Give me control of a nations money supply, and I care not who makes it's laws
CowherPowerForever20 November 2014
Free Fall is a low budget direct to home video film that never really gets anything done. The story is there, but you can basically tell where it is going early on. While this is usually not a bad thing for these types of films, nothing exciting ever happens to keep our attention. The following is my review of Free Fall.

The film was written by Dwayne Alexander Smith. Smith is a relative unknown, which doesn't really hurt a film like this since the plots are usually paper thin to being with. The story follows Jane Porter(Sarah Butler) as she goes into work one day to find that her co-worker killed himself by jumping off the roof of the building. As Jane is cleaning out his work space, she finds a flash drive that has evidence that her company is taking part in criminal activity. When Jane tells one of her bosses what she found, the muscle comes in to knock off another employee to keep this quiet. Jane eventually gets caught in the elevator and the rest of the plot unfolds, or lack thereof. As I said above, the plot is paper thin, and sadly there is little to keep you interest for eighty five minutes. While I expected a bland script for one of these direct to home video films, this one just didn't keep my attention all that well.

The film was directed by Malek Akkad, who is well known for being the big name Producer of the Halloween series, having taken over that spot from his late father. Akkad is not known for directing film, as this is his first major outing as a director. If you can even call this a major outing. There is not much action until very late in the film, and even then the action is very light. The film overall though it shot amazingly, and you never really get the sense that this is a direct to home video film, that is until towards the end of the film there is a cheesy CG shot that looks awful.

The acting is fairly good, which surprised me. The film is lead by star Sarah Butler(I Spit on Your Grave) and secondary actors like Ian Gomez, D.B. Sweeney, and acting legend Malcolm McDowell. With names like this, you cannot go wrong in terms of acting. I've never payed attention to the career of Sarah Butler before this film, but she doesn't do a bad job in this film. D.B. Sweeney is one of my favorite actors, and he plays a fantastic bad guy, even though his character is not all that well written. Malcolm McDowell can play any character in any film and totally pull it off without any problems, and that is the case once again in this film.

Malek Akkad has a fairly good outing at his first attempt at directing a fairly bigger film. Sadly, the script wasn't anything special to keep our interest.

Timothy Andrew Edwards is the composer of this film, and most of his experience has been composing television material. While this is not exactly an award winning score in any way, I must say I did enjoy what Edwards did with this film. The score is fairly cheesy, but that works in a film like this. Overall, Edwards doesn't offer up anything amazing, but his effort is good enough for a film like this.

In closing, this film is a below average direct to home video film. The story itself is hurt by the uninteresting story later in the film, and also lack of action. The acting is really one of the few bright spots of this film, so if you are a big fan of smaller films like this, mixed with some good acting, this is a film you probably will want to check out. Most however will likely just want to skip this film.

It's one saving grace is D.B. Sweeney!
Hellmant19 February 2015
'FREE FALL': Two Stars (Out of Five)

Low-budget B action flick about the career driven employee of a corrupt L.A. business, who uncovers incriminating company secrets and is hunted by an assassin; in order to silence her. The chase becomes more interesting when she becomes trapped in a company elevator. The film stars Sarah Butler (of 'I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE' fame), D.B. Sweeney, Ian Gomez and Malcolm McDowell. It was directed by veteran horror movie producer, turned first time feature film director, Malek Akkad and written by Dwayne Alexander Smith. I found the silly thriller to be slightly entertaining but mostly dull and forgettable.

Butler plays Jane Porter, an ambitious young employee of Gault Enterprises. Her boyfriend, Ray (Jayson Blair), wants her to spend less time at work and more time with him; but Jane is obsessed with her job. Her world is thrown upside down when a beloved coworker shows up dead, from an apparent suicide. Jane finds a thumb drive containing secret information about her boss, CEO Thaddeus Gault (McDowell), that most likely got her coworker killed. When another employee, Jane's supervisor Ronald Taft (Gomez), learns of her discovery, he calls in the company's hit-man, Frank (Sweeney), to clean up the mess. Things come to a standstill when Jane gets stuck on an elevator and Frank can't reach her.

The movie is pretty cheesy and filled with laughable suspense and bad acting. It's one saving grace is D.B. Sweeney; he's a delight to watch and he seems to be having a lot of fun playing this psycho killer. McDowell and Gomez are both good too but they're parts are too small. Butler is neither believable or likable, in her role. Most of all the film is just boring and uneventful; it completely lacks any originality or cleverness, at all. It's completely a waste of time; except for when Sweeney is on screen, of course.

Ho hum
haphazard7214 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Ho hum. Predictable. Boring.

Could have been so much more.

Not an original story by any means. Employee discovers fraud going on, someone is sent to "clean" the mess up. Things don't go according to plan. Standoff takes place till only one person is left.

The only difference is this one takes place on an elevator.

Sarah is the highlight (not just her gorgeous good looks!) of the movie and plays her part well. Man will remember Her from I Spit on Your Grave. (Now that's a tough movie to watch with Sarah exacting some pretty full on revenge on those who cross her!)

I wouldn't really recommend this movie unless absolutely nothing else was on or available.

Terrible acting with an even worse plot
alan-micron11 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I'll begin with a couple of positives for this film, and there aren't many. Firstly it is shot quite nicely its a nice film to watch and the soundtrack and editing is also pretty well done. That's it though.

At the beginning we see Jane (played by Sarah Butler) sparring with her partner in her house, doing a few punches and knees to a pad he is holding. I mention this because later in the film this is very important when dealing with assassins.

The entire first half of the film is set in Jane's office where she sits at a computer screen (touch screen may I add to make it look even cooler) pretty much the entire time where she discovers some fraudulent activity has taken place within the company she works for. Alarmed by this she spends even more time at her computer to make sure what she has discovered checks out.

She then informs her co-worker Ronald (played by Ian Gomez) about this discovery, who informs her they should take it higher to report it. However, in true plot twisting style, Ronald is in on this whole shenanigans and instead of reporting it, he calls in "the muscle", namely FRANK (D.B. Sweeney) to sort out this mess and shut her up.

Now FRANK being an assassin, is having an off day, not only does he let a woman beat him up so she can escape, he also misses her from about 10 yards with a gun containing seemingly infinite ammunition. Jane then gets in the elevator where she stays for the entirety of the second half of the film. The lift is disabled because Ronald presses one wrong button so Jane is trapped in there. Things turn worse for FRANK as he realises he cant get to her, so he kills the security guard and smashes Ronald's head in with a bar because he's being annoying. After another session of shooting at Jane in the elevator with another 15 bullets, FRANK misses with 14 of them, yes that's right, he still cant hit Jane even putting his gun in the elevator where she runs from side to side. He finally manages to hit her with one bullet, however this doesn't kill Jane, it merely grazes her and at the end of the film gives her magical powers. FRANK is now in serious trouble because his gun which contains about 50 rounds of ammo has finally ran out.

He realises he needs to call in the elevator expert to open the lift and get Jane out. The elevator guy arrives, FRANK lies to him saying Jane is saying crazy things because being locked in the elevator has made her go mad. The elevator guys believes FRANK and starts to get her out, he then sees an empty bullet shell on the top of the elevator and realises FRANK really is a naughty man. He tries to escape but FRANK having that assassin intuition realises he's on to him, FRANK then beats him to the ground and pulls out a knife, at this point you think its game over for the elevator guy but for some reason FRANK decides to stick the knife into the top of elevator guys shoulder that merely grazes him. Another fail for FRANK.

Finally the movie comes to that classic end battle between good and evil. Jane v FRANK on top of the elevator, where else. This is where the first scene I mentioned becomes really important. Frank the Assassin v Jane the slim beautiful office worker. No content right? right? WRONG.

In a amazing turn of events, Jane suddenly becomes MMA's Ronda Rousey, pummelling FRANK with punches, kicks, knees, at one point she even climbs the elevator pulley and does a spinning roundhouse to finally knock him off the top of the lift to fall to his imminent death. It is tense, you really do not know who will win the fight, but eventually after gasping for air it is Jane MMA champion who comes out on top.

A fitting end to a truly appalling movie.

Malcolm McDowell plays Thaddeus Gault, the owner of the company and the man behind the whole fraud thing and there's a half hearted sub plot going on between Jane's partner and her co-worker over a meal in a restaurant.

Terrible

wooden acting
pastoraj7729 December 2014
Both the writing and the acting are poor. It moves too slowly. Watch "Not Safe for Work" instead.Though the cast contains some medium-sized actors (McDowell, Sweeney), the writing is likely weighing down the project. The elevator angle slowed down the movie in my opinion. A chase through the building would have kept the tension high as it does in Not Safe. The female protagonist does not convince that there is an impending doom, and the antagonist seems to fumble and bumble more than the money one assumes was spent on his services would imply. I honestly had to take a break from watching half-way through due to lack of interest.

stuck in an elevator
SnoopyStyle31 July 2017
Jane Porter (Sarah Butler) works at Gault Capital. She's shocked when her supervisor Ronald Taft (Ian Gomez) tells her about a co-worker's apparent suicide jump off the building. Thaddeus Gault (Malcolm McDowell) offers her the job to replace him. She uncovers wrongdoing and tells Ronald. Ronald calls in Frank (D.B. Sweeney) to clean up the situation. Jane gets trapped in the elevator.

The writing is rather simplistic. Once she gets stuck in the elevator, the movie also gets a bit stuck. It's a hard premise to work and there is no imagination behind this to get it working. The outside story has no effect. At one point, Jane yells at Frank to "Do Something". I know the feeling. This is confined space thriller without any skills or originality.

This thriller needs a budget boost
clarkmick3322 May 2015
Watching a straight to DVD movie is always interesting experience - you never hear about these movies so you don't know what to expect. Some low budget movies can pull off great things with the story despite the limited budget. But this movie needs that budget ......badly.

This thriller premise started out quite interesting with a case of suicide in the corporate environment of finance. There was a whole office of people - "This could get interesting" I thought thinking it may become a great "whodunit" type. However this concept was quickly shot down by everyone leaving the office and the whole direction of the movie becoming quite apparent which totally deflated the thrill and left this movie as a low budget action flick.

Typical bad guy comes along, chases woman throughout office, despite being a professional he has really bad aim when it counts, he likes to walk when chasing people. He then threatens people with his goofy stare and cheesy dialogue.

The woman then makes it to the lift and then over half the movie is based around the lift. The movie should have been more accurately called "Stuck in the Lift"

The final show down between the woman and the guy is laughable - the conclusion of which only then does the movie title Free fall really mean anything.

Nice to watch if you are looking for something to accompany that pizza and beer............and oh so much more beer.

worse than expected

let me keep this short by starting with a zero because giving this even 1 vote is too kind. yes, it is that awful and if you think for a second "well sure it's probably not very good but lets see some action or skin or whatever" stop right there, you won't even get that. really sloppy editing on the last fight scene, if you can call it that, just a bunch of mean mugging and crappy camera cuts and no actual fighting, lol. repeat... let me keep this short by starting with a zero because giving this even 1 vote is too kind. yes, it is that awful and if you think for a second "well sure it's probably not very good but lets see some action or skin or whatever" stop right there, you won't even get that. really sloppy editing on the last fight scene, if you can call it that, just a bunch of mean mugging and crappy camera cuts and no actual fighting, lol.

Boring but still watchable!
RodrigAndrisan22 August 2017
All the action takes place in a big building and, in particular, inside an elevator and on the roof of that elevator. What it makes it watchable is the lead lady, Sarah Butler, good actress and very charming woman. I wanted to watch the movie because of Malcolm McDowell but, he has just a small role, nothing spectacular like in the old days, "A Clockwork Orange" or "Caligula". He has an acting destiny very similar to Eric Roberts, they both act in everything, only to play and make some money. But Eric Roberts is far too far with 472 credits, while Malcolm has only 258. However, both have specialized in the same character, the wicked, smart and charming villain. The other actors are OK but, still static boring movie.

Surprisingly Fun and Entertaining. Sarah Butler Did a Good Job.
chrismackey197225 December 2014
I'm not really sure why the other reviewers (2 at the time of this writing) have given this movie lackluster reviews. I liked the movie. I remember seeing Sarah Butler in "I Spit on Your Graves," and she was fabulous in that. I've seen her in a few other things, mostly guest spots, but she is someone who should be a star. She is a really good actress. She was convincing in this movie as well.

D.B. Sweeney was good in his role, but his role was not written very good. Instead of being someone who is feared, he's the kind of bad guy who's more comical, though it's not intended. He apparently has a magazine clip in his gun that carries more bullets than any that are actually on the market, because it never seems to run out of ammo. Also, when shooting at the girl, he was more likely to hit her if she ran than if she stood in one place. Yes, he could have spent a little time at the gun range learning how to shoot. He had a disagreement with one of his colleagues, so BAM - a wrench to the old thinker solves the problem. He behaved more like a part-time thug than like the chief muscle the founder of a multi-billion dollar company would hire.

Malcolm McDowell should have been used more. Possibly, he was too much money. The film cost $1.5 million. By the look of the movie, I thought they spent more than that. McDowell, Butler, and Sweeney are not nobody's. They're not superstars either, but still.

I gave the movie a 6-star rating, because I thought it was fun and entertaining, which is really all I look for, especially for a movie like this. It could easily have been made for television. However, Sarah Butler gave a realistic performance, and I thought this movie, based on the other two reviews, was going to suck. It did not.

More like Stuck
kosmasp23 June 2015
A free fall can be fun ... for a second or two (depending on the fall). This doesn't really have that impact though (sorry for the puns, but they are laying right there for the picking ...). If the movie just had a couple of jokes like that, it might be a bit lighter. Not to mention the cliché excuse of a story.

DB Sweeney and in part Sarah Butler do hold their own weight though. But being stuck (literally and metaphorically) does not help most of the time. You also wonder, if it's that important, why not put real effort behind it? But that would have ended the movie prematurely of course. There's not really much in here that will surprise you ... it might feel a bit "nicer" to some than to others of course

Worth a watch thriller
paul-ayres-607841 September 2018
The story is nothing new and some of the acting was a bit wooden. However, I thought Sarah Butler (I spit on your Grave) saved the film as the lead character trapped in the lift. Her feisty performance as Jane Porter gave the movie something extra. There are some thrilling moments and the pace is just about fast enough to keep the audience's attention.

A fun little thriller.
RoboRabbit8913 October 2017
What a fun little thriller of a film this is,

I have to admitted I'm growing into a bit of a fan for Sarah Butler.

I first seen her in this film first, then The Demented,

before I seen I Spit on Your Grave, so I liked it a lot. I didn't much like The Demented, I Spit on Your Grave was alright, but had a satisfying yet eerie ending.

I don't understand why most of you out there hated this, even when I first seen this I thought was average at best, but still enjoyed it for what it is.

Sarah Butler was great in this and I think she is a good actress too, I think she's sexy as hell and I hope she has a bright future, I also hope to see her in bigger film projects as well.

Overall, I thought it was fun and exceeded may expectations.

I give it a 5.8/10. If your like me and not too cynical about low budget movies I think your going to enjoy it too.

Barely watchable action movie with a leading lady
srdjan_veljkovic13 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Most of this movie is just barely OK. A few things are not OK, and a few are better than OK.

The worst problem is the pacing. An action movie needs more action and suspense, less buildup. The story is not so good either, but, most action movies don't have stories that are very good.

The best aspect is the leading lady. She's in great shape and looks very much the part. In the fight scene, she's much more believable than most actresses including Jennifer Garner, whom she somewhat resembles (similar height, hair styles, both in great shape), though Butler is not as cute as Garner can be. Unfortunately, they kind of ran out of ideas, and the end of the ultimate fight ruins it.

In general movie looks pretty good, but the acting is sub-par. Malcolm McDowell has a nice small supporting role, but, it's nowhere near as good or interesting or fun (although rather similar) as his great cameo in "In Good Company".

Essentially, it's watchable, but, just barely. There are other better action movies with a kick-ass leading lady that looks good doing it (rather than silly like Charlize Theron or Brie Larson).

THE PROBLEM HAS SPREAD
nogodnomasters19 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Let me clear some things up. If there is a killer in a film and Eric Roberts is in it, it is not a mystery who the killer could be. If there is a bad guy and Malcolm McDowell is it.... Type casting has ruined many films. The film opens with Jane Porter (Sarah Butler) practicing kick boxing with her boyfriend (Jayson Blair). He doesn't like her billionaire boss Thaddeus Gault because he is played by McDowell. Jane goes to work and discovers that VP Michael Willbourne jumped off the roof. His office was quickly cleared out and 9 minutes into the film as Gault is making a speech, I had the whole film figured out, and most of you will too.

What can I say. You know that kick boxing thing works it way back into the script and if you read the title and look at the box you know this is about our heroine being cornered in an elevator. Not many characters and the ones they had were not overly entertaining. I personally liked Stig Svendsen 2011 "Elevator" more.

Guide: No sex or nudity. No swearing that I recall.

Dramatic story about corporate embezzlement.
alanrandall-3729215 March 2022
Suspenseful thriller about corporate embezzlement with good acting performances from lead actress Sarah Butler and D. B. Sweeney.

I'm surprised that it has such a low rating from other reviewers, as I quite enjoyed this movie, but I guess it comes down to personal preferences and what appeals to one person does not necessarily appeal to another.

no-brainer action thriller
trashgang5 July 2015
I admit, I only picked this up for Sarah Butler, seen her in a few horrors and met her in the flesh. And she's doing here what she does best. Being the victim. It's easy to spot that this is a low budget flick because there are almost no effects and the script is rather simple.

You can see it all coming and to be honest there are no surprises to catch in this predictable thriller. It's also sad to see ow deep Malcolm McDowell has fallen. He's the blockbuster in this flick but he's only for 10 minutes in it. I won't go into the story. It's so simple and cheesy sometimes that this is your no-brainer. I enjoyed it but I do understand that the day after watching it most of the people will forgot this flick. Sad to see also that Sarah after her excellent performance in the I Spit On Your Grave remake is only being typecast. Just hope it's no free fall for her career.

If you are into low budget action thrillers then you will enjoy this but if you want to think about whodunit or what's going on, leave this for what it is.
