- The FBI discovers that Ryan has been interfering with the investigation since the subway murders, as the hunt for the twins continues.
- Following the attack at the museum, the FBI have identified at least 2 suspects, Luke and Mark. They also know Ryan has been conducting his own investigation and try, unsuccessfully, to get him to work with them. Mike Weston pushes Ryan to reveal his theory of how Joe managed to escape but Mike refuses to believe Joe is still alive. The FBI get a lead on Emma which leads them to arrested 6 of Joe's followers from the Havenport cult. Emma however wasn't there having made contact with Mark and Luke and decides to join them. The FBI tells Ryan to avoid anything related to the case or face arrest. He regrets having put Lily in danger but she appreciates his help and what he's done for her. Ryan begins to suspect someone. In Arkansas meanwhile, Judy returns home to find Rev. Glenn dead in her living room. She thought she had been a good influence on Joe but now wonders what she may have done wrong. Joe's not sure what to do about her after she pulls a gun on him but Mandy has a solution.—garykmcd
- At the cabin, Mandy is worried about what her mother will say when she sees the dead reverend. She helpfully suggests rolling him up in the carpet and dragging him to the barn, but before they can even get started, Judy comes home.
Ryan thinks he hears a noise in his apartment and gets up with his gun to investigate. He sees Joe standing in his living room and shoots at him repeatedly. But nothing happens. "You can't kill me Ryan. If I die, you die," Joe says as he stabs Ryan.
Ryan wakes up.
He gets up and opens his bedroom door and sees someone in a Joe mask facing him.
This time Ryan wakes up in the FBI building where he's waiting to join the debriefing of the museum attack. They give him his cell phone back.
When he joins them, Agent Martinez warns Ryan not to identify too closely with the victim, Lily, pointing out he nearly got her killed.
They were able to track Carlos from the subway attack to his apartment and found footage of Ryan following him and getting hit by the cab. Ryan has to tell them he has the Joe mask. Martinez lists all the things they could charge him with, but lets him go. Mike throws judgey eye lasers at him.
They put a tracker in Ryan's cell phone and also decide to monitor his Internet activity.
In their hotel room, Gisele tends to Luke's bullet graze. "An official Ryan Hardy gun shot wound, hell ya," he says. Suddenly, the twins see their faces on the news, but Mark is unconcerned, saying it was inevitable.
Emma calls again. Mark wants to have a little fun with her.
In New Jersey, Emma tries to think of a reason why Joe wouldn't have contacted her if he was really alive.
Mark has Carlos call Emma and ask to meet. Luke is concerned, but Mark assures it won't hurt anything.
Ryan goes to see Lily Gray and apologizes again for putting her at risk. She is getting used to him checking up on her and likes it.
Out in the woods, Judy is miffed Joe killed the reverend, thinking it means she didn't "fix" Joe. He tells her he realized "once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic" and life isn't worth living if you don't have a "scotch" now and then. He plans to leave at nightfall, and suggests they'll keep quiet if they're smart. He would hate for anything to happen to them.
Ryan comes home to see his apartment door ajar and his security system smashed. He finds Mike in his secret Joe Carroll war room.
Ryan insists he has no proof that Joe is still alive. He discovered that Joe has a half-brother named William Halston, who went missing 14 months ago, and the DNA archive was broken into around the same time. Ryan thinks the brother's body is what they found at the lighthouse and it matched the switched DNA. A half-brother would have also matched closely to Joe's son. He knows it sounds crazy.
"You have earned your crazy, Ryan," Mike says, but he still thinks Joe is dead.
Mike gets a call about Emma and leaves.
Emma arrives at the abandoned building where Carlos sent her. Mark stalks her and sneaks up on her, but she pulls a knife on him. He introduces himself and is delighted to meet her.
At FBI HQ, they have footage of Emma on the street and have tracked her back to her New Jersey place. Martinez calls in SWAT.
In the woods, Mandy asks Joe not to go. She's never had a father figure before.
Judy goes to talk to Joe. When he turns his back on her, she pulls a gun and fires. It's empty. He took the bullets out.
Joe walks over to her and starts choking her. "Sadly, Judy, I am no longer in need of your utopian slut palace, but I thank you for your hospitality all the same," he says.
Mandy runs out in tears and begs him to stop. He lets Judy go.
In the abandoned building, Mark tells Emma that Carlos says Joe is alive and that Roderick had plans to switch Joe's DNA to fake his death. Mark admits they're trying to lure Joe out of hiding. "The man's a narcissist. It's not a judgment, it's a fact. I don't think he can resist," Mark says.
Emma is living with six other cult members. Mark invites her to come meet his group. She asks if she should be afraid.
"Do you feel fear? I struggle with that. I can identify it in others, but I have a hard time experiencing it myself," he says. She agrees to go.
Back at the New Jersey house, SWAT surrounds the building. They break down the door and shoot the first person who greets them with a gun. Martinez shoots another in the back as he runs and she sees a giant bomb in the corner. Down in the basement, Mike wounds another.
Outside the building, Martinez is angry to see Ryan waiting. She orders him to stay away from the case and Lily Gray.
Ryan goes to see Lily Gray, who brushes off the FBI agent guarding her when she says she has orders not to let Ryan see her.
Lily invites him up. He tells her he came to say good-bye, for her own safety. Instead, she talks to him about fate and the idea that our choices and mistakes define us. She never takes the subway, but was running late that day. She invites him to stay for dinner.
At the psycho hotel, Luke, Gisele and Carlos see the news about the New Jersey raid. Mark brings Emma. Luke isn't happy he brought her. They show Emma the news.
Back in the woods, Joe tapes up Judy to stage the scene like the reverend killed her.
Joe goes to look for his knife in the kitchen. Judy points out to Mandy that it's on the couch. When Joe comes back in the room, Judy urges her daughter to kill Joe. Mandy holds the knife loosely and tries to talk herself into it as Joe waits, mostly annoyed.
Then Mandy turns and drives the knife into her mother's stomach, again and again. She apologizes, but tells her mother she can't let Joe go and she's dead either way because living here is death.
In the motel room, they ask Emma why they should trust her. She makes the case she was Joe's No. 2 and Carlos was just his errand boy. Luke is convinced, and points out no one likes Carlos anyway. He stabs Carlos in the neck.
Gisele is furious, saying Carlos was hers to kill. She runs off pouting as Carlos gurgles. Luke points out he's not dead yet and she could still finish him off. Emma isn't sure about her new friends.
Ryan drops by Lily's art gallery to see Mike. He wants to see the photos from the subway attack, from the moment Lily got on the train.
Ryan sees an express train go by Lily and he wonders why she didn't get on it.
He watches her giving a tour around the gallery and sizes her up. Lily notices him watching and judging. She excuses herself to go downstairs.
Ryan tells Mike that Lily is in on it and he radios to the agent following her downstairs. But it's too late, Lily rips off her arm sling and stabs the agent in the head. She grabs a bag and opens a secret door in the gallery basement.
As Mike and Ryan try to figure out where she went, on the other side, Lily does a quick change into all black and sneaks around the basement space.
Lily comes up the stairs in a blazer and red wig and runs into another agent, whom she promptly tazes. She keeps walking calmly as a crowd gathers to help the man and Ryan sees her turn and look back.
He chases after her and she removes the wig, ditches it in a garbage can, and changes out of the black coat she just put on. She buys a scarf from a street vendor and keeps wakling. Ryan sees the red wig in the trash and follows.
Lily steals a woman's phone and calls someone, saying "they know" and telling them to meet her at a church.
Ryan follows her but finally loses her on the city streets. His phone rings. It's Lily, asking how he knew.
"You said you were in a hurry, but you passed up the Express," he says. "I feel like an amateur. And we were just about to have our first date. My loss," she says.
She taunts him, asking if she's the first woman he's opened up to since Claire. "You were meant to be my gift to Joe, now I'll just have to show up empty handed," she says.
She hangs up and keeps walking, but he catches sight of her again and runs after her down the street as Mike pulls up. But Ryan has lost her again.
Lily gets in a waiting car and tells Luke to drive. "Yes, Mother," he says.
Back in the woods, Joe and Mandy prepare to torch the house. Mandy suggests they leave the reverend's car two towns over.
She thanks him for taking her and worries about disappointing him. "I worry about disappointing you," he says. "I believe in you, Joe," she says.
In the motel, they get a call and pack up in a hurry.
Back at the art gallery, Ryan assures an angry Martinez that he had no idea Lily was in on it until now. They both ran background checks on her and she appeared to be who she said she was.
Out in the woods, Mandy and Joe say a prayer for Judy and the reverend. Mandy asks that God bless Joe for saving her and he asks that God bless Mandy for having faith in him.
Joe torches the house and trailer.
Back home in his research HQ, Ryan is angry at himself.
Lily rides into the night with Luke.
Joe and Mandy watch the flames then get in the car and drive off.
Ryan looks at a picture of Claire and feels her loss all over again.
