Catastrophically shoddy, it might as well be a parody
quincytheodore26 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Remember 90s movie or television show where the characters would swing guns while poor flash effect painted over the scene? Rz-9 takes it to another level with characters shooting an entire clip while running like a headless chicken, missing the target then resorting to headbutt. It's a series of choppy production value, so utterly horrible that it gradually becomes more unintentionally funny as it goes. It tries to convince audience with serious theme, but the clunky visual and rigid acting are only good for accidental parody of sci-fi.

A government agent turns into a whistleblower as he finds the cruel method to be intolerable. The titular Rz-9 is a part of the group that is sent to capture this traitor. To its credit, the movie attempt to use terrorism and religious premise, but those delicate matters deserve much more than its underwhelming acting and illogical plot. Acting is superbly monotonous, characters would come across as one-dimensional or even downright annoying. They utter bland script with the passion of bored customer service.

The scenes are ridiculous, there's no choreography or any decent logic at all. People would engage in fire fight without cover, flailing their guns erratically and even slapping each other like kindergarten kids. They would get shot in the back, act like their arm is hurt but bleed in the stomach. At one scene their teammate is snatched mere feet away, but these people unrealistically look the other way as though they have the intelligent of stupid video game AI.

Barely anything makes sense here, the best thing it has on the production is probably the costume alone. Effects like the explosion are nothing but blurry green screen gimmick and when it tries to bring drones or any sci-fi antics they seem like images copied and pasted over. There's just no coherency on the plot, acting and visual.

The clumsy graphic and acting makes for a brief entertainment as inadvertent parody, but for a sci-fi flick, old Power Rangers show has more appeal that Rz-9.

not a sci -fi really
garbcio25 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
A guy who work for government has been put on black list and decided to join rebels or "terrorists" who fight against government. Most action is about two opposite sides soldiers running in the forest and shooting each other. Prolonged dialogs explain and justify their actions. Only sci-fi accents are fancy drones, fancy guns and funny masks used by government special force. It is as much sci-fi as "Rambo" movie, but not as good. If you look for sci-fi movie you can skip this one. What I like is good filming, not like those with shaking amateur cameras and action is in different places. What I don't like is senseless killing and flat dialogs that are too long. And yes, calling it sci-fi movie is just a joke, bad one.

meh, bad but I have seen worse
vindalootiger17 June 2015
While I can not agree that this should be in the theater, it was fine for a B wanna-be action thriller. While the writers show a profound disconnect between current political realities, it has been amusing. If you need a good background move or just need something mind numbing this is good.

What really nauseated me was the religious connections made about the main characters, it seems obvious that parts were intentionally cut not to irritate the current religious right. Sadly this is a rather ignorant way of writing, that being said, conservative extremists survivalist types find this movie great.

Acting started good, 30 minutes in it got way worse. I think what bugs me the most is that no one seems to know how actual military personnel act.

There were soooo many technical holes, writing holes, direction holes, I could not list them all here, artistic direction was very low par too. I strongly suspect that this movie had many parts cut in script revisions and the editing room floor.

Generally the cliché laden dialog, technical writing problems, and absurdest understanding of world politics, killed this movie. The cg effects were OK, foley and muzzle flash syncing was bad, just bad, as one other reviewer put it "1980's quality"

Great Comedy
tbroz25 June 2015
This movie is laughable at best. Everything about it is atrocious. From the "elite soldiers" who can't properly aim a gun and shoot, to the awful flashing bullets and the "blood" which resembles red powder being thrown at them.

All the actors in this movie seem to lack any basic human instinct as they do not react when there is someone emptying a magazine in their general vicinity as the bullets rarely hit. It is comedic when in the middle of a gun fight, a person runs up to the soldier, stabs him in the throat and doesn't get shot immediately by the soldier right behind him.

A group of high school kids could make a better movie than this.

Now if you want a movie for pure entertainment and comedy because of the train wreck this movie is, I'd rate it a solid 8

I have no scrip nor actors yet I film
zombie-3229 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
May contain spoilers The overall idea had merit the script jumped around abysmally. Continuity or what passed for it was a complete joke.

You have an squad of elite "Erasers" who start off able to shoot a feather off a flying finch at 2km but by the halfway mark none could shoot the broadside of a barn even if they had been shackled to the wall. I was amazed that none of the Erasers managed to shoot themselves in their own face they had become that incompetent.

If they were the elite then they would have gunned down the resistance/terrorists/bible bashers at range before they would have known that they were under attack.

Why were the only long range drones used to attack cities but could not be used to hunt down the resistance? The acting was so wooden it was a major fire hazard.

I want my life back that I spent watching this failure

Lots of fighting
blumdeluxe17 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
"Rz-9" tells the story of a dark future where the government has put the public under mass surveillance. When one government agent finds himself on the edge of being investigated because of his religious believes, he joins the rebel forces with his sister and they try to escape to Canada.

The movie is not really a thrill to watch. It can't really decide between dystopia, action film and religious elements. None of those elements are presented badly, even though especially the more personal and emotional scenes didn't really convince me. The rest is pretty much lots of chasing and gunfights, nothing I can get too excited about but still told with enough story around to provide an acceptable plot.

All in all this is something you can definetly miss out on without a bad conscience but still the ratings here seem a bit harsh to me. If you like fights and action, you might actually enjoy this film.

Oh dear.

Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear.... oh fkn dear! Review is too short? O. K. According to dermatologists, the best way to remove belly button lint is to routinely clean your belly button when you bathe. Warm, soapy water should dislodge the fluff.

Noob Saibot?
ghostfacecosplay3 October 2022
The cover soldier and all the soldiers are wearing a Noob Saibot (Mortal Kombat) airsoft mask. If that doesn't tell you how bad this movie is, i don't know what will. Anyways, my review is too short, so i shall now share who Noob Saibot is.

"Noob Saibot is a fictional character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game franchise by Midway Games and NetherRealm Studios. Initially introduced as a black silhouette of the series' other male ninjas and sharing their special moves, he was given his own unique movement style and appearance in later games. His name is derived from the surnames of Mortal Kombat creators Ed Boon and John Tobias spelled backwards."

Interesting Sci-Fi in Concept, but Underwhelms in Execution
daniel-mannouch7 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is a Red Dawn variant featuring good art design, ok, if frugal action sequences carried by good sound design and overblown performances that would be hilarious if the film wasn't dealing with such heavy and relevant themes. Whilst I always appreciate the attempt at social consciousness in a low budget direct to dvd film, you know just for variety's sake, the execution is lacklustre and gives the film the coppery taste of Christian fundamentalist propaganda, even though i'm very confident this is not the case here.

RZ-9 is one long chase through the woods, peppered with some admittedly grounded, some would say unambitious, world-building. It's a decent stab at a gritty dystopian film that features a rebellion narrative as per convention, oh yeah how could i forget, there's some drones in this film. The CGI is alright on them and the designs are kinda cool looking. Of course, you see very little of them, but when they do pop up, they are convincing as a menace, most of the time.

RZ-9 is an ok sci-fi dystopian film with ok action sequences and overkill acting. Looking for a gritty sci-fi fix with a bit of the ol' martial fetishism about it, then this will do it for ya.

Military State
bemyfriend-4018414 February 2021
This movie is also called Military State; and is streamed on Tubi. It is very similar to The Humanity Bureau; and some parts of A Handmaid's Tale. The Eraser Team is a little embarrassing; in their off-the-shelf masks, and goofy armored suits. It was a little disturbing to meet the rebel team, only to see them all get butchered in the next few scenes. But truth, justice and the America Way won out over evil oppressiveness and stuff. Gets five stars.

District 9 from a Combat Angle
in198425 May 2015
8.1 of 10. The film's summary doesn't really do it justice or capture the film adequately. Part of the reason is that it's clearly lacking the big production and marketing money. That's noticed in the video FX to some extent, but not the cheap stuff you get off a TV quickie. It still very much deserves to be in theaters.

In addition to focusing more on the combat and people doing the combat more than the technology versus District 9 (2009), it's also a modern-day, this-could-be-happening-now war film. There's virtually nothing in this that doesn't already exist and the world is essentially as-is except for being at war. The similarities are sometimes scary in the closeness and the deliberate, unambiguous way they are pointed out in the film.

What's missing is, as mentioned, some more realistic video FX and also some of the subtlety and plot setup done in films with more writers and development time. There are also a few unnecessary clichés, like ridiculous gun fights involving soldiers with automatic, armor piercing weapons and normal people where no one is getting hit and bullets are all but infinite. Despite the budget, the cast is well selected and comes through with solid acting.

Needs better casting, original sound track bigger budget. Worth watching? Yes.
aselnermusic28 January 2017
Drops the ball in several areas. The first was the obviously "canned music". Some of the cast came off no better than that of a high school play. Well choreographed and cinematography, it moved along nicely in spite of what must have been a small budget. That, I believe was the downfall. I'll take a science fiction "B" movie over a romantic comedy any day.The best I can say is that in spite of shortcomings, I watched it to the end. Given more time, better casting, and an original sound track and it would have had my vote of 8.5 rather than 6. This movie had to have been well written as a short novel. As a film, it's subject the those shortcomings mentioned. Worth watching? Yes, in a pinch.

That's how it should be done!
Well I was disappointed that there is no review for this wonderful film, so I took it on myself to write one. I'm going to mention some of the (very relevant and current) themes that I think are going on in this film, so that I help you judge whether it's worth your time or not:

  • Enforcer turned rebel (akin to the film/book Cloud Atlas)

  • Modern warfare tech: mass government surveillance, drones, exoskeletons, mass incarceration, corporate mercenaries

  • Notion of terrorism expanded to include potentially everyone

  • Manhunt of rebels in the woods

Graphics, sound, action, acting and dialogue, the film is above average, so I think the deciding factor for whether you'll like it or not is whether you enjoy the above themes.

A good tv movie, just accept it for what it is.
vinniemac-5711221 October 2020
Bad acting, poor special effects, awful dialog..... but I liked it. With a bigger budget and better actors it could have been better, but I have seen a lot worse. I give it a ten just to annoy all the naysayers that think they are god's gift to film critics. The actual storyline could be closer to the truth than a lot realise judging by what is going on in America today.

This movie would be even more awesome with a bigger budget
veonneanderson6 January 2022
Get idea but needs investors. I think they did well with the budget given to them. Being able to film and change scenes with the amount of actors involved - good job.
