April is forced to reveal her hand, but keeps some cards in her back pocket.
Amari-Sali13 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This was a very curious episode because as much as April reveals things, it is only due to her being forced to. Even then she remains selective with what secrets she reveals, and for good reason. Though perhaps the most interesting part may have been Brenna's storyline with Greer, who was unnamed in my last episode review since I figured she wouldn't be relevant. If just because their interaction reveals a whole new level to Brenna. But, more on that below.

Topic 1: We're Friends Right? - Brenna & Beth

After seeing a psychic, April is lead to believe she needs to talk to her sisters. Though being that she only recognizes Brenna as her sister, she simply focuses on her. Which is a good idea since, post-biopsy, Brenna is there but a little distant. Especially since April faints at the kitchen counter and this freaks Brenna out. But even with her telling her fears, April thinks Brenna isn't opening up as she should. So, Beth volunteers to create a supporters of April group.

But before the first group meeting, Brenna confides in Kieran, who focuses more on who, or what, is to blame in society more than consoling Brenna. At least until Beth comes in and interrupts Kieran's nonsense with an invite to see Pretty in Pink at some outdoor venue. Which Kieran isn't strongly for, nor Brenna since she never saw the movie before. Leading to the interesting part which is Brenna's interactions with Greer. For while at school Brenna is sort of icy toward Greer, at the movies, despite Kieran's presence, you can see her and Greer sort of flirt. And when Beth and Brenna have a post-movie talk, without Kieran there, we learn Brenna may have feelings for Greer. Issue is though, with Greer being preppy, and Brenna not really looking to being labeled anything, she isn't fully comfortable with the idea of really interacting with Greer, whether as friends or something more. Even with it appearing Greer is more capable of making her happy than Kieran at the moment.

However, even with that said, after a big family blowup near the end of the episode, Brenna texts Greer to meet her, and Greer does. Then, for the second time in the day, Brenna talks about April's diagnosis and Greer does what Brenna needed Kieran to possibly do. Making me wonder what may happen between the two? A friendship only, or maybe something more?

Topic 2: Natalie Ortiz/ Family Drama – April and George

The existence of Natalie is a huge issue for April, and really if it wasn't for the aforementioned psychic the issue may have remain buried. But with the psychic visit, and Dominic confessing his mom is in jail, it leads to her not only talking about Natalie, but investigating her a bit. Which, of course, as April goes deeper into this mystery, it leads her to really become shaken by the fact her dad cheated on her mom and betrayed his family's trust. But, what makes the situation worse is that George knew.

Though he lets it be known he wanted his brother to reveal he had an affair but, as with April's diagnosis, he didn't feel it was his place to put someone else's information out there. And speaking of revealing April's diagnosis, as gone into in topic 3, him not telling Sara that April was sick becomes a major issue. An argument which reveals that it is Sara's fault George has become so alienated from the family. She kept him, it seems, from the family after her husband died, as well as made it so George couldn't go to his own brother's funeral. Making it seem that as much flack as George got from April in episode 1, truly her anger and admonishment should have been directed at her mother who likely was more thinking of her own feelings than her kids who obviously could have used their uncle.

Topic 3: You're Working Too Hard – April & Sara

As mentioned in topic 1, April faints and while this freaks out Brenna who knows why, it makes Sara highly suspicious since April tries to make it only appear she is working too hard. But with Sara worried, and her mom fully believing in snooping, Sara finds herself going through April's things in search of evidence. And, at first, all she finds is a copy of 50 Shades of Grey tucked in April's draw, but her search doesn't end there. She next checks under April's mattress, and this leads her to find April's unmarked cancer drugs in giant sandwich bag.

With this discovery comes the fear that April has turned herself onto drugs, and being that Sara is a therapist, she is reading all of April's signs. So she directly confronts her and the excuse used is that the drugs are a supplements. Something Sara doesn't believe so she ends up following April around, while planning an intervention as April seeks out the truth about Natalie. And while Sara just misses the opportunity to learn her husband had an affair, she does catch April leaving George's office after April and he talk about his knowledge of Natalie. With this, the former siblings-in-law lock eyes and Sara demands to know why April is talking to him. Something he can't legally reveal, nor really wants to.

So, as Brenna gets home with Beth, things get setup for an intervention and Beth is strangely sent packing. And while Beth tries to warn April, she doesn't check her phone. So upon returning home she is forced to reveal she has leukemia or prep for rehab. Leading to her revealing her diagnosis, and us seeing why she didn't want to say anything for Sara freaks out, upsets everyone, and to find peace April goes Dominic's, and Brenna to see Greer, leaving Sara prepping for her life's next big challenge.
