Great For So-Cal Locals
Calaboss11 September 2014
Local radio and TV personality Ralph Story narrates this tale (two tales really. MORE Things That Aren't Here Anymore is like part two) of things that used to be in Los Angeles and aren't here anymore. Like the Angel's Flight trolley, the Brown Derby restaurant, car hops, Schwab's Pharmacy, Helm's bakeries, Lion Country Safari, the Spruce Goose, the Coconut Grove, etc., etc.. Mention is made also of old TV shows like Sheriff John and Hobo Kelly. It runs now and again on the local PBS station, KCET. I'm not sure if it's shown nationwide. I presume not.

While most of the tale is told by Story, there are also people who remember those old days and give their thoughts on some of the old landmarks. It's big fun to see and remember yesteryear, but I'm not sure how fun you would find it if you hadn't grown up there.

Sadly, since 2006, Ralph Story isn't here anymore either.

Saw it on YouTube today

Someone has uploaded it on YouTube. I am a tail end boomer, born in 62, so I don't really remember these things, but I did start life in L.A., born in a hospital in Norwalk. Unfortunately my memories of L.A. revolve more around Watts riots, and the Northridge earthquake....But I enjoyed this bit of nostalgia, and laughed at "Ostrich....the meat of the 90s" Yeah, along with bison, kangaroo and aligator.LOL.

LA as I remember it

I grew up while a lot of these things were still around. I remember the big red Pacific Electric cars that would take you all over SoCal for just a few cents. I remember eating at Clifton's cafeteria, the alligator farm that used to be next to Knott's Berry Farm, the Helms bakery trucks and riding on the Angels Flight cars. It was always fun to go to the Pike (way before Disneyland), and I remember going downtown at Christmas and see all the window displays. One day they let us out of school so that we could see them taking the parts of the Spruce Goose to the harbor. TV hadn't caught on yet but we used to go to the studios and be part of the audience at live radio shows. I especially remember going to the Gene Autry show, enjoying Lion Country Safari and a lot more. I miss many of these things and mourn their passing. I wish they would release both this show and the follow up "More things that aren't here anymore" on DVD.
