Set in a world where every door creaks and there isn’t a single well-lit location, “Tarot” is little more than a clearinghouse of horror clichés.
Co-written, directed and executive produced by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (the podcast series “Classified”), the supernatural thriller repeatedly leverages the genre’s laziest mood-setting and suspense-building devices to keep its audience on the edge of their seats. But even featuring a moderately charming ensemble led by “Spider-Man: Homecoming” breakout Jacob Batalon, the film’s PG-13 rating — and lack of virtually any characters other than its doomed protagonists — severely limits the efficacy of those techniques and tropes even when they’re deployed skillfully.
Batalon plays Paxton, the wisecracker among a studiously diverse college-age friend group that rents a remote mansion to celebrate the birthday of Elise (Larsen Thompson). Scouring their rental for booze, the group foolishly breaks into a room marked “Keep Out,” where...

Actor David Dastmalchian, who was recently seen in the horror films The Boogeyman, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and Late Night with the Devil, has just launched a new talk show called Grave Conversations, with “first guest” honors going to actress Kate Siegel, whose credits include Hush, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Grave Conversations interviews are expected to last just six to eight minutes and can be viewed on the official Instagram page. What makes Grave Conversations stand out from other talk shows, other than having Dastmalchian as the host, is the fact that interviews are conducted while Dastmalchian and his guest are both lying in Titan caskets.
Dastmalchian told Forbes, “After playing a talk show host in my most recent film Late Night with the Devil, I felt myself longing to take the...

The upcoming film The Life of Chuck is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. Flanagan has let it be known that this isn’t horror, and cast member David Dastmalchian has said the same in a new interview with Gizmodo, describing the film and elements in it as beautiful and heartbreaking.
Dastmalchian, who was also in the recent King adaptation The Boogeyman, said (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “It’s beautiful. You think, ‘Oh, Mike Flanagan, Stephen King, this thing’s going to just be the most horrifying, terrifying, thing you’ve ever seen.’ [But] it is so beautifully rendered, heartfelt, the drama, the performances. The cast in this is deep.

Over the weekend, Universal Pictures released Dev Patel's action flick "Monkey Man" in theaters, while 20th Century Studios unleashed the horror prequel "The First Omen" on audiences. Both were competing against "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" in its second weekend and, frankly, they never stood a chance. But they also weren't necessarily gunning for the top spot as these were more counterprogramming moves from both studios. Be that as it may, both films came in on the lower end of expectations, which shaped the narrative around their performance to something akin to "bad." I'm here to offer the other perspective which is more akin to "good."
"Monkey Man" debuted at number two on the charts with a $10.1 million opening. The film, which serves as Patel's feature directorial debut, had been expected to pull in anywhere between $16 and $25 million on the more optimistic side of things That obviously didn't come to pass.

Image Nation Abu Dhabi and Spooky Pictures recently teamed up to produce the horror film Late Night With the Devil, headed up by the Australian writing and directing duo of Colin and Cameron Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres) and starring David Dastmalchian – whose previous credits include The Boogeyman, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and The Suicide Squad. The film was recently given a theatrical release and has racked up positive reviews from the likes of Stephen King and Kevin Smith, not to mention JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols (you can read his 9/10 review at This Link). It’s set to reach the Shudder streaming service on April 19th, and in anticipation of the streaming release the film has gotten a new, retro-style poster. David Dastmalchian reflects on his experiences working with Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
In a recent discourse with The Hollywood Reporter, David Dastmalchian, intertwined with Nolan and Villeneuve’s creative orbits, offered his musings. He recounted Villeneuve’s eager quest for Nolan‘s cinematic wisdom during their joint venture on “Prisoners,” reciprocated in kind when they converged again for “Oppenheimer.” Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve intersect in their dedication to classical filmmaking techniques and their prowess in bringing esteemed studio endeavors to fruition. Both auteurs bask in triumph, with Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” hailed at the Oscars and Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” reigning supreme at the box office.
While filming “Prisoners,” Villeneuve expressed his interest in hearing about Dastmalchian’s involvement in “The Dark Knight” and his collaboration with Christopher Nolan. A decade later, Dastmalchian reunited with Nolan on the set of “Oppenheimer,” where Nolan praised Denis Villeneuve’s work.

Richard Donner's "The Omen" is one of the most revered horror classics of all time. Now, Disney's 20th Century Studios is bridging the franchise back from the dead for a prequel in the form of "The First Omen." Horror has been on an incredible hot streak at the box office over the last couple of years, and Disney is the best in the business at milking franchises for all they're worth. So, will this R-rated franchise revival scare up enough to make it a hit when it opens next weekend?
Director Arkasha Stevenson's horror prequel is currently expected to pull in between $8 and $13 million on its opening weekend, per Box Office Pro. It will be opening directly against Dev Patel's action flick "Monkey Man," which has its sights set on a debut between $16 and $25 million. Both movies will also be contending with "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" on its second weekend,...

It isn’t every week that two of the biggest jobs in film are filled within a matter of days, but that was the case last week. On February 26, Disney’s live-action president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production Sean Bailey exited, making way for Searchlight’s David Greenbaum to take the top job. Two days later on Feb. 28, Rideback’s Dan Lin was tapped to take Scott Stuber’s open seat atop Netflix’s film division.
Greenbaum made his bones on prestige indie films and original, auteur-driven stories. He’s now taking the job at a company that has spent the last 15 years mining IP and playing the hits. Lin is a franchise builder now stepping into an environment known for chasing big prestige swings.
It appears Disney and Netflix are heading in opposite directions. One agent who spoke with IndieWire called it a role-reversal between Disney and Netflix; at one point,...

I would have expected the new indie anthology film Beware the Boogeyman to have come out a while back, closer to the release of the widely hyped Stephen King adaptation, The Boogeyman. In any case, it’s out now and wants you to believe in it.

Christopher Nolan’s deal with Universal for “Oppenheimer” included this: The studio, a leader in early release of films to home platforms, would need to make a very big exception.
At 122 days, “Oppenheimer” had the longest theatrical window of 2023. Compared to the year’s 84 other wide releases, it was more than triple the industry average of 37 days. Universal’s second-longest window belonged to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which was a bigger hit than Nolan’s film but lost theatrical exclusivity after 41 days.
Studios aren’t interested in specifics around theatrical windows — or, in offering PVOD data beyond top 10 lists that offer neither financial context nor independent verification. This is our attempt to provide a full-year view of theatrical windows, after prior surveys revealed a 30-day average for the first four months of 2023 and 40 days for early summer.

From American high school comedies to Oscar winners, plenty of 2023’s biggest and brightest films have skipped the DVD market in the UK.
(Correction: A previous version of this article claimed Nida Manzoor’s Polite Society couldn’t be found on DVD. It actually can. Don’t worry, we have fired the news-goblin responsible for the error.)
As recently as 2021, the idea that the previous year’s Best Picture Oscar winner wouldn’t get a UK physical media release would have been absurd.
In fact, to find a Best Picture winner that isn’t easily available on a UK disc format, you’d have to head all the way back to 1937. Try as we might to watch The Life Of Emile Zola on the secret DVD player at the top of Big Ben (don’t tell anyone), it looks like no one got round to burning it onto a disk...

Stephen King is inarguably one of the most adapted authors in the world. The reigning overlord of the horror genre has seen his work translated to film and TV almost continually since his first novel, Carrie, was adapted in 1976. While he’s had his ups and downs in terms of success in those venues, it’s almost a certainty that the King adaptations will continue as the author himself keeps working well into his sixth decade as a published writer.
Naturally, most of the adaptations of King’s work focus on his horror or horror-adjacent output: just about everything from 1,000-page behemoths like the post-apocalyptic The Stand to 10-page short stories like the single-setting monster tale “The Boogeyman” have found their way to the screen. But while filmmakers and creators gravitate toward the King material that they think will scare audiences – after all, that’s his brand – some of the...

Before Damien was born in Richard Donner’s infamous 1976 horror classic “The Omen,” a Vatican-adjacent conspiracy to bring the Devil to Earth made for a sinful demonic ploy.
“The Omen” prequel “The First Omen” is the latest installment in modern horror franchises and reboots, following the original film which chronicled an American ambassador (Gregory Peck) who adopts a son who turns out to be the antichrist. The film was remade in 2006 by then-20th Century Fox, and landed the short-lived 2016 sequel series, “Damien.” Now, 20th Century Studios’ “The First Omen” attempts to capture where all that satanic worship kicked off.
The film’s official synopsis reads: “When a young American woman (Nell Tiger Free) is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.

It's New Year's Eve, which means it's time for another one of the YouTuber Sleepy Skunk's Movie Trailer Mash-Ups. Since 2010, Sleepy Skunk has been delivering 6-and-a-half-minute remixes of nearly every trailer of a major movie to come out that year, and 2023 is no exception.
Once again, this year's trailer is divided into sections, each with a different tone to better capture the sheer variety of movies it has to work with. The first is fairly quiet and peaceful, reminding us of all those romantic, understated films like "Past Lives" or "Elemental." Then comes the spooky section, which reminds us of gems like "Skinamarink" and "The Boogeyman." The mash-up sensibly uses "M3GAN" to end its main horror section, as the evil robot doll's dance transitions perfectly to the trailer's comedy section. Then comes all the goofy, crass, and absurdly funny trailer moments we'd nearly forgotten.

While the industry as a whole felt more downs than ups this year, horror films continued to be a consistent attraction overall. While the studio hits were not quite as splashy as they were 2022, the year saw the birth of new franchises (M3GAN, The Pope’s Exorcist, Talk to Me, Thanksgiving), the revitalization of the reliable favorites (Evil Dead Rise, Insidious: The Red Door, The Nun II), and reminded us just how essential writers, actors, and the all the creatives both in front of the camera and behind it are to making any of this not only work, but sell.
As for the big horror trend this year, controversy was thy name. While there were a few entries critics and audiences were able to rally around, most of them drew conflicting opinions — which this list is surely proof of.
Skinamarink, The Outwaters, Cocaine Bear, Beau is Afraid, A Knock at the Cabin,...

Ethan Hunt is about to join the DC Universe (or what is left of it). Top Gun pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell could find himself flying wingman to Harry Potter. Get ready for Batman v Transformers! The jokes wrote themselves Wednesday evening as late holiday season news broke: Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav met with Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish earlier this week to discuss a potential merger of their respective media companies. Yet any attempt at humor is of the strictly gallows variety (particularly since it is difficult to imagine someone like Tom Cruise working for David Zaslav).
That’s because the idea of a Wbd and Paramount merger is bleak unless you own significant stock in either media company. After directing three “Night at the Museum” movies, Shawn Levy didn’t want to be confined to directing family comedies for the rest of his career. If you’re doing something successfully, he told IndieWire, it’s easy to be “pigeonholed” by Hollywood into that one thing.
But he’s been far from limited under the banner of his own production company, 21 Laps. Levy and his company have been prolific hit-makers since it launched in 2006, and he has produced and directed everything from indie darlings (“The Spectacular Now”), ambitious Best Picture nominees (“Arrival”), studio blockbuster satires (“Free Guy“), prestige limited series (“All the Light We Cannot See”), Stephen King horror movies (“The Boogeyman”), and the biggest Netflix show ever (“Stranger Things”), all of which depart from the family-friendly event movies on which he cut his teeth.
“You need to refuse to be limited by everyone else’s assumptions,” Levy told IndieWire during a recent interview.

For over 40 years, Stephen King has had his “Dollar Baby” program in place, allowing filmmakers to acquire the rights to turn any of his short stories into a movie for the cost of just $1. Unfortunately, the Dollar Baby program has now been disbanded, with its end confirmed on King’s official website: “The Dollar Baby Program was disbanded in December 2023. Contracts issued before December 2023 will be honored and will remain approved for one year from their instantiation, as per the terms of their contract. There will be no Dollar Baby extensions after December 1st, 2023.“
On his X account, King explained that the Dollar Baby program is no more because “Margaret, the Mistress of Dollar Babies, is retiring.“
Here’s how King described the Dollar Baby program in the 1996 introduction he wrote for the published screenplay for Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption, which was based on his novella Rita Hayworth...

Dust Bunny: David Dastmalchian joins Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver in Bryan Fuller horror film
Actor David Dastmalchian has an impressive list of credits that includes Late Night With the Devil, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Oppenheimer, The Boogeyman, Dune, The Suicide Squad, the Ant-Man films, Blade Runner 2049, The Belko Experiment, Prisoners, and The Dark Knight, among many others. Now Collider reports that Dastmalchian has joined the cast of Hannibal TV series creator Bryan Fuller’s family-oriented horror project Dust Bunny.
This project was announced last November, not long before we learned that Fuller is also working on a Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake for franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service. Dust Bunny went into production earlier this year, with Hannibal himself Mads Mikkelsen and Sigourney Weaver (Alien) in lead roles.

I.S.S. trailer ramps up the paranoia and tension in the isolation of space amid a global devastation
Space is a scary enough place. Imagine being in space and witnessing a devastation taking place on Earth. That’s the start of the premise of the new sci-fi thriller, I.S.S., from Bleecker Street. Bloody Disgusting has just unveiled the new trailer online. The titular initials stand for the International Space Station and is the prime setting for this film. The mood starts friendly enough and showcases the crew of both American and Russian missions living in the structure in perfect harmony. Unbeknownst to them, hell is about to break loose on the planet below. As both crew teams witness vast explosions taking place on the surface of Earth, confusion, sadness, desperation and anger overcome the crew, and as they each receive extreme orders from their governments, the peace within the station dissipates.
The synopsis reads,

During an interview last week, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) confirmed that his work on the film The Life of Chuck – the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – was complete. Flanagan has since taken to social media to confirm that filming has wrapped completely… and to let us know that The Life of Chuck is not a horror movie. Which makes sense, since we’ve previously heard that the movie will be similar in tone to the likes of Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile (and Hiddleston himself compared it to The Shawshank Redemption).

Chris Messina, who played sports agent David Falk in Ben Affleck’s Air, has joined the case of Juror No. 2, the legal thriller Clint Eastwood is directing for Warner Bros.
Shooting on the feature began in June and was halted due to the actors strike. Production is now resuming in Atlanta.
Nicholas Hoult is leading the courtroom with Toni Collette, Gabriel Basso, Zoey Deutch, Leslie Bibb and Kiefer Sutherland also on the witness stand.
Per the studio’s official logline, the script by Jonathan Abrams follows family man Justin Kemp (Hoult) who, while serving as a juror in a high-profile murder trial, finds himself struggling with a serious moral dilemma … one he could use to sway the jury verdict and potentially convict — or free — the wrong killer.
Messina will be playing the case’s public defender.

Mike Flanagan – who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – recently went into production on another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck… and now, during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, star Tom Hiddleston (Loki) has confirmed that his work on the film has been completed. While talking about the film, Hiddleston also compared it to one of the most popular King adaptations, The Shawshank Redemption!
Based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds, The Life of Chuck consists of three separate stories linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.
Hiddleston is playing Chuck, with Mark Hamill (Star Wars) playing a character named Albie.

We’ve all had imaginary friends, right? Well, probably not ones like Chauncey! Take a look at the Imaginary trailer here.
Jason Blum’s horror studio Blumhouse have been raking in the profits with Five Nights At Freddy’s, which has exceeded all expectations when it comes to dominating the box office. Horror has always been a particularly profitable genre and Blumhouse are now looking for an early 2024 hit with Imaginary.
Take a look at the first, spooky trailer below.
Starring Jurassic World: Dominion’s DeWanda Wise, Imaginary asks the terrifying question: are our imaginary friends just imaginary, or something a little more sinister? Maybe they murder people. Wouldn’t that be positively ghoulish?
Wise plays Jessica, who moves her family to her childhood home. Jessica’s stepdaughter Alice finds a talking teddy bear in the basement named Chauncey. Chauncey makes her do things, including showing a nail in her arm.

I found my way into the Halloween universe through an old VHS tape collecting dust on my father’s bookcase. He’d recorded Halloween II when it once played on HBO (back when the now-streaming giant was part of basic cable), and the crackle of static was part of its charm. I couldn’t tell you when I first saw Michael Myers slashing up Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, but I can guarantee where it was. Our living room carpet was a light tan, flecked with bits of beige, and our humongous wooden TV set, which sat squarely in the corner, gave me a front-row seat to so many terrible frights. I imagine myself transfixed to the screen, hypnotized by Dean Cundey’s cinematography and Rick Rosenthal’s expert direction. Michael Myers was and is The Boogeyman – he gave me more nightmares than I can count. But I loved being frightened, and...

David Dastmalchian, the actor known for spooky roles in films such as Dune and The Suicide Squad, has lined up a new gig that feels appropriate for Friday the 13th.
Dastmalchian is the new brand ambassador for Titan Casket, a company that sells caskets online and helps with end-of-life planning. As part of his duties, Dastmalchian will appear in marketing materials and be the face of the company.
For Dastmalchian, teaming with the company is personal, as in recent years he has lost family members and wishes he had been aware of end-of-life planning that can make those difficult times less painful.
“It’s an honor to represent Titan Casket, a brand that’s not only making end-of-life planning more accessible and affordable, but also initiating crucial conversations around it,” Dastmalchian said in a statement. “If I had known about Titan Casket and the right to buy my own casket,...

And one of my favorite things to do, when the ghosts and ghouls frequent your local Target aisle, is check out the local haunts. Here in Los Angeles, you have many horror events to choose from. The beauty of Halloween however, is that most cities and towns across America all have a few choice spots to get creeped out at. As a service to all our readers, please leave suggestions in the comment section below that may lead to haunting holiday discoveries for others
