- When Zoe, Queenie and Nan use a ouija board to find out what happened to Madison, they awaken the spirit of a long-dead serial killer, the Axeman.
- New Orleans, 1919 A man types the story of "The Axeman," a horrible murderer stalking the town with his axe in a saxophone case. He hacks his victims to death. He submits his treatise to the newspaper, in which he says anyone playing jazz music Tuesday night will be spared.
At Ms. Robichaux's Academy, the young scared witches try to decide what to do. One suggests they come together and use their combined powers to fend him off.
After finishing his set, Joe, the Axeman, packs up and wanders the streets, delighted by the strains of jazz he hears coming from most houses.
The witches play opera. The Axeman lets himself in and follows the sound upstairs, where one waits for him doing a tarot card reading. She turns over the Death card and he says she has only herself to blame. Someone stabs him in the back -- the reading was for him. One by one, the witches come out in black silk hooded capes and stab the Axeman, converging on him in a bloody frenzy.
Zoe looks through Madison's things, including a small gun. A small glass vial falls out of handkerchief and rolls into the closet. Zoe finds a trove of photos and an old version of a Ouija board.
She presents her findings to Queenie and Nan, pointing out that the numbers of witches is severely dwindling. Zoe pours them each a shot of absinthe and suggests they watch each other's back and find Madison.
Later, around the spirit board, Queenie is worried about releasing a spirit. Zoe begins asking questions. They determine they're talking to a spirit who was murdered in the house. When they ask who killed the spirit, the board moves their hands to "you did." They take their hands off the shot glass but it keeps moving and spells out "Axeman." Queenie swats the glass to the floor, warning Zoe to figure out who she's talking to.
At the hospital, Fiona gets her chemotherapy treatment and is able to hear people's thoughts for the first time in her life. It overwhelms her and she rips the IV out tries to leave. The doctor encourages her to sit down. Fiona is getting the treatment for Cordelia, not herself. She talks half-to herself, saying she just wants to belong to someone.
Zoe reads up on the Axeman, finding that he killed eight women. "If women will not dance to the sound of my axe, I will gladly make them dance to another," he says, referring to his saxophone. The Axeman disappeared in 1919. Queenie finds something in one of the 1919 witches' journals referencing him and saying it ends tonight.
Zoe wants to contact him again to find Madison, but Queenie and Nan don't want to risk letting him free.
Zoe sits down again at the board alone, promising to let him go if he tells her where Madison is. The board spells out "attic." Nan goes up to Spaulding's creepy doll-filled lair, which reeks. She opens the trunk and sees Madison dead, and slowly decaying inside. Spauling grabs her from behind and clamps his hand over her mouth.
Cordelia comes home from the hospital. When Hank touches her arm, she sees the redhead and asks who it is. "I had to go blind to see things about you, an absolute cosmic joke," she says.
"You will be accountable for every single betrayal, no matter how deep you think your secrets are buried. Now get out!" she yells.
After he slinks away, Cordelia touches Fiona and sees her "Auntie Myrtle" burning at the stake. Fiona doesn't believe Myrtle did it.
Nan, Zoe, and Queenie interrogate Spauling, with Nan reading this thoughts. (Zoe easily got free by whacking him with a doll.) Zoe burns him with a metal spatula to get him to "talk." He "says" he killed Madison because he's "a man of uniquely developed appetites." He points out they can't exactly turn him in to the authorities.
Queenie burns herself to burn him and he passes out. Zoe isn't sure he did it -- he grew up in a house of witches and knows how to keep secrets.
Out in Misty Day's swamp camp, she waters buried Myrtle in her magic swamp mud.
Kyle startles her. He doesn't look so good. She puts him in a metal tub to bathe him. He freaks out thinking about his mom abusing him and goes on a rampage in her cabin. She tries to calm him until he trashes her tape player, with its constant loop of Fleetwood Mac.
Zoe arrives. She needs Misty's help.
Hank goes to see Marie Laveau, whom he apparently knows. "We've got a problem," he tells her.
Zoe chains Kyle up in Cordelia's greenhouse for his own good. She shows Misty to Madison's corpse and asks what can be done. "I can help you dig a hole," Misty says, saying Madison is too far gone.
Zoe convinces her. Misty needs Zoe's help to get the death out. They push on her stomach and Madison sits up screaming. Then she collects herself. "I need a cigarette," Madison says.
Hank tells Marie she made his job more difficult. Marie denies having anything to do with the acid attack on Cordelia. "You think I did that? I look like the Taliban to you?" she says.
It comes out that he's a witch hunter, getting him all the Salem descendants.
Flash back to Cordelia meet with Kaylee, who's considering coming to the Academy. She's been charged with arson, twice. We see Kayle's fiancé trying to leave her, and her lighting his hands on fire as he goes for the door. Cordelia tries to convince her to come to the Academy.
Hank has gotten nine descendants in three years, five of which he found through Cordelia's research. Marie accuses him of falling in love with Cordelia. She angry that her enemies are acting up more than ever. She orders him to bring her the heads of all the witches, Fiona, Cordelia, all of them, then burn the house to the ground.
Back at the Academy, Zoe plans to keep resurrected Madison from Fiona. She invites Misty to stay the night, but Misty thinks there's something foul in the house.
Late at night, Cordelia locks her door and feels her way around her room. She gets ready for bed, unable to see the Axeman standing at the foot of her bed, until he starts talking to her.
Madison slowly recovers from being dead. All she remembers from before she died is the color red.
The Axeman tells Cordelia what Zoe promised him, but he won't let her out of the room. She screams and the girls come running.
But Zoe goes downstairs to the book shelf, looking for a spell to send him along. She uses magic until the right book presents itself, then it flies open to the right page. She takes their hands and recites the spell.
Cordelia is left alone.
The Axeman picks up his axe and walks out of the gates of the Academy, into the New Orleans night.
Fiona drinks alone at a bar, listening to jazz. She's horrified when some of her hair falls out. The Axeman sits down next to her.
