As Amy tries to understand her sexuality, Karma seemingly is just trying to understand Liam.

On MTV's homegrown scripted series, and not the British imports, there seems to always be a sense of heart. Albeit, the sense of heart is sometimes drowned in a highly embellished, and likely unrealistic to a point, High School environment, but you can't have it all. Speaking specifically on Faking It though, while most of the drama deals with relationship issues, as we increasingly take a look at Amy trying understand this mental, and emotional, epiphany, it is hard to argue that amongst all the nonsense Lauren and, even to a point, Karma brings, there truly is something which makes this program seem like it is for more than kicks and giggles.

Topic 1: Nudes - Lauren

While Lauren is seen as this conservative girl, this doesn't mean she wants to be a complete traditional square. Like anyone else, she wants to be desired, feel sexy, and have her boyfriend recognize this. But, being that this show isn't really trying to make Lauren as deep as I would like her to be, while she maybe want the things mentioned, seemingly she is more looking for the type of scandal to put her in the center of everyone's attention. Hence why she sends her boyfriend some sexy, non-nude, pictures seemingly hoping he would pass them around. Though, it can be argued, hearing her boyfriend deleted her sexy pics maybe the real issue since though the pictures circulating would be bad, him being nonchalant about her trying to turn him on seems almost worse.

Topic 2: The Skwerkel Empire – Karma & Liam

With Karma mad at Liam for going into that car with the Skwerkel representative, this leads to many awkward moments when Karma's parents come to the school to sell organic food and massages. If only because Liam seemingly loves her odd parents for they not only fit many of his beliefs, but Karma's mom hugs him and seemingly, though uncomfortable at first, as time goes on he learns to quite love her hugging him. But, this complicates things highly for Karma since she thinks Liam is a jerk who not only may have solely liked her because of his lesbian fetish, but also was playing games with her after she tried to express her feelings openly.

Thing is, that representative we saw wasn't some lady he is messing around with but his sister. You see, Liam's family found Skwerkel and he is the only one amongst his family not into the corporate side of things. And while this may not seem like a big deal, only Shane, and now Karma, know that Liam is related to this empire. And with Liam sharing, as well as Karma sharing some of her own family issues, like thinking her parents interest in her more so deal with her coming out than anything else, they have a genuine moment. One good enough for Karma to be comfortable enough to maybe have sex, or at least make out, with Liam.

Topic 3: Nothing Compares 2 U - Amy

With Amy realizing that she likely isn't straight, though she can recognize Oliver is attractive, she decides to really hone the idea of being with a girl, and even find herself a girlfriend to share the experience with for she frankly is sick of faking it. Leading the show to talk about what are either realities of being gay or lesbian, or just using common stereotypes for possible laughs.

You see, since Amy wants to find a real girlfriend she seeks Shane to introduce her to a place where she can meet a lesbian. Thus leading us to see various lesbian archetypes which vary from lipstick lesbians, to the Kristen Stewarts, to butch lesbians. Which may be offensive, I'm not 100% sure, but the situation isn't helped any by Shane talking about how wrong Amy's approach is. Amy, who believes she can't tell if she likes someone until she kisses them, is aggressive, a bit vulgar, and very forward. Something Shane believes could work for gay men since they just want to hookup, but not lesbians who want to bond and, well be the stereotypical girl. However, thanks to a lesbian dating app, Syzyr, Amy meets a nice lesbian girl named Jasmine. Who is Black, which I solely mention for seeing Black lesbians I feel is rare. Especially teen-aged ones.

Anyway, the purpose of Jasmine is presenting the idea of what could happen if Amy confessed to Karma. For while Jasmine isn't that developed, much less all she did was ask her friend and get rejected, Amy has this fear that it will be more than rejection she will get. She will lose her best friend since Kindergarten, the one who counts how long it has been since she spoke to Amy, and all that will be left is this weird connection like when you see your childhood home. It's recognizable, but no longer something in your life. Thankfully though, Shane reminds Amy that her worst case scenario isn't likely. After all, Karma is the one who takes the lead often when it comes to showing any type of affection, and it does take two to make a really good kiss happen. Plus, speaking on his own heterosexual experience, he thinks Karma pining over Liam is just her overcompensating because she wants something unobtainable. Which, to me, is odd for him to say since Liam would have been his friend for longer than he has been friends with Amy. But I guess it is a case of queers over bros.

Leaving us with Karma maybe hooking up with Liam, Amy finally picking up her phone and talking with Karma, and us wondering if Amy may ever be happy. I mean, Jasmine is on the bench waiting to be called up, and it would be cool to see her become part of the show, but I doubt it will happen.
