Gaining just a limited big screen release in Britain, Sebastian Silva’s unique drama Crystal Fairy is now out and available to own on DVD (and to watch digitally) – and to mark the occasion, we spoke to the eponymous character herself, Gaby Hoffmann.
Playing Crystal Fairy – a hippie who embarks on a trip across Chile to take hallucinogenic drugs on the beach with her new friend Jamie (Michael Cera) amongst others, the former child actress – starring in films such as Uncle Buck and Field of Dreams – shows off a different side to herself that we’ve never seen before…
Crystal is one of those characters you never want to be off screen. Where did you get your inspiration from?
Thank you, that’s very nice. Sebastian [Silva], the director, had had a real experience with Crystal Fairy, who’s very similar to the one in the movie, about a decade before he made it.

The unconventional development process pioneered by Amazon Studios extends to the deals it offers actors, according to casting director Alyssa Weisberg. The streaming service doesn’t offer holding deals to its performers the way TV networks have traditionally done with actors that network executives think could work in a variety of projects. But Weisberg, who cast Amazon’s new comedy series “Betas” and has consulted for the company on other projects, said that enhances the casting process. “That is one of the things that is nice about Amazon at the moment, is that we don’t have to put actors in holding deals into roles that they might not be right for,” she told Backstage. In October, Amazon gave the greenlight to three pilots: “Mozart in the Jungle,” which was written by Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman, and Alex Timbers; “The Outlaws,” by screenwriters Jeremy Garelick and Jon Weinbach; and “Transparent,...

Following a triumphant showing at the London Film Festival last month, Jill Soloway’s comedy feature After Delight is back on British shores now at the 17th UK Jewish Film Festival, and ahead of its showing we had the great pleasure in speaking to the talented, and very funny director herself.
Afternoon Delight, which features Kathryn Hahn and Juno Temple in the lead roles, marks Soloway’s directorial debut, in a film that is charming and witty as it is poignant. Soloway discusses the rise in female voices in Hollywood at present, her influences, and her delight at the film being aired at festivals across the world. Which reminds us, tickets to the Ukjff showing can be purchased here.
Afternoon Delight is your feature film debut. You’ve been writing for a number of years, but was it always the intention to one day sit in the director’s chair?...

Writer/Director/Producer Jill Soloway has always considered herself a “storyteller first and a filmmaker by necessity”. As a child, she and her sister created and performed plays for anyone that they could get to watch. This evolved into a drive to write and direct films and TV and to tell longer and better kinds of stories. Her career has been a successful one, serving as a writer and producer for series such as United States of Tara and Six Feet Under - for which she was nominated for 3 primetime Emmy Awards and a WGA award. She also took home the Best Director prize at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival for her feature film Afternoon Delight which she both wrote and directed.
