With this episode, I find myself really mourning Peter Pan for, as of now, Zelena seems like a petty villain. One which can't stand others being happy and because of that she seeks to intrude and stop any happiness from coming to those who she may feel undeserving. And with that, you can see a path to humanize her probably coming from Snow. But, as much as Zelena is winding me up for an eye roll, there are some silver linings.
Topic 1: Night Root Cures Fears
Between his time in the Enchanted Forest and the present, Charming, also known as David, is having some issues. Most of this stems from an internal fear that he failed Emma. He abandoned her twice, once when the 1st curse happened, and again when it ended. This combination, added with a dose of a new baby on the way, is giving him nightmares.
So, being that these fears started in the Enchanted Forest, he decides drinking is the solution, well until Robin Hood turns him onto Night Root, a would be cure.
Topic 2: My Name is Rapunzel
Leading Charming to meet princess Rapunzel. And with this, he gets his first experience with Night Root which causes a manifestation of your fear to appear. But, since only Rapunzel at this point has used the Night Root, we can only see what it would do for her. You see, in a rather quickly done back story, Rapunzel's past is sped through in which something happened to her kingdom leading to her brother being in trouble and her running away to find Night Root to cure her fears. However, because of Night Root's effect, she created a prison for herself, one in which she has been in for who knows how many years.
But, with Charming coming to her rescue, and imposing some type of strength in her, she defeats her fears. Making for perhaps one of the most boring stories featuring a Disney princess, especially when you compare it to Mulan, Aurora, Ariel and the others. I should note though, there is the ever slightest possibility we may see her again, though there is little to no hint that may happen.
Topic 3: Zelena's Plan
As of now, we remain under the assumption that Zelena created this curse under a similar reason as Regina. She wanted to cause misery, and since she has multiple targets, it seems everyone is worth going after. But, since Regina is already suffering, since Henry has no real memory of her, it makes me question why she is going after Snow?
Then again, Zelena speaks of her father in such a way which seems to make it seem like she loved him, but he didn't match her feelings. So, perhaps she wants to stand by and watch as Snow's child is born, perhaps without a father, or a father who is a shell of who he once was. Either way, her movements seem to be aimed at more being a villain who attacks the characters mental states, in the most boring way possible, than being an active villain you could love to hate.
Overall
I really hope they kick Zelena up a notch for Peter Pan's shoes are so big to fill. At this point during the Neverland arc, he was fearsome, compelling and brought life to the show. As for Zelena, the best thing she did was bring Rumple back into his more interesting form and making it seem only the Mr. Gold character died. And considering he escapes at the end of the episode, while Zelena maybe a disappointment so far, maybe Rumple can make up for that, even if Zelena has control over him.
