Court room dramas are not exactly common in Korean cinema, but the genre does have a legacy, with films like “Unbowed” and “The Attorney”. “Juror 8” comes to continue in those footsteps, although in a completely different style, since the script is based on the first jury trial in Korea, thus focusing on them and not a lawyer or an accused, while the approach is more entertainment-oriented. Lastly, it is also worth noting that the protagonist, Park Hyung-sik, who is also a member of the boy group Ze:a, won a number of newcomer awards for his performance.
“Juror 8” is screening at the Florence Korea Film Fest
As the first Citizen Participation Trial is about to commence is South Korea, all the media’s attention is on the case, along with the jurors, the presiding judge Kim Joon-gyeom, and the accused, a man who is obviously of limited mental ability...

As a young girl, “The View” co-host and Emmy Award-winning legal journalist Sunny Hostin would use a hairbrush as a mic and mimic Barbara Walters and Diane Sawyer in the mirror. She didn’t have many broadcast idols she could emulate — in those times, there weren’t many women of color headlining news shows.
Now, with the launch of her latest venture, Roots & Wings Productions, Hostin will be able to spotlight characters neglected by Hollywood. The global, multi-platform media company will develop and create content for film and television, highlighting important social justice issues and meaningful, inclusive stories.
“I want to make sure that someone watches and knows that seeing an Afro Latina journalist on screen is a possibility,” Hostin told Variety.
In tandem with the company’s debut, Hostin has announced Roots & Wings’ first project: a drama series based on her new novel, “Summer on the Bluffs,” created in...

Man-seob (played by Song Kang-ho) belts out Cho Yong-pil’s Short Hair as if appearing on an episode of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke. Man-seob who is a Seoul taxi driver and widow living alone with his young daughter barely makes ends meet. He would not have to drive Hinzpeter (Thomas Kretschmann) to Gwangju if it weren’t for his back rent 100,000 won. “Let’s go Gwangju,” he says briskly to Hinzpeter, not knowing what awaits him.
The story resorts to Jürgen Hinzpeter’s witness to what he saw and what happened to him in May 1980. It is not detailed about the actual politics of the period and does not invoke the name, Chun Doo-hwan who imposed martial law and slaughtered Gwangju citizens. That is because it is not meant to inflame, but asks the audiences to empathize with Man-seob; we see Gwangju and its citizens at the time through his eyes.

“For the past decade, Next Entertainment World has continuously challenged itself whenever there was an opportunity,” said Kim Woo-taek, chairman of Next Entertainment World.
Indeed, New, celebrating its 10th anniversary at Busan, has come a long way in a short time, developing itself from a second mover in the industry into a total entertainment company, overcoming hurdles and implementing innovative decisions. Take, for example, the company’s beginnings. When Kim launched New in 2008 with only four employees, the Korean film industry had been dominated by long-established, vertically integrated big companies. Cj Entertainment had been the top Korean distributor since 2003, with Showbox the a runner-up. The Korean arms of Hollywood majors had boasted strong lineups. A fledging in such a saturated industry, New started its domestic distribution business with foreign titles including Catherine Hardwicke’s “Twilight.” In its second year, when it launched investment-distribution operations of Korean titles, it became one of the top five distributors.
