve been on the climb up too. Disney announced on December 2nd that their streaming service had surpassed 137 million subscribers, a triumphant barometer reached that’s sure to grow. With that comes a lot more content, and Disney 2020 Investor Day made for very promising news of the second-largest media conglomerate in the world. Before Alicia Vikander strapped on boots to play video game icon Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, Angelina Jolie played the athletic role over two films: Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003). But Jolie didn’t become the weapon-wielding Croft without fighting a few behind-the-scenes battles of her own.
When Jolie landed the role of the action heroine in the 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, the 24-year-old star, then dating Billy Bob Thornton, had a wild-child reputation. In a previously published excerpt in The Hollywood Reporter from a biography of film executive Sherry Lansing...

The Gilmore Girls revival is the gift that keeps on giving — and, on Nov, 28, that will be the case quite literally. On Tuesday — which is pretty much one year to the day that Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life made its debut on Netflix — the four 90-minute installments will be available for purchase on DVD and Blu-ray.

In “Abundant Acreage Available,” Amy Ryan plays a tough-minded woman who reunites with her brother (Terry Kinney) to bury their father on the farm where he raised them. As they argue about where to lay him to rest, another set of siblings from their father’s past show up to further complicate matters, laying claim to the land and injecting themselves into the center of this parochial setting.
Ryan’s character remains a fierce, defiant voice who pushes back against her brother’s religious convictions and the interlopers who question her solitary way of life. It’s a commanding performance that dominates this quiet, understated movie, and it makes you wonder why Ryan — an Oscar nominee for “Gone Baby Gone” — doesn’t land such impressive leading roles more often.

Labor Day weekend is the calm before the specialized storm. “Wind River” (Weinstein) went wide quickly, and managed the #3 spot it an weak period for most theaters. The company also released its long-blooming “Tulip Fever,” which flopped as expected with just over $1 million. Meanwhile, Lionsgate/Pantelion’s “Do It Like An Hombre,” a low-budget Mexican comedy, did twice as well in half the theaters.

Summer box office was dismal, with totals down more than 15 percent from last year. Or was it? In the specialized realm, things are looking up. Last year, limited releases grossed less than $90 million; this year, it will be over $100 million.
That’s good news — but careful analysis still shows a troubled season riddled with issues and failures that should make top distributors take great care when bidding at the festivals this fall.
Some observations of the mixed-bag results:
There’s Only One Real Winner
Amazon’s “The Big Sick” grossed about $40 million. That’s the top performance of the year among independent/platform release titles, and a decent showing for the reported $12 million Sundance acquisition.

The first Tomb Raider movie was made against the clock - and a contractual need to keep moving, and moving fast...
Next summer, the eternal battle to make a compelling, successful movie adaptation of a videogame continues, with a new take on Tomb Raider. This time, it’s Alicia Vikander who’ll be bringing Lara Croft to the big screen, in an origin story that has inevitable eyes on developing into a long-running movie franchise.
It’s the best part of 20 years since we were first down this particular road before, though, and in the intervening period, the Tomb Raider videogames have been rebooted to impressive effect. But there’s nothing that can quite match the cultural impact when Lara Croft first arrived on the scene.

The Vampire Bat (1933) was a staple of TV late-night movie programming well into the 1980s. Too often the running time of this maltreated film was irreverently trimmed or stretched to accommodate commercial breaks or better fit into a predetermined time slot. With black-and-white films almost completely banished from the schedules of local television affiliates by 1987, TV Guide disrespectfully dismissed The Vampire Bat as a “Dated, slow-motion chiller.” That’s an unfair appraisal. But with the MTV generation in the ascendant and Fangoria gleefully splashing the lurid and blood-red exploits of such slice-and-dice horror icons as Michael Meyers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger on its covers, it’s somewhat understandable why the other-worldly atmospherics of The Vampire Bat were perceived as little more than a celluloid curio – an antiquated footnote in the annals of classic horror.

Forrest Gump was a huge hit - but it's worth remembering just what a massive, massive gamble it was. Here's just a slice of that story...
Few major Hollywood blockbusters of the 1990s can lay claim to being some kind of cultural phenomenon, but surely Forrest Gump can. Love or loathe the film, its dialogue has slipped into everyday language, it’s inspired a spin-off bunch of restaurants, and it’s one of the top grossing films of the decade. Oh, and it won a bunch of Oscars, including a second consecutive Best Actor win for Tom Hanks.
It’s often said that the most successful films, though, have tumultuous behind the scene stories. I remember when Richard Donner directed Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas in Assassins (based on a heavily butchered script by the pre-Matrix Wachowskis), and it was widely reported that the shoot was a calm and very pleasurable one.

How Leonard Nimoy nearly directed Star Trek 7, and how Marlon Brando wanted to play the villain...
Chances are that hardened Trek fans already know the story that the late Marlon Brando was linked with the role of Soren in the seventh Star Trek movie, Star Trek: Generations. But in a new book, a little more information has come to light.
See related Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy 3: what happened?
The actor, by then well past the peak of his acting powers, nonetheless brought a gravitas a project, the kind that comes with being one of the best actors who ever lived.
The film itself became a priority project for Paramount in the early 1990s, and Leonard Nimoy was initially approached and offered the director’s chair. Nimoy wasn’t happy with the script as it stood, though, arguing that it needed a lot of rewriting.

We’re knocking on the door of summer, and that means lots of big properties are ready to be unleashed. But it’s not too late to read books exploring some recent films, as well as some new works about Sherry Lansing, film noir, and Steve McQueen. Since the movie industry seems perfectly willing to forgive all sins when it comes to Mel Gibson, it can be fun to look back and remember a time when he wasn’t the kind and sensitive soul that Hollywood seems to believe he is these days. Case in point: The Hollywood Reporter has shared a story from features editor Stephen Galloway’s Leading Lady, a biography of studio exec Sherry Lansing, that involves Gibson flipping out when budget negotiations for Braveheart didn’t go his way in the early ’90s.
Lansing was heading up Paramount at the time, and after convincing Gibson to direct and star, he went on to meet with the studio’s head of business affairs to sketch out a budget. 20th Century Fox had agreed to pay for two-thirds of the film, but Paramount wasn’t willing to pay the final third that Gibson wanted. Mel Gibson momentarily lost his cool during budget talks for his 1995 film Braveheart — and even the famed actor and director admits his actions may have been “a little over the top.”
According to a new excerpt from Leading Lady: Sherry Lansing and the Making of a Hollywood Groundbreaker in The Hollywood Reporter, Gibson hurled a glass ashtray through a wall when money negotiations weren’t going well for the film that went on to win five Oscars.
After securing two-thirds of the film’s $65-$70 million budget from 20th Century Fox, Gibson reportedly met with Paramount Pictures over breakfast.

Hollywood is crazy. I thought I’d get that out of the way. It’s a business made up of creative egos, and when you combine the two together, it’s possible to create a perfect storm of ridiculousness. One man who is considered to be one of those creative egos is Mel Gibson. Don’t get us wrong, the man knows his way around a camera like nobody’s business. But oftentimes, when people speak about Mel Gibson’s talent, it comes with a giant asterisk.
If you’ll recall, some years ago, Gibson landed in some hot water due to his racist comments, and until Hacksaw Ridge came out late last year, there had been very little news regarding Gibson in the industry. Sure, he popped up in The Expendables 3, but apart from that, it was virtually radio silent. Following those comments, it took the industry some...

Mel Gibson nearly passed on directing and starring in 1995's Braveheart. It was in the early 1990s, post-Lethal Weapon 3; the actor was in his late 30s ("the Bradley Cooper-Leo DiCaprio stage,” as he calls it) and wanted to be judicious about the scripts he committed to. That's according to THR executive features editor Stephen Galloway's upcoming biography of legendary studio chief Sherry Lansing, Leading Lady (out April 25 from Crown Archetype).
Alan Ladd Jr., who'd recently stepped down as MGM chairman and had been brought to Paramount as a producer by Lansing, arranged a meet-up between Gibson and the studio head, who hoped to convince him to sign on to the project over breakfast at the Four Seasons Hotel.

This charming Roy Rogers oater could reboot interest in vintage ‘series’ westerns. Basically a film for little kids, it’s earnestly played by all concerned and director William Witney’s direction sparkles. The added filip that makes the difference is the beautifully restored Trucolor image — Roy’s wonder horse Trigger is indeed magnificent. I listened carefully, but I don’t think Roy actually says, “Yippie-ki-yay, M_____f____r.”

In a newly published excerpt in The Hollywood Reporter from an upcoming biography about film executive Sherry Lansing, new details have been revealed about the making of the smash 1987 film Fatal Attraction.
And while the book recalls the drama to get the film made and the fight to keep the original ending, perhaps the most shocking revelation came from “that” scene — better known as “the bunny” scene.
In it, Glenn Close‘s unhinged character boils a live bunny owned by the family of the man she has an affair with, played by Michael Douglas.

Angelina Jolie didn't become Lara Croft without overcoming a few behind-the-scenes hurdles. It's been 16 years since the Oscar winner fought her way onto the silver screen as the weapon-wielding action star, but according to a newly published excerpt in The Hollywood Reporter from an upcoming biography about film executive Sherry Lansing, there were a few hoops Jolie had to jump through personally to secure the iconic role. The most prominent of these hoops were drug tests administered to the actress in the process of filming Tomb Raider. As author Stephen Galloway wrote in Leading Lady, the film's director Simon West viewed the star's "baggage" at the time—rumors of drug...

Leading Lady, the new biography of Sherry Lansing, the legendary film executive had to do something she never did during her 12 years running Paramount Pictures: relinquish control. Lansing, 72, participated in the biography but she and her husband, filmmaker William Friedkin, granted author Stephen Galloway full autonomy to research her life, talk to dozens of her closest friends (and not-so-close collaborators) and write the book as he saw fit. Having read the final product after four years of interviews, Lansing invited THR to her Century City office (overlooking the Fox lot, which she famously ran as the first...

Tom Cruise may be Scientology's most famous face, but even he's admitted to being afraid of practicing his beliefs openly. The Jack Reacher star was a topic of discussion in Stephen Galloway's new book, Leading Lady, which focuses on former CEO of Paramount Pictures Sherry Lansing. The book recounts a time in which Cruise's Scientology beliefs got in the way of his professional career. In 2003, Lansing had to step between Cruise—a crucial asset for Paramount—and the studio's former president of production, John Goldwyn. At the time, the producer was in the middle of a divorce from his Scientologist wife, Colleen Camp, and fighting for custody of their...

Isabelle Huppert in Werner Schroeter's MalinaFresh off the triumph of her Golden Globe win and Oscar nomination for her performance in Paul Verhoeven’s Elle (2016), the French actress Isabelle Huppert is, at 63 and four decades into her career, starting to reap major American award season appreciation. The Golden Globe was a surprise win, but to those who are familiar with her work, it’s well-deserved. Her accumulation of critical acclaim and European awards has garnered her the title of the “French Meryl Streep,” but her career’s variety, international scope and pure nerve outstrip even Streep’s. “Fearless” could be the most commonly used descriptor applied to Huppert, who is known to take on roles that other major actresses won’t go near: insanity, depravity, crime, and other controversial subject matter are Huppert hallmarks. However, it’s not merely the nature of her characters that sets her apart, it...

The cast of Stranger Things brought the fun to the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night before they won one of the night's biggest categories. After partying together the night before, the hit show's younger cast - Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, Finn Wolfhard, and Caleb McLaughlin - all hit the red carpet in style. They were soon followed by older stars Natalia Dyer, Joe Keery, and Shannon Purser, who took some time for a few cute group photos. Leading lady Winona Ryder (who was looking very '90s It girl, we should note) flashed a few smiles, as did costars David Harbour and Matthew Modine. They gave their epic night at the Golden Globes a run for its money. Related:Someone Crown Sterling K. Brown and His Stunning Wife Award Season King and Queen...

David O. Russell cringes at first when revisiting his 1996 film “Flirting with Disaster.”
“The first half, all I see is me as a beginning filmmaker,” Russell told the audience Friday night at AFI Fest’s 20th anniversary screening of the movie, sponsored by FilmStruck, Miramax, and IndieWire. “But the movie is like a runaway wagon, and it does just take off. It reminds me of the comedies that inspired me.”

Russell was joined by “Flirting” star Lily Tomlin, who said she joined the movie (Russell’s second) partly because she loved the director’s first film, “Spanking the Monkey.”
“When I read the [‘Flirting’] script, I laughed every time,” she said. “It was just so hilarious.”
Russell said “Flirting” was very much a movie of its time: “In the mid-’90s, sexual dysfunction and family dysfunction was all the rage.

Here's to the thought of Nicole Kidman back in an Oscar lineup - Cheers!
Lion and Queen of Katwe were runner ups to La La Land for Toronto's People Choice prize and people were loving on Nicole Kidman and Lupita Nyong'o as warm mothers in those films. With a strange absence of contenders to this point (especially given the comparatively abundant Leading Actress wars) they both move way up the chart. Also shifting on the chart: Felicity Jones, Nina Arianda, Greta Gerwig x 2, Live by Night ladies, and a few drop-offs now that the films have been seen.
In category-fraud-loving Hollywood we have to assume that one of the leading ladies (Best Actress chart is not yet updated) will demote herself to secure a nomination in a weaker field. Viola Davis is a possibility in Fences -- in the first Broadway run her Fences character was considered "featured" (Tony...

It’s cinema sequel time once more, film fans. Generally follow-ups pop up with great frequency during the Summer months, but this flick bends the release rules on many levels. For one thing, a dozen years have passed by since the last installment. Not quite the 20 years between Independence Days, but still rather lengthy. Two more things: it’s based on a book series that focuses on a female protagonist. No, it’s not from a Ya (young adult) series, so get The Hunger Games and Twilight, out of your heads, since this characters has several years on Bella and Katniss. Plus, this is not an action epic set in a dystopian future, rather the present day (although some elements do venture into fantasy). So in 2001 we delved into her diary, three years later she took us to the edge of reason, and now we get to meet Bridget Jones’S Baby.
