Excellent and heartbreaking

Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers! For me this was probably the finest episode yet, closely surpassing Le Grand Guignol. Both episodes revealed of the history of the original siblings as children and allowed the viewer to more fully understand how they became so dysfunctional. The siblings roles and motivations were cemented as children by the brutality of Mikael and its resulting family dynamic. My heart broke for Klaus who was horribly abused as a boy. This does not excuse his dreadful acts but does let us understand how he became the monster he is. Rebekah stated it clearly; they are the strongest creatures yet damaged beyond repair. I am sad to see Rebekah depart the show and hope that we will be seeing her in a guest appearance.

powerful performance by Claire Holt

Farewell to Rebekah... No, I cannot believe that. Surely not? Gonna pop up in some future episode, certainly. But it does seem that Claire Holt was, uhm, fickle. I mean, there was that short-lived stint on PRETTY LITTLE LIARS. Most conspicuously, she was the one who backed out of H2O JUST ADD WATER. Be that as it may, it seems as if Claire told the scriptwriters to pull out all the stops. "Gimme something I can sink my teeth into!" And this was it. She is the star of this episode, playing a wide range of emotions. In my own opinion, the events here are anti-climactic after the previous episode's cliffhanger. It all dulls down... then sparks up again... but nothing like what was expected for this confrontation. I dropped this note, however, to praise Claire. And this is really praiseworthy. I liked the ending. Blonde driving sports car. Never fails to remind me of Tara Reid in BOOGIE NIGHTS.

And so she rides off...

Rebekah and Klaus

Warning: Spoilers
So many emotions and storylines intertwined in this episode.

Rebekah is protected by Elijah from Klaus at the cemetery. Elijah tells Klaus that Rebekah actually wanted to kill their father for him because Klaus was suffering too much. Rebekah tells Klaus with Elijah standing by to protect her that she only called on Mikael because he made her life so unhappy - he kills all her romantic partners.

Finally in the end Klaus lets Rebekah off with tears in his eyes telling her she is free to go but she is not allowed in New Orleans.

Klaus goes to the Quarter where Marcel waits for him with other vampires. Marcel dares Klaus to kill him and he will forever be the lone king. Elijah comes in and announces they are taking back this home that was once theirs and that is all. Elijah tells Marcel he is exiled. Marcel and Rebekah talk over the gravesite of her mother. Marcel knows he cannot leave this city. Rebekah knows Marcel loves this city more than he loves her. She drives off alone smiling out of New Orleans.
