A youthful & modern K-drama love story that's suitable for the right viewer.
cremea13 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The Heirs: He Who Wears the Crown Must Bear its Weight. Korean TV, 20 Episodes, Fall/Winter of 2013. It's a melodrama centered on the budding love relationship of two high school students.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Here's your premise: Gather up an enormous number of unbelievably rich & attractive young people and send them off to high school to have a spoiled brat contest. Drop in the poor girl love interest. Rich guy falls for poor girl. Add in multiple back/side/family stories. Let the games begin! That's really all there is to it.

To be honest, I didn't really like this show too much in the beginning, though it did grow on me some over time. I'm not really the target audience for this specific type of K-drama at all, and it was quickly evident this would be another glitzy soap opera primarily geared towards females and younger viewers (of which I am neither). This series had a lot of pre-air buzz though, plus 2 young K-drama stars that I rather like, and I do find some of these particular types of shows to be enjoyable on occasion, so I checked it out...Also, my GF insisted we watch it, so, Yeah!

Lee Min-Ho and Park Shin-Hye are your 2 leads. Min-Ho portrays the rich handsome guy, and Shin-Hye plays the poor beautiful girl. Together, they represent your shining beacons of light trying to find love in an endless sea of mean & manipulative rich people. Both stars have put in real good work in this field in the past, but they're each in their mid-20's now and are getting way too mature to be passed off as teenagers anymore. Nevertheless, they both got the job done quite well of what's asked of them throughout this show, though I do sincerely hope this is the last time I see either of them playing a high school student ever again.

The 2 leads first meet while they're each in LA for different reasons; they get to know each other and lay the ground work for their relationship to come while there. Unfortunately, this also means we must endure several scenes involving some "Euro-Americanese" characters. Where on Earth do they find these people to play these roles?...As usual in KTV shows, they are all terrible actors and overtly buffoonish caricatures compared to the actual Americans I know. Thankfully, this show gets back to Korea after a couple episodes, so we can finally dispense with the moronic surfer dude, fat cop, & the laughably gimpy gangsters.

Once back in Korea, and due to some convenient circumstances, our 2 stars soon eventually find themselves both living together in the same mansion and going to the same high school for the super-rich. The vast majority of the students at this school are generally awful human beings; there's lots of bullying, self-centeredness, materialism, pea-cocking, etc. This is not surprising when you're introduced to their parents (as they're little more than older and worse versions of their offspring). When you combine all the rotten kids and adults, what results in a ton of people not to like in this story. I understand these are characters you're supposed to "root against" to start with, but it doesn't take long to simply become exasperated by the sheer volume of them, and how many endless scenes they thus must appear in to have their side stories told.

Our two leads ultimately get down to the business of falling in love and deciding that they're going to try to be together no matter what, provided they can successfully navigate all the hoops & hurdles in their path (which are considerable). From there, it's just a matter of seeing how everything will play out for our star crossed lovers and everyone else that surrounds them. It's all pretty standard & expected fare for this genre.

Is this show good or worth watching? Well, that all depends on the following:

On the one hand; if you're not a fan of these types of shows to begin with, 'The Heirs' is unlikely to change your opinion of them. This is a very predictable & familiar story that follows the usual linear plot lines for this type of Korean melodrama. There is very little light heartedness involved, it can often be quite limited in both range & dialogue, there are countless scenes of longing & anguish, and, the love story can take its time going from point A to point B due to all the obstacles involved.

On the other hand; if you are a fan of this stuff, then this show is essentially Must See TV. The show is absolutely beautiful to look at on a number of levels (except for a few questionable wardrobe choices for Min Ho's character), and it is fully loaded with just about everything you would expect &/or could hope for in this type of Korean melodrama. The central love story is fairly effective on the whole when it's actually focused on, multiple characters appropriately grow & evolve over time, story arcs are sufficiently addressed & resolved as the show unfolds and eventually concludes, etc. In this sense, the show does exactly what it's supposed to, and, it likely pulled in huge TV ratings and was surely adored by many viewers.

I'd probably give this show maybe a 6 star grade on my "personal likability meter", as these particular despair/angst type filled young love stories rarely suit my own tastes or preferences for what I'm looking for from a Korean TV show. I will say that I did generally like it overall though (particularly so, when compared to some other very similarly themed KTV melodramas I've seen in the past). So, in the spirit of trying to be fair and remain objective to the crowd it's aimed at, I'll rate this show accordingly.

Bottom Line: 7-8 out of 10 stars!

Entertaining Drama. Perfect Lead Actor.
castrocastle20001 October 2018
I enjoyed most of this drama which was carried by Min Ho Lee. The supporting actors were believable. However I only gave it a 7 because the lead actress had one emotion throughout the whole series, hurt puppy dog. It was hard to finish the entire series because her reaction to every situation was always the same no matter how determined the suiter however, Min Ho's perseverence and character ultimately made it worth holding on until the end.

Sweet, predictable and heart warming
Rita_Roy5 November 2017
So if you are watching a KDrama and expect it to be mind bending, without cliche's and tropes, you shouldn't be watching this. If you do like your KDramas, you should be used to tropes and clichés and enjoy the sheer beauty of watching old fashioned, sweet melodrama with familiar characters. Heirs is no different. Beautifully shot, with fantastic actors, a detailed story and characters, it is a satisfying drama that made me really enjoy my time getting to know their story. And yes, would love to see Choi Young Du get his own story!

Emotional
badea-bianca935 April 2020
I am not sure if it really deserves 10 stars or if it is only my enthusiasm, but I didn't have in a long time a TV show that would keep me dreaming about it at night and not being ale to stop it. I did not have the patience to read all the reviews but i have so many comments that I don't even know where to start. First, I consider this being such a powerful and emotional lesson for all of us, no matter the age. People should really try hard on learning how to grow up, how to express their feelings, how to laugh even though you are in a bad situation and how to get over that bad situation with dignity and more knowledge about you and about others. From my point of view, this is not only a teenage drama since a lot of people in the world are still not able to do all the mentioned above things. The TV show also shows you the power of extreme friendship, not only love power to forgive and to care, power to accept who you are and to accept others. I've seen in a comment that it is sexist because it is the well known subject of strong male character and weak female character, but guess what ? That's the reality in Korea and in other Asian countries, guys. Women have very not even half of the power and benefits of the men. Yeah, if you want to watch a SF drama with a superhero girl, just move over this title. It is not time for K dramas to adapt to the 21st century as some said below, but it's time for Asian cultures to respect women more strongly and to recognize them. Also, people said that the actors to not look like 18 year old students. Guys, really? If you watch an American TV show with teenagers you will be surprised how the 16 year old girl look like and behave in these days. Korean actors from my point of view, all look like teenagers and they are very beautiful at the same time. To conclude, even though I have a lot more to say but I think it's better to stop here, don't hesitate to watch this movie, especially if you like romantism.

Bearing the Weight of the Crown - How Heavy is it?
PalmBeachG8 March 2022
This romantic and emotionally dramatic series is centered around a privileged private school where the hierarchy is determined by how successful and rich your father is and what you have to gain as an inheritance. The lowest students in the hierarchy are those that are there as a student in need. The students are 18 and are all struggling with first loves, friendships, career paths and family issues and "arranged fiancés". Because of the different hierarchies one school punk takes on the role bullying the less fortunate.

A welcome change for me is that the story opens in LA in the US where one famous inheritor, Tan, has been living the life of luxury in a mansion alone for 3 years already. He was thrown out of his home and banished from Korea by his family due to a harsh father and rivalry with his older brother. The brothers have always been rivalries due to Tan's mother was a mistress. Tan is handsome with an edgy bad boy look that all the California girls love, but Tan is still lonely in his heart. The love story starts here in LA when he accidentally meets a Korean girl, Cha Eun Sang, who just arrived in the US searching for her sister to surprise her for her wedding. It turns out things weren't as her sister portrayed and things went from bad to worse. Eun Sang found herself sobbing all alone on the sidewalk with no where to go, all her money stolen, no passport with Tan watching from a distance. Even though Tan is an edgy, somewhat mysterious bad boy vibe, he has a good heart and helps her by inviting her to his mansion for a place to stay and to help get her passport back. Cha Eun Sang is scared of being murdered like in a horror film but with no other choice goes with him.

Cha Eun Sang does not know who he is in Korea and does what she needs to do to get her passport back and figure out a way to get money for a ticket to get back home. Do they fall in love? Let's just say that Cha Eun Sang calls it her Midnight Dream as she needs to get home to her disabled mother who she loves and helps. Her mother is waiting for her, and as much as it hurts her, she leaves Tan for her family wondering if it was really all a dream. Tan tries everything to stop her - he doesn't really know much about her - who she is or where she lives.

The next part is when Tan returns to Korea to try and resolve his issues with his family as his loneliness had been too much too bear. Tan is still obsessed with his memories he had in the US with Cha Eun Sang and is haunted at night in his home by the back of a woman with long hair that looks just like Cha Eun Sang and he can't sleep. He asks his mother if the place is haunted. Will Tan ever see Cha Eun Sang again? Perhaps she is closer than he ever imagined.

I loved the series being exposed to this type of atmosphere in the US - I think it is very realistic - corporate structures and wars, private schools, parents "fixing" children up on dates, wearing school uniforms so all kids look the same (poor kids sans jewelry), driving nice cars. Ups and downs with friends for money or love. So what can we ALL learn from this movie? Tan reminisces about a school lesson he had in the US where he wrote his feelings on a paper and turned it in before going back to Korea. The answer to what we can learn from this movie is in the ending and it is all worth watching and makes you think what's important in life.

It is just okay
Misss2531 May 2021
The story is pretty predictable and non realistic. This evolves with a family melodrama having two mother, of course, the one and only son from mistress along with school bullying later falling both of the guy falling with love with female lead. Pretty absurd! Then two guys trying their best to get the female lead, kind of competing against each other with unnecessary dragging.

I really hate why in every K-Drama a girl has be a poor girl living from hands to mouth and a boy has to be super rich with lots of family problems.

Do I like you?
pandasl14 November 2020
I rewatched the beginning episodes a few times. At the theatre when they were resting from chasers, Kim Tan turns his head toward Cha Eun Sang , then 'kills' with the line, " Do I like you? ", with a look that dares you not to like him. Can't get enough of that look. I think Lee Min Ho is at his best when he is a bit dangerous, unpredictable, as in City Hunter. In Heirs, the actors were more college age than high-school. Not sure why they the plot called for high-schoolers, but then, I'm not sure if in Korea, it is likely for a maid's daughter to be able work her way through college, But it didn't bother me with the story line. In all, this was an enjoyable movie to get to know Korean drama and Lee Min Ho. I am a new fan from New York.

Heirs romance just OK...
fprefect-685-28108415 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I expected a wonderful story from the writer Kim Eun-Sook that gave us Secret Garden and compelling acting from our main romantic leads, Lee Min-Ho (Boys Over Flowers, City Hunter) and Park Shin-Hye (Flower Boy Next Door, You are Beautiful). What I got was an OK story and two leads that had better chemistry with the other supporting actors on the show rather than with each other.

Unfortunately man-handling and dictating orders to our leading lady is what passed for romance in Heirs. I like both lead actors but they did not click as a couple. Witness the awkward passionless final kiss of the last episode. How many scenes did the director insert of our leads passing each other while not acknowledging the other due to some misunderstanding between them?

What I liked about Heirs:

a) most of the men supporting characters were handsome, assured, and engaging even though there were plenty of character flaws. The character Choi Young-Do, the second male lead, was damaged goods but the actor, Kim Woo-Bin, made him compelling and interesting when he could have just been the classic bully without any redeeming qualities.

b) the hidden mistress mom of our male lead and mute maid mother of our female lead had wonderful chemistry and were fun to watch.

c) original soundtrack is good and the music was woven in the series nicely.

What I didn't like about Heirs:

a) could you find worse actors to play the American roles? I don't think so. So glad when the characters returned to Korea.

b) the writing made the characters passionless and flat. Most of the women were bitchy or doormats. Most of the men were domineering or stuck under the thumb of their domineering parents. Limited fun was had in this show. Some cute lines each show did not save this series. Episodes 1-12 were a lot of setup/repetition and episodes 13-20 were the payoff. I loved the writing of Secret Garden so my expectations were high for Heirs and I was disappointed.

A look into love in the midst of social hierarchy
leahcubed20 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The series follows a group of rich, privileged high school students as they are about to take over their families' business empires, overcoming difficulties and growing every step of the way. The male lead, Kim Tan (Lee Min-ho), was exiled to the U.S. by his brother, Kim Won (Choi Jin-hyuk) in a power play for control of the family business. Kim Tan falls in love with Cha Eun-sang (Park Shin-hye) while in the united states. Difficulties ensue as he is already engaged to a fellow heiress, Yoo Rachel (Kim Ji-won). Choi Young-do (Kim Woo-bin) was formerly Kim Tan's best friend and begins paying attention to Cha Eun-sang to annoy Tan but also winds up in love with her. Kim Tan has to choose between love and his "destiny" as a heir.

Elements of this reminded me of a popular American television drama called "Dallas." The interplay between the haves and have nots was interesting. The romance between the leads was Cinderella like. I liked seeing the situations for all the different characters. The extremes of wealth are not easy. Being too wealthy there are very rigid expectations and being too poor you are too busy surviving to enjoy freedom. It is exaggerated a bit but I see elements of it in the culture I am most familiar with. There are schools in the United States where the wealthy kids are an echelon above everyone else. It seems to be a way people have stratified themselves throughout the course of human history. I would have rated this even higher but there were some aspects of the ending that were not finsished. I like things completely and nicely wrapped up. There is some sad throughout this drama so anyone that has issues with sad elements should be aware. It ends mostly happy though.

Must watch for kdrama lovers
hanalisss12 August 2023
This one left an indelible mark on the genre. This captivating series effortlessly combines romance, drama, and a touch of melodrama to create an unforgettable viewing experience.

The stellar ensemble cast, including Lee Min-ho and Park Shin-hye, brings their characters to life with depth and charisma. The chemistry between the leads is palpable, drawing viewers into their emotional journey and making them invest in the unfolding relationships.

Set against a backdrop of opulence and privilege, it offers a window into the lives of the wealthy elite, complete with all the glamour and intrigue that entails. The lavish settings and fashion choices add to the allure, creating a visual feast for the audience.

While the drama incorporates some familiar tropes, it does so with a fresh and engaging approach. The narrative weaves together themes of love, friendship, and personal growth, making it a compelling watch for fans of both romance and character-driven stories.

It has earned its place in the pantheon of classic kdramas, leaving an enduring legacy due to its memorable characters, evocative storytelling, and unforgettable romantic moments. If you're in search of a series that has stood the test of time and continues to captivate audiences, this drama is a must-watch that will whisk you away into a world of romance and intrigue.

Interesting drama but always the same weak-minded, weak-will, passive, helpless female lead
moonracer012016 January 2020
I enjoyed watching this drama and all the different plot twists, but it's still a very typical, average K-drama with the same cookie-cutter characters. The male lead (played with Lee Min Ho) is arrogant and selfish while the female lead (played by Park Shin Hye) is weak, lacks assertivness, and can't stand up for herself.

Given the increasing popularity of K-dramas outside of Asia it's time for producers and directors to create unique, interesting characters that diverse audiences care about, starting with a strong, assertive female lead who thinks for herself and advocates for herself. The closest I've seen to a strong female lead is "Strong Girl Bong Soon", but due to her superhuman strength she is not conventionally beautiful by Korean drama standards. There is nothing wrong with that - it's refreshing in fact, but conventionally attractive actresses should also be able to play powerful heroes as well.

I'd like to see a female lead who is fearless, who can stand up for herself and stand up for others as well. Park Shin Hye's character almost became this person because she has a strong sense of right and wrong as well as empathy for others. But sadly, she holds back her sense of justice and becomes a passive bystander to bullying.

I'd love for K-dramas to start embracing 21st century, progressive values. How about a female action hero who is a better fighter then the men around her? Strong Girl Bong Soon should not be the only one. We already see sensitive male characters who aren't afraid of their feminine side or pushing the audience's tolerance for gay characters. Let's challenge sexist attitudes and depict female characters who aren't afraid of their masculine side!

Nope !! Just annoying !!
mervesenalovatic23 October 2018
Same old story and blah blah blah. So true. But there is another thing that i couldn't bare. Cha Eun Sang . I didn't like the character at all. She doesn't even fight for what she believes or feels . She acts like " I love you but we can't do this." But if Kim Tan gives up on her she is like " It is the best for everyone but why ? " and cries all the time. Kim Tan is always protecting her. Like women need to be protected by men 😡😡😡😡. It kind of gives that idea. Except for all this it is a classic rich boy poor girl drama. 😧😧😧

Equivalent to 90210 but in korea
KdramaInStudio26 May 2021
I still think American kids don't have as much responsibility as some of the Asian countries - for example, were not going to marry for a merger, especially being engaged in high school.

I actually was Iin a scenario like this one where the Dad of the boy was a nightmare. And, this Dad is the ultimate ruin of everyone's life whereas if he had not been so focused on money he could of had a better relationship with his sons.

There were some very funny scenes.

There are some interesting student scenes wher you wonder - where are the teachers?

The show is about friendship, love and family commitment.

The Soundtrack OST is perfect. Every time I play it I think of the movie and it makes me happy.

I wonder if it's a true depiction of Korean wealthy schools.

I loved the way Lee Min Ho betrays a high school student who truly loves his girlfriend. The characters were perfectly played. Every girl should have a boyfriend like this.

fpkvbcjmj30 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Watching this after a lot of other kdrama bingeing, this is just okay for me. Since I saw this 9 years later, and comparing it to other kseries released recently, it was a lot of cringe from me.

Acting was quite good, young and adult characters. Music was annoying though, "love is the moment" was too much and repetitive.

Story was good, Lee Min Ho's character and story development was smooth though I feel the LA chance meeting was too short to develop any deeper feelings for a guy helping out a stranger for two days. Park Shin Hye's acting was actually quite good, it was natural and no overacting, however I felt her script or character development was not written well as she always acted safe with the male lead in LA and then clueless/annoyed after reuniting in Korea. I mean, I felt Lee Min Ho's acting showed his affection to the female lead from the beginning but Park Shin Hye was nothing but frowning/unwelcoming then suddenly she's all emo over him in episode 9-10. I was like, I cant figure her out. I felt her acting centered too much on her family drama it failed to balance the romance part of her story which was the main thing. I guess script lacked parts of expressing her affections to the male lead--or maybe because she does not have any female friends where she can openly talk about her secrets or love.

The rest of the episodes are cliche. It was predictable but it was not bad.

So Much To Say...
minad8714 January 2022
Bro...this show. I mean what the heck have I watched??

In terms of a weak female lead character, my god!! She cries in every single episode, she's pushed around in every other episode, usually has no backbone and yet is completely watchable. I know, I know...Korean shows usually have this type of female lead and it's not anything new but I just can't move on from how she was treated and yet still she took it all. I suppose in a way, she wasn't weak at all then.

Despite this, I truly did like this one. The male lead character is the main reason why, he REALLY fights for this girl. That's what made this so addictive, I just wanted to see how far he would go.

Woo Bin was also great as the bad guy with a good heart, he annoyed me but then impressed me. Great acting.

I would recommend it but only if you like the older style dramas like Coffee Prince or Personal Taste.

8 star for Lee Min-Ho
shareen_shany17 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is not high school but college drama. It's the burden of being too rich & connected. How the rich bully & do anything to get their way. Marriage are arranged by force & parent believes force to get their kids what they want. It's a vicious cirkel, the kids are exactly like the parents. It's actually terrible to watch the deceit, lies, betrayal, bullying, the stupidity, gossiping, parents dream, suffocation, phony, immaturity, spoiled brats & pitiful. Some people are just so vicious0 This is definitely not one of the best due to the exaggeration or my favourite.

I watch because of the lead actor Lee Min-Ho. He is good in the king - eternal monarch so I check this show out. He is great here too! The lead actress has a terrible script, always helpless, always damsel in distress & indecisive. Rachel is very vicious! Bo-na turns out to be sweet. Even Yong Do is sweet in the end. The best is the brothers relationship. Though its a good drama but not one I will binge watch again. One could feel the love from him to her but the girl has no clue how to reciprocate, so somehow its unnatural. Couldn't feel her love to him. No warmth, no passion hence no love.

Young love
alaningle728 May 2020
Poor girl goes to posh school and handsome rich guys want to protect her from the affluent snobbish students. Acting is quite good and it catches the all consuming obsession that comes with first loves. I particularly liked the fact that unlike the youths romances for the adults it doesn't run so smoothly. Worth a watch and my only criticism would be the amount of times the female is grabbed by the arm and pulled to where the male wants her. On occasions it felt warranted but other times it was more like assault.

Love and hate the drama
madbird-6124327 December 2018
I love the acting of almost all the leads in the drama. Lee, the most handsome oppa in my mind, would not fail the audience by his smart appearance and superb acting skill.

The problem is, no matter how good is Lee, he is too old to be a high school student. So are the other leads. Female lead wearing that short school skirt is another disaster. This is the fault of writer kim, but not the actors. I manage to finish it and always loop the romantic scene, but i cannot give a high rate to it.

I Stopped Watching in the Middle of an Episode to Write This
sareed19715 January 2022
Why do they invariably take a FL from competent, intelligent and resourceful and turn her into a crying, frowning, trembling mess of emotions? The FL in this show ends up allowing herself to be grabbed forcefully by the wrist, tugged, pulled, tripped onto a hard floor and told what to do, when to do it and told who they can do it with. It's desperately depressing to watch.

I realize Heirs/Inheritors is a 2013 production, but that's not so far in the past that manhandling should be an acceptable part of the script. Sometimes it's frustrating to watch Korean writers perpetuate some of the most repressive things about South Korea. That women can and should be controlled by men many times against their will. It can take a teenage drama and drag it down to unbelievably misogynistic levels. Wake up, writers. Let the females continue to be self -assured and confident through out the series. Or let them at least show some emotional and intellectual growth by having them stop the males from mistreating them.

The sad part is you still see it in current productions.
