Amazing little film - How can anyone rate this lower than 5
omendata8 September 2019
It astounds me the lack of compassion and human kindness in the world right now and some of these 1 or 2 out of ten mean reviewers just prove it. This 1 star means it is the worst movie you have ever seen and this is certainly nothing like that;

Great story, well acted and great music along with a fair amount of atmosphere; especially in the flashbacks make this one of the better dramas out this year.

I have to admit I did have a tear in my eye on more than one occasion; big girls blouse mode lol so in my experience when a film can evoke emotion such as that then it cannot be that bad. I rarely give anything more than a 5 or 6 out of ten these days as there are so few movies that merit anything above that but this is a solid 8/10.

Have a drink and a cigar

Warning: Spoilers
This is a heartwarming biopic of Officer Frank Shankwitz (Andrew Steel). He is seen as a throw away child who always landed on his feet. As a child and officer, he learned the lessons of helping others. The film includes his unlikely relationship with Kitty Carlisle (Kirby Bliss Blanton). Not THE Kitty Carlisle.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

One of those movies you cry on. It's like lump is stuck on your throat. Very emotional, very sad movie with beautiful end. A very special movie, you will not forget for a long time. Deserve more than 10, and yes, it's worth watching.

I had to double-check if this is the same movie they're reviewing.

I don't understand how this movie is getting these ratings . I literally had to make sure that there isn't some other film with the same title. I think all these amazing reviews and ratings are from the film crew and their families and friends. It's not a terrible picture but still not a great one. This is at best a TV movie.

Way better than expected.

With a rating just above a 6 I was hesitant, the short description was terrible, and some of the reviews were "harsh". Now I know what an internet troll is. What a wonderful film about a story that absolutely needed to be told. I didn't get the beginning until the end, as I didn't research the story ahead of time. All the characters were solid, relatable and well acted. Knocked off one star because of some scenes that I am sure Frank wanted included but didn't add anything to the story. Just Wow, what a great/sad/uplifting/film. Best I've seen in years.

Lacked continuity and SAM ROCKWELL
PacmanKO886 June 2021
Where was the lead character's black eye after the motorcycle accident that he had before it? Unforgivable. Yet this film did stir up some raw emotion and brought out a few tears. A pleasant viewing experience but not a great or even good movie overall.

Also, I couldn't help wish they made this a bigger budget film with Sam Rockwell as the lead!!!! Right?!! Maybe because they resembled one another a bit, and the character reminded me a bit of Sam's in 3 Billboards.

Inspiring indie film
ardentayu4 January 2020
I stumbled across this gem on Netflix, and it's a good movie if you're in the mood for an uplifting story. It's based on a true story, and it was interesting to see who the boy in the story grew up to be as a man (no spoilers...!)

What Could Have Been
chadg-9854017 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie felt like a missed opportunity. The telling and execution of it are so disorganized and uninspired: Lazy script, weak casting, dis-organized storylines, and too many storylines.

Way too much of the movie was wasted on the bogus civil suit that ultimately was cleared up by less investigative work than a Scooby Doo cartoon.

The crash scene was an absolute disaster. After a pitiful exhibit of "CPR", a stranger with no known medical background, pronounces him dead. Even worse his partner takes her word for it and radios headquarters "Frank's gone.". Suddenly he just wakes up and is immediately back to normal. I think it is much more plausible that he suffered a concussion and passed out.

The love story was contrite and not nearly developed enough to be believable.

An angelic man whom rescues him as a boy and teaches him the importance of helping people, which ultimately becomes what he inspires to do, has maybe 3 minutes of air time.

I could go on... Some people will love this movie and cry and I can understand why. For me though i just couldnt take it's effort serious enough to be moved by it.

Phenomenal Movie!
aservantsheart-9340323 September 2019
The movie had me gripped from the beginning, right to the end! All the actors did incredible work bringing Frank's story to life! I was blessed to see it in my hometown and everyone was moved in the theater. The movie will touch many lives just like "Make a Wish" has! Frank Shankwitz's legacy now lives on in his movie too as it encourages us that no matter what we have been through, we all can make a difference!

Warning: Spoilers
I read a few reviews before deciding this may be a worthwhile watch. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. Whilst there is no avoiding the messages coming from this film. Like do unto others etc., the way this message of good over sadness and some evil gets lost in a sea of sugar coated sentimental twaddle. At best, this is a film for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Uncomplicated in the extreme. Predictable and shallow. The best line in the film is at the funeral of Christian Ganiere's character when Frank, having been thanked by the boy's mother for attending crassly says " I wouldn't have missed it for the world". Who writes that stuff. If you like fluffy animals and candy floss, and you are twelve years old, this is the film for you.

Watched with my wife and not ashamed to admit to crying with her. A wonderful human and uplifting movie - the end was surprisingly uplifting and unexpected while completely fitting. The amazing ensemble cast deserves a raft of nominations.

Based upon true events -- sad and happy, disappointment and joy. A very good story with marginal acting. It is still worth watching.

Loved the Comradery of Characters
Intermissionman_9 September 2019
I have been anxious to see this Film for Months, as Andrew Steel and Director Theo Davies were in San Diego doing PR and I saw them interviewed on KUSI News, but never was released in San Diego theatres ? Anyway, finally found it available for Purchase on Amazon Prime. Needless to say it was worth the wait ! What an outstanding Job in Film Making. The way Andrew Steel brings Frank Shankwitz to Life on screen brought me to tears. All the weak reviews are trolls for sure because I do not see how anyone with a Heart could not connect to this true story. The Flashbacks to his childhood seemed so real. The Comradery of all the characters is really well done too. Having some of the Cast from CHIPS in the Film was smart. An emotion filled Movie thru out, well worth your time and Means something Special. This is the story of the Founder of the Make a Wish Foundation but mainly about his life and childhood and what inspired Him to Found it.

A Beautiful Example Of God's Mysterious Ways
BravoTwoXRay27 September 2019
One of the most heart felt life experiences that could happen to all of us. Never ever give up on your dreams,, no matter how difficult or complicated your life may become. Trust In God Almighty & never give up hope. I would definitely recommend this to children of all ages. Never forget, we all live two lives, the one we learn from, and the one we live after that. The only true path to happiness Is though suffering.

Could Have Been So Much Better!
spasek10 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There's a problem when you juggle several storylines, and you try to give equal time to each of them. Like what happens with a juggler, you end up dropping all of them. This is what happens in this film.

Theo Davis tries to juggle multiple storylines, rather than focusing on the one that matters; the one that everyone wants to see. And what ends up happening is that you have a very uneven script that bobs and weaves all over the place.

Movies and shows have what are called "A," "B," "C," and so forth storylines, listed in order of importance and focus. Your "A" storyline is the one given the most attention and focus. It declines from there based upon the previously mentioned criteria.

Davis gives us these storylines: Frank growing up and the hardships he endures; Frank as a police officer recovering from a nearly fatal accident; Frank as a police officer dealing with corruption within the department as two officers attempt to set him up; Frank meeting Michael, a young boy who is terminally ill and wishes to be a police officer, as his favorite program is CHiPs.

The audience is most interested in Frank's accident and his desire to help Michael. The backstory should have been cut to only a few scenes that show what he went through growing up. The rest has nothing to do with the focal point of the story, which is how the Make-A-Wish program began. The inter-departmental investigation is another storyline that has no bearing or purpose, and it should have been scrapped.

Had the writing and directing maintained its focus on the above-mentioned storylines, you would have had a very cohesive story that was endearing and heart-warming. Instead, because we're served with multiple storylines, we don't feel the connection with Frank and Michael that we should have.

Performances are very good in this film. A lot of young, upcoming talent mixed with some veteran actors you'll undoubtedly recognize. It's just a shame that this story wasn't given its due attention as it certainly deserves. The Make-A-Wish foundation is one of the most amazing nonprofit organizations, granting wishes to hundreds and thousands of kids. Such an organization certainly deserved much more focus and screen time than the 10-15 minutes it was given.

It's Bad. No really
tommy567720 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is a great story but the telling is really pathetic. The acting is seriously bad. Atrocious. Maybe it's poor direction. I don't even know what to say. There are scenes in this movie that completely bypass any semblance of reality. First of all this: accident. Cardiac arrest, CPR, anoxia, skull fracture. Brain swelling. no medical intervention. Home on crutches Um. No. I can't even go on here.

How did this one get out?
xiomatic16 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
What? A movie that isn't cynical, woke, nihilistic? And it's not about a superhero but a real hero? How did this one get out? All the time I was watching this I was waiting for the inevitable. You know, the scene where the tiny little girl beats up four big cowboys at the bar. I was astounded at the scenes where they made the father the sympathetic character and the mother the awful one. Like I said, just how did this get through the censors? Look, I know it's based on a real life story of the Make A Wish Foundation guy, but couldn't they throw in a lnbgtqi2+- character or five? Couldn't they change the gender of the hero guy? And what's this about policemen being compassionate and human?

I don't know how the producers got this one through but I give them 8 stars for it.

Kind of dull for an inspirational story
joey_k-7406022 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I almost don't want to give only a 7 because the make-a-wish foundation is a kind and generous organization. I do not want to rate the foundation badly.

Instead my issue is the storytelling, it is just dull and I found myself looking at my phone at various times. Plus there is not much of a character development and I don't feel engaged with the characters.

This is a comedy, not a drama.
jlandis-80-7574079 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I always check ratings before I watch a movie, that way I know what I'm getting myself into. The fact that this got over a 7 is what intrigued me to watch it. Bad idea. This is a true story about how the Make A Wish Foundation was started. However, the acting is comedic. The script reminds me of a poorly written children's book. I found myself laughing out loud several times because of how bad the acting is. Is it about a good cause? Yes. But don't go into this movie with high expectations.
