Itachi's Farewell
tomasmmc-7719813 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode contains two parts, one dedicated to the battle of the Kages against Madara, and the other with Itachi's departure. First, the Kages continue fighting against the Madara clones with Susanoo, but they are in disadvantage. Tsunade is not sure with her style of fight, while the Raikage gets distracted and falls in Madara's genjutsu. But right in time, Onoki saves him and encourages the other Kages to keep fighting, they most honor their title and the promise they made to Naruto. Madara realizes that the Tsuchikage is the real problem given his experience and how he brings back the others. He intends to break his spirit. Still, Tsunade heals Onoki, and they prepare a combined attack: the Tsuchikage uses a big Jinton to eliminate all the clones in one shot, and at the same time, Mei and A use electrified water to reach the real Madara, while Gaara traps him with sand surrounded by seals. This works as all the clones disappear, and though Madara is caught inside the sand, he resurges by releasing his full power Susanoo, bigger than ever. He recognizes they are worth their title as Kage. After showing the complete Susanoo, he unleashes its power and destroys a mountain, and sends them away. Tsunade is stunned to realize that her grandfather fought against this, so Madara says that Hashirama is the only one who can stop him, but he is dead. Then, he promises not to change much the landscape. Still, Onoki reassures their will to battle, they lost their path but now they found the right one. The fight was impressive, great animation, and the strategy was well written. Of course, it's a little annoying how Madara keeps powering up and treats this battle as simple entertainment. Looks like there's no limit to his powers.

Then, comes the big deal of the episode. Itachi learns all the hand signs to undo the Edo Tensei, and starts ordering the sleeping Kabuto to perform them. Aware that this is the end, Sasuke realizes that no matter what he says, his brother won't change his mind about Konoha. He tells that he followed him to verify if what Tobi and Danzo said was true, but he also realized something else. During their time together, Sasuke remembers the time when he was little, how he adored and cherished his older brother. And now, as the more he gets to see, and share with him, understanding him, the hatred to Konoha grows more and more, for what they did to him. Sasuke knows what Itachi would want him to do, and that he disapproves him. But also because he is his little brother, he won't stop no matter what he says. If Itachi wants to protect Konoha, Sasuke wants to destroy it. Itachi then finishes the technique, and the Release of Edo Tensei begins. He and all the revived shinobis, Chiyo, Kimimaro, Deidara, Pakura, the jinchurikis, Dan, the sealed ones, get illuminated. Even Madara is reached, who was about to eliminate the Kages, so realizes something happened to the one who cast the Edo Tensei. As he slowly starts to fade away, Itachi approaches Sasuke, and shows him the truth of that fateful night: Shisui told him that a civil war was inminent, and so other nations would attack them. Danzo took his right eye, even though he wanted to use the Kotoamatsukami to stop the coup d'etat. He didn't trust him, and chose to protect Konoha by himself. Shisui entrusted Itachi his left eye, and the will to protect Konoha and the Uchiha name. Then, Itachi met Hiruzen, Koharu, Homura and Danzo. Koharu simply blasted the Uchihas for trying to create a revolution, so Hiruzen had to calm her down. Danzo was adamant, the Uchihas wouldn't stop, so they should act before them, and attack. Hiruzen wanted to talk instead, a war with the clan wouldn't be easy, and asked Itachi for more time to devise a strategy. But then, in private, Danzo told Itachi that if time demanded, Hiruzen would take full measures. Once the Uchihas start the coup d'etat, Konoha would have to eliminate them. Danzo encharged Itachi the mission, to end this before Sasuke finds out, that way he can be protected and saved from the massacre. He told him that the other option was to join his clan, and die with them. Danzo said that as a double agent, he was the only one who could stop the coup d'etat before it happened. He asked him to save his brother and protect the village. And so Itachi made his decision. Later, he located Tobi, and revealed that he knew that he broke into the Uchiha sanctuary. He has been watching him, so Tobi admitted to hold anger against the clan and Konoha. Itachi allowed him to have his vengeance, but in exchange to not touch Konoha, and Sasuke. The fateful night, Itachi saw his brother entering the clan's neighborhood, and regretted not telling him everything sooner. And at last, is showed the moment before killing his parents. Fugaku and Mikoto knew his decision. He asked him to take care of Sasuke. As Itachi cried, wielding his sword, his father said his last words "Don't hesitate. It's the path you chose. Our pain will only last an instant, unlike yours... The way de think is different, but I'm still proud of you. You are really gentle." Then, Itachi gives his last words to Sasuke: he always wanted to keep him away from everything, asking to forgive him while using his hands. But now he thinks that maybe Sasuke could have changed their father, mother, the Uchihas, if he had faced him from the beginning, and told him the truth. Now it's late and no matter what he thinks, it won't be enough. "You don't have to forgive me. No matter what you decide to do from now on... I will love you forever". That way, Itachi Uchiha from Konoha departs. Tearful, emotive, touching, brilliant. Anyone should think that if this doesn't change Sasuke, nothing will.

It's all said. Was great to finally see the remaining pieces of the story. If something was missing, was the moment when Itachi killed his parents. Here was shown how broken, sad, he felt. And his father Fugaku felt no anger or angst, he was aware of Itachi's suffering. Despite their differences, he was proud of his son. Can be implied that his mother Mikoto loved him as well despite all. She surely felt the discrimination of the village, and saw how times changed since Kushina died. I guess that's why she supported her husband. Still, they realized that Itachi prioritized the greater good over the clan, and had to accept it. As said, they knew his pain would be bigger and longer than theirs. Then, Itachi had the regret of not telling Sasuke everything before the fateful night. This means that he wanted to avoid what happened, he didn't want to fuel his hatred. He did it because when the moment came, he thought he had no other choice. If the little Sasuke could have changed their parents mind, and the clan, that's something only Fugaku and Mikoto know. With this, Kishimoto tries to tell that things could have been different if the little Sasuke had known the truth. Shisui's decision is not easy to understand. With the Kotoamatsukami, he could have saved the Uchihas? Because even if he used it on Fugaku, the problem would have not disappeared, and neither the growing discord between the clan and the rest of Konoha. Shisui could not change everyone's minds. By the way, Danzo and Koharu surely were the worst persons in that council. They were willing to exterminate an entire clan, instead of looking for other way. They indirectly contributed to the Uchihas discontent. With all this, the complete truth revealed to Sasuke, Itachi's words mean everything. No matter if he intents to destroy Konoha, if he dies, or whatever he does, his brother will always love him. The final gesture of finally giving him a hug instead of poking his head (though was a way to show cherish as well), was amazing. Itachi Uchiha from Konoha had the best possible farewell.
