Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness has taken the locked down world by storm, inspiring a whirlwind of memes, at least one lawsuit, and even prompting Netflix to release a hastily put together ‘Aftershow’ catching up with some of the main players after the series became a humungous hit.
Reaching viewers who wouldn’t necessarily have called themselves documentary fans, Tiger King may have inspired audiences to seek out other true life stories. But if you’re someone who just needs more like Tiger King, Finders Keepers, which is available for free with Amazon Prime, is your next stop. So much so that the 2015 documentary, directed by Bryan Carberry and Clay Tweel, actually feels like a companion piece.
Here’s the logline: “A story about fame, addiction and a custody battle over a man’s leg.”
Intrigued? It gets weirder.

On executive producers Jack Bender and David E. Kelley’s chilling of Stephen King’s Mr. Mercedes, plays the titular serial killer, Brady Hartsfield. Over the course of the first nine episodes, audiences have witnessed just how tormented and demented of a psychopath Hartsfield is as he’s killed innocent people and continuously terrorized Det. Bill Hodges (Brendan Gleeson), who retired after being unable to solve a massacre, when 16 people were killed by a Mercedes.
A fan of King's novel, which is the first of a crime noir trilogy following Det. Hodges, Treadaway tells Et ahead of the season one finale that the reality these fictional characters lived in was so relatable, but portraying Hartsfield proved to be a challenge. To internalize the character’s past tragedies and voyeuristic approach to killing, the actor cleared out his local bookstore of texts on psychopaths and serial killers, getting a few strange looks at the checkout counter.

If you haven't been watching the series adaptation of Stephen King's Mr. Mercedes, you've been missing out on one hell of a great show! This show has got a talented creative team behind it including writer and producer David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies, Boston Legal), director Jack Bender, along with series star Brendan Gleeson and the rest of the cast.
Season 1 of the series followed a demented killer named Brady Hartsfield (Harry Treadaway) "who taunts a retired police detective Bill Hodges (Gleeson) with a series of lurid letters and emails, forcing the ex-cop to undertake a private, and potentially felonious, crusade to bring the killer to justice before he is able to strike again."
I'm happy to report that the series has been picked up for a season and it will be based on the second book of King's Bill Hodges trilogy, which is called Finders Keepers. If everything goes as planned,...

I've got a crazy trailer for a new horror thriller called Halloween Pussy Trap Kill! Kill!. I don't know if you're familiar with the filmmaker Russ Meyer, from the 60s and 70s, but it totally seems like this is the kind of movie he would have made in the style of Saw. Meyer is behind such films as Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!, Common Law Cabin, Finders Keepers, Lovers Weepers!, Vixen, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, and more. They are all very grindhouse-style type movies.
Anyway, if you're familiar with his stuff, then Halloween Pussy Trap Kill! Kill! is a film you'll probably enjoy. Here's the synopsis:
On Halloween an all girl rock-n-roll band called “Kill Pussy Kill” ventures out to play their biggest show to date. However, before hitting the road they manage to unwittingly upset a man. Unfortunately, this man turns out to be an evil genius dead set on revenge.

The Manchester, UK, terror attack this past May eerily mirrored a similar event in Stephen King’s novel “Mr. Mercedes.” Producers behind Audience Network’s upcoming adaptation of the novel confirmed that they changed that central event for the series, in a way that won’t be revealed here.
At Tuesday’s Television Critics Association press tour panel for the series, director Jack Bender said that the show’s choice to change that framework was decided early on and was a “better way to make it a potentially more catastrophic event.”
On May 22, a young male suicide bomber walked into the foyer of the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester Arena and detonated a nail bomb that he had strapped to himself, killing 22 people (one child as young as 8 years old) and injuring 250. In the novel “Mr. Mercedes,” the killer Brady Hartsfield, who is being pursued by detective Bill Hodges, also...

Yet another Stephen King novel is set to get the TV treatment. While folks may be more dead set on seeing some of Stephen King’s older work — like It, The Dark Tower, Firestarter, or The Mist — on the big and small screen, we can’t forget that the dude’s been writing pretty great novels in recent years as well. Most recently, King’s put out a trilogy of hard-boiled detective novels. The stories started with Mr. Mercedes, continued with Finder Keepers, and concluded with End of Watch.
We’ve known for some time that the first book would be adapted for the small screen, but after being announced, back-burnered, and then brought back to the fold, it became easy to lose track over what the actual status of the project was. Now, Audience Network has announced that the 10-episode limited series has a premiere date of Wednesday, August...

Fans of Showtime’s Weeds series are in for a treat, because Mary-Louise Parker has joined the cast of Mr. Mercedes, the DirecTV series adaptation of Stephen King’s 2014 novel of the same name.
According to THR, Parker (R.I.P.D., Fried Green Tomatoes) will portray the recurring role of Janey Patterson, the younger sibling of the deceased Olivia Trelawney. Janey’s character plays a key role in helping an ex-detective Bill Hodges (Brendan Gleeson) track down a relentless, boastful killer (played by Harry Treadaway, who replaced Anton Yelchin in the role after the actor’s tragic death).
In addition to Parker, Gleeson, and Treadaway, the Mr. Mercedes cast also features Holland Taylor, Kelly Lynch, and Jharrel Jerome.
Adapted for the screen by David E. Kelley and directed by Jack Bender, the (planned ten-episode) Mr. Mercedes series is slated to premiere this autumn on DirecTV, DirecTV Now, and the At&T U-verse.

After actor Anton Yelchin passed away in June of last year, he left behind a substantial body of work as well as a handful of posthumous releases. He stars in two films that will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival — Cory Finley’s “Thoroughbred” and Mark Palansky’s “Rememory” — but he appears in another film to be released this April: “We Don’t Belong Here,” a family thriller about the dark secrets buried deep underneath dysfunction.

Editor’s Note: When New Orleans Saint defensive star Steve Gleason learned he had Als, his wife Michel was pregnant. Instinctively, he picked up a camera and started talking to his unborn son, and so began the documentation of a man’s determination to tackle his disease head-on.
“Gleason,” now an Oscar candidate for Best Documentary, quickly grew beyond being one man’s video diary. Under the guidance of director Clay Tweel, Gleason’s story was painted on a far broader canvas, one following a traditional hero’s journey that is able to capture the sadness, triumph, and joy of a family facing impossible odds. IndieWire recently asked Tweel about how he crafted the Gleasons’ inspiring story from 1300 hours of painfully intimate footage and how the project evolved as the NFL star’s body weakened.

Many are called, few are chosen: The number of high-quality, awards-worthy documentaries seems to grow every year, but there’s still only 15 slots on the Oscar documentary shortlist. That will be announced December 5; the final five will be revealed on nominations morning, January 24. This year, 145 features were submitted.
This is the white-knuckle portion of the final campaign stretch, as documentary filmmakers and distributors hope their movies make it onto documentary branch voters’ viewing piles before they file their final grades. Those with the advantage are high-profile established hits and festival award-winners with the right combination of engaging accessibility, artful filmmaking, and gravitas.
So what’s looking like a strong bet? It’s a diverse list in more ways than one. Here are my picks for the Top 15, which are not listed in order of likelihood.

Quick Marvel pop quiz! Off the top of your head, can you place each of the Infinity Stones within the Cinematic Universe right now? Perhaps we should back this up and start with the basics: Can you even explain what the Infinity Stones are?
Here's how the Collector (Benicio del Toro, in all his white-eyebrowed glory) summarized them in Guardians of the Galaxy: "Before creation itself, there were six singularities. Then the universe exploded into existence and the remnants of these systems were forged into concentrated ingots."

Clay Tweel has been involved in some of the most entertaining documentaries in recent years including his producing role in The King of Kong, right up through his directing turn on both Print the Legend and last year's brilliantly witty Finders Keepers. Tweel's latest documentary Gleason is a shift away from the light-hearted tone of those previous films and into much more somber and emotional territory. This change in no way makes the film less effective as the result is one of the most impactful and emotionally affecting documentaries in recent memory. The titular Steve Gleason is probably best known as a special teams player for NFL team the New Orleans Saints. Though not a star player, Gleason was responsible for a key punt-block that...

Our own senior film critic David Ehrlich has called “Heaven Knows What,” the breakout feature film by Josh and Benny Safdie, “fucking amazing.” This week, educational hub for independent film Le CiNéMa Club uploaded Benny Safdie’s thesis film from his time at Boston University called “The Acquaintances of a Lonely John.” In the 2008 short, you can see Sadie’s 16mm sense of grit and realism coming into form.

Though it was shot in the aughts, you could easily mistake the Safdie film for something out of the 80s. The color palette is washed out and the characters seem plucked from an obscure time and place. Otherwise, the film is as straightforward as the title: John (played by Safdie himself) is lonely, and wanders from place to place kicking rocks and holding doors open for strangers.

Everyone once and a while, a heartbreaking film comes along that is all the more searing when the truth is being handled. Gleason is a documentary that follows the real-life story of NFL defensive back Steve Gleason, who was diagnosed with Als at the age of 34. Directed by documentarian Clay Tweel (Finders Keepers), the first trailer shows the film’s mapping of Gleason’s life as he tries to adjust to life with the disease while being an expecting father.
While it sounds gut-wrenching, the tone of the trailer is more inspirational than somber, with Gleason stating that he plans to live each day to its fullest and grow with his child, leaving the “best of himself” behind for his wife and son. It seems to be a celebration of life, against the odds. See the trailer below for the Sundance documentary which arrives in July.

Another Stephen King adaptation is on the way, this time for the hardboiled detective thriller Mr. Mercedes, which pits a too-old-for-this detective against a maniacal killer who runs people over with a Mercedes (naturally). Originally announced last year, Mr. Mercedes has now been picked up by At&T’s Audience Network (home of boxing drama Kingdom) and has received a ten episode straight-to-series order.
The show has also netted its two leads, with Brendan Gleeson portraying Detective Bill Hodges and Anton Yelchin cast as the mentally deranged Brady Hartsfield. Hartsfield lures Hodges back into the game from retirement with a series of creepy letters and emails, leaving the hardened detective alone and without backup to solve the grisly murders and stop the Mercedes Killer before he strikes again.
Thankfully, there will be plenty of material for the show if it moves past the first season, since Mr. Mercedes is the beginning of a trilogy.

It may seem impossible, but not every Stephen King book has been turned into a TV show or movie yet. The latest project for the hyper-prolific author comes with Mr. Mercedes getting a 10-episode order from Audience Network. Mr. Mercedes is a 2014 novel from King which focuses on a killer who harasses a retired detective. The book went on to become a New York Times best seller and earned the 2015 Edgar Award for Best Novel. Mr. Mercedes is part of a book trilogy. The second of the three, Finders Keepers, came out in 2015. End of the Watch is slated to come out in June 2016. The series will feature Brendan Gleeson and Anton Yelchin, this according to THR.com. It will be headed up by David E. Kelley, the Emmy-winner and man behind such shows as Ally McBeal and Boston Legal. King’s adaptations for both the big screen and small...

At&T’s Audience Network has given David E. Kelley’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Mr. Mercedes a straight-to-series order, according to THR, and it has also been revealed that Anton Yelchin and Brendan Gleeson are set to star in the 10-episode series.
Yelchin (Green Room, 2011’s Fright Night) will play psychotic killer Brady Hartsfield, aka Mr. Mercedes, and Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow, 28 Days Later) will portray Detective Bill Hodges, a man who emerges from retirement to try and put an end to Hartsfield’s reign of terror by any means necessary.
DirecTV and At&T Uverse will debut the 10-episode series in 2018. Based on King’s 2014 novel, the show will be executive produced by David E. Rumors of a big screen adaptation of Stephen King's epic Dark Tower saga have circulated for years, with everyone from Javier Bardem to Russell Crowe attached to the ambitious project.

Amazon Scores Big at Sundance (Again) With Todd Solondz's 'Wiener-Dog' Deal Amazon Studios is putting the final touches on their incredibly successful run of Sundance Film Festival purchases by securing all U.S. rights to Clay Tweel's acclaimed documentary "Gleason." The company has bought all theatrical, On Demand and streaming rights and will partner with Open Road Films to co-release it in theaters this summer. Following up last year's absurdist documentary crowdpleaser "Finders Keepers," Tweel turns his lens to Steve Gleason, a former defensive back for the New Orleans Saints who was diagnosed with Als at age 34 and given only five years to live. Gleason became a local hero after he blocked a punt in the first Saints home game after Hurricane Katrina, and the doc uses his personal video journals to show just how inspirationally he lived following his diagnosis. The footage was shot over a four-year period.

Displaying a transparency that few filmmakers of his fame and / or caliber would even bother with, Steven Soderbergh has, for a couple of years, been keen on releasing lists of what he watched and read during the previous twelve months. If you’re at all interested in this sort of thing — and why not? what else are you even doing with your day? — the 2015 selection should be of strong interest, this being a time when he was fully enmeshed in the world of creating television.

Best known for his stumbling car salesman and poor choice of a husband in the Coen Bros’s Fargo, in his almost four decade career William H. Macy has seen his share of Park City red carpet treatment, including his directorial debut in 2014. While Rudderless might have been true to the film’s title, the filmmaker got right back into the saddle this past May for his sophomore project. What is being referred to as an American road trip sex comedy, despite some noteworthy comedic folk within this set of players (Alexandra Daddario, Kate Upton, Matt Barr, Matt L. Documentary cinema is in a golden age. While films and filmmakers seem to crop up out of the world of non-fiction cinema daily, and niches continue to become more and more esoteric, there is an increasing number of filmmakers pushing the boundaries of what the medium can offer viewers. Be it aesthetically or narratively, there are some films that have to truly be seen to be believed. Because only in documentary cinema can a film turn a story about an amputated foot into a powerful meditation on the modern American Dream.

In 2007, a North Carolina man named Shannon Whisnant bought the contents of an abandoned storage unit at auction. Inside the unit was a smoker. Inside the smoker, a mummified human foot. Ever watchful for an opportunity to gain fame and make a quick buck, Whisnant tried to parlay his find into a tourist attraction, charging three bucks for a peek at the leathery limb; he even had t-shirts and other merchandise made, dubbing himself “The Foot Man.” But go figure, the foot did indeed belong to someone: John Wood, who had lost it after a plane crash in 2004 that also took the life of his father. He had saved it because he wanted eventually to be buried with it, but he fell on hard times, struggled with addiction, lost his home, and, eventually, his storage unit. That's a pretty fascinating story right there, but in the documentary Finders Keepers, directors...

In 2007, Shannon Whisnant, a bargain hunter from small-town Maiden, North Carolina, picked up a BBQ smoker at auction. After taking it home, he opened the grill to find a macabre surprise in the form of a crudely mummified human foot. The discovery naturally raised a lot of questions: Whose foot was it? How did it end up inside the grill? And why in the world would anybody have their own amputated limb preserved for posterity?

Based on its premise, one might initially peg Finders Keepers as one of the strangest documentaries of the year, but it soon reveals itself to be one of the most emotional and uplifting. The story centers on John Wood, an amputee who is attempting to reclaim ownership of his mummified leg from Shannon Whisnant, who believes its his property and has dreams of being a reality TV star.
