The Pilot's Love Song.
Tweekums7 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Set on the flying island of Isla, this film follows student Kal-el Albus and his classmates as they encounter dangers on the way to "The End of the Sky". We also learn about his past; was wasn't always Kal-el Albus; he used to be Prince Karl La Hire until a revolution swept through his country and left the rest of his family dead. The figurehead of the revolution was a young girl called Nina Viento and Kal is determined that one day he will get his revenge on her. What he doesn't realise is that she also has another name; Claire Cruz… and not only is she in his class he is developing feelings for her!

The plot of this series manages to be both far-fetched and a little cliché but it is still reasonably entertaining; especially during the aerial combat scenes which are most impressive… it is just a shame the story wasn't so great. It focuses too much on the social differences on Isla and fails to explain adequately why they were attacked; I can only assume some important content from the original light novels was removed to make the thirteen episode anime. The characters were fairly standard; the idea of young pilots caught up in a war has been done before and better; in 'Last Exile' for example. There is also a lack of a proper ending; in fact the ending felt like the set up for another season… perhaps that will be made one day. Overall I'd say this series wasn't bad; it is just a pity it wasn't better; it certainly felt like it could have been.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.
