Quotes

  • XO Mike Slattery : We haul ass from here, we can make it back for the Series.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : You don't really think the Cubs are still in it.

XO Mike Slattery : It's the weakest division in baseball. We were six games up when we left.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : Yeah, that was June. And they're the Cubs.

  • Dr. Rachel Scott : Seven months ago outside Cairo, there was an outbreak; a virus of unknown origin. Its genetic structure was like nothing any of us had ever seen. It swept throughout the village, killing everyone that it infected. Egyptian officials claimed that the outbreak was contained, but it wasn't. Instead, it continued to mutate and spread. The CDC and the WHO wanted to sample the virus from the victims to create a vaccine. But nothing worked. It was my belief that we needed to find the primordial strain here in the Arctic.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : The birds.

Dr. Rachel Scott : They're just the carriers. They pick up the virus from the melting permafrost. We finally found their feeding ground.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : So you have what you need to stop this thing?

Dr. Rachel Scott : I won't know until we get it back to the lab. We're running out of time. The virus back home is moving quicker than any of us could've imagined.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : How would you know that? We've been radio silent since we left Norfolk.

Dr. Rachel Scott : Because I have my own SAT phone.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : [outraged]  We were at EMCON so no one would know our position!

Dr. Rachel Scott : We were at EMCON to protect my mission. Not yours. Orders came from the White House.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : Well, you led the Russians right to us and endangered my entire crew.

Dr. Rachel Scott : It was imperative that I stay in contact with the labs back home to keep them informed of my progress. I don't think you understand what we're talking about here.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : Enlighten me.

Dr. Rachel Scott : When we left Norfolk, the virus was at phase two, limited to small clusters in Asia and Africa. We are now at phase six: global pandemic. 80% of the world's population is infected. The world is sick, Captain Chandler. Very sick.

  • CO CDR Tom Chandler : Mike, we're not going home.

XO Mike Slattery : What are you talking about?

CO CDR Tom Chandler : The lab's two hundred miles inland. You saw the news footage.

XO Mike Slattery : We'll fight our way in there if we have to.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : And then what? Generators run out in a couple weeks, maybe the civilian population tries to overrun it. There's too many variables.

XO Mike Slattery : So what do we do? We stay on the ship?

CO CDR Tom Chandler : Dr. Scott says she has what she needs right here.

XO Mike Slattery : [scoffs]  Dr. Scott. We have standing orders from the president of the United States.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : From five days ago. In the absence of a command structure, I decide what's in the best interest of our mission.

XO Mike Slattery : And we have enough food here to last us, what, a week? How much fuel?

CO CDR Tom Chandler : We'll find what we need.

XO Mike Slattery : We'll die out there.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : No. We will not.

XO Mike Slattery : Tom, I appreciate what you're trying to do, but it's not gonna work. People want to get home.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : And who exactly gets to go home when we have 80 biohazard suits for 216 people?

XO Mike Slattery : We draw lots.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : I can't think like that, Mike.

XO Mike Slattery : It'll at least give people a chance to get back to their families, to say goodbye.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : I'm not letting anybody on this ship give up.

XO Mike Slattery : That's not your call. You don't get to play god.

CO CDR Tom Chandler : I'm still the captain of this ship. Now, I've laid out our mission. I expect you to fall in line.

  • CO CDR Tom Chandler : This is the captain speaking. We have no contact with home, and I have good reason to believe that the American government is no longer functioning. The country we all hoped we were coming back to no longer exists. We left these shores four months ago as members of the United States Navy. But now we are more than that. Now our duty is to the entire world. On board this ship is the hope... for our futures, for our families, and for all of humanity, because in that lab in our helo bay are the ingredients for a cure. And this is the safest place on Earth for our scientists to do their work, on a $3 billion piece of machinery protected by 216 sailors in the U.S. Navy. Our mission now is simple. We do whatever it takes to stay alive at sea until they find that cure. There's an unmanned food and fuel station outside Guantanamo Bay. For the moment, that is our destination. We've lost so much already. But this is the most courageous and resilient crew with whom I have ever been privileged to serve. We will come through this together, and we will prevail.

  • CO CDR Tom Chandler : In the absence of the command structure I decide what's best for the mission.
