Treachery and Redemption
claudio_carvalho30 September 2017
Ragnar, King Horit and their men attack the monastery of Winchester and they plunder their treasure. Meanwhile Lagherta has problems with her marriage with Earl Sigvard and Bjorn hates his stepfather that is a brutal man. In Kattegat, Auslag delivers her third son and she calls him Sigurd. King Ecbert invites Ragnar to meet him. In Kattegat, Jarl Borg decides to invade the village and Rollo has an important participation defending the village, Auslag and her sons.

"Treachery" is another great episode of "Vikings". Jarl Borg makes a wrong move and he will certainly have of face Ragnar's wrath. Rollo shows his importance defending Kattegat and this redemption will certainly improve his relationship with his brother. My vote is eight.

Intense action sprinkled with great character moments make this episode the best yet.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode just narrowly edges out 'A King's Ransom' and 'Brother's War' to make for the best episode of the show I've yet seen. The action is extremely well-executed and just seems to get better and better with each episode. There are plenty of great character moments particularly with Athelstan, who finally becomes a character I somewhat care about in this episode. I'm loving King Ecbert so far. Rollo makes an attempt to redeem himself, and he's on the right path so far.

My only complaint would be that this episode is very reminiscent of 'A King's Ransom,' just executed slightly better.

8.5/10.

Emotional & Thrilling

Warning: Spoilers
"Treachery" is a standout episode for multiple characters in multiple locations. Athelstan is intriguingly faced with his past life and religion once again, Jarl Borg has a sympathetic and understandable motivation to strike out (and has an incredibly effective moment when having his second wedding - unable to have his new wife try the wine), King Ecbert is a refreshingly cool-mannered and thoughtful antagonist, Ragnar has a few moments to show his kinder side (hiding a child during the Winchester raid), an older Bjorn and Lagertha are in an interesting predicament that we want to see them break free of, and most importantly, Rollo is excellently forced into holding off Kattegat from Jarl Borg's forces. Considering I've had sympathy for Rollo for a while now, I'm all for him getting a chance to prove himself and I truly felt his pain when having to choose whether to stay and die or flee and protect the Ragnarssons. It's simply a strong conflict to throw both Borg and Rollo against each other - given they're both characters with understandable motivations (but I hope Rollo wins, obviously). Even Siggy gets a great moment where she shows her willingness to fight on the shores of Kattegat.

The only person I felt was unlikeable was Floki, who has his moments here and there across the show, but a lot of the time he is more of an annoying pest than actually enjoyable.

WARNING - SPOILERS :

------------------------- -------------------------

I have watched many shows so far, more than 100 and I have never hated any character more than Jarl Borg .....either the actor is very good or the character is simply that annoying. I was never this mad but let me tell you this.....when Jarl Borg decided to strike Ragnar's village just cuz his ego was hurt....and going against WOMEN,CHILDREN AND OLD MEN ONLY.....well,that made me despise this character the most in TV history.I might be blacklisted after this review for my language but he was a f**ing p*s*y for doing that. Yes,this review is simply just so I can express how much I hate the character Jarl Borg. Great episode overall and redeemed Rollo's character a little, even tho he is still a traitor in my eyes for killing his friends so easily.

Strong performance of Linus Roach as King Ecbert
universityofbenelux16 December 2023
I love the Viking series, but Michael Hirst didn't care about being historic accurate at all. The episode starts with King Ecbert speaking about his time when he lived at the court of Emperor Charlemagne.

He was with a Charlemagne's party at a harbor town in Southern Gaul. Gaul was the the region inhabited by the ancient Gauls, comprising modern-day France and parts of Belgium, western Germany, and northern Italy, Southern Gaul at a harbor town would be.

Narbonensis was Southern Gaulle, and that included Marseille. Maybe the were at harbor town at the river rhone so the Northmen could only have come through the medeterian sea. Before they even found Enland they sailed across the North Sea and the English Channel and sailing across the Atlantic ocean passing Gaul's Western coastline, passing through the strait of gibraltar entering the Medeterian sea.

The episode was entertaining.

Not historical...
elvenwarrior-6355021 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
There a numerous elements in this series that aren't historically accurate, which I think is sad since it's on the "History Channel." A little license of course is inevitable, especially to make it entertaining, but I was particularly irked when a Christian bishop threatens to crucify an apostate. I don't think there is historical record of Christians ever crucifying people, let alone other Christians. Not to mention Constantine banned crucifixion hundreds of years before. It's just lazy.

There's a fair bit of action in this episode, but it really feels like the story isn't moving forward very quickly. As interesting as some of the Viking characters are, and the battles being fun to watch, dwelling on them raiding, pillaging, and murdering and torturing Christians gets pretty old.

The Christian priest opting to join the Vikings, or even lapsing in his faith I can perhaps buy, but him killing a bishop? Even if out of "mercy?" It really feels like the writers don't understand the period, or Christianity in general.

Overall not a terrible episode, but the series doesn't feel like it's really going anywhere either...I'm not sure how they got to 5 seasons at this rate.
