Could have been better...
Shane31824 March 2014
That was not quite what I was expecting out of this episode. When I hear "Ghostfacers" I think of hilarity and hijinks that follow closely behind them. We've seen the Ghostfacers, Ed and Harry, in the show before in the episodes "Hell House" and "Ghostfacers" and I was excited to see them return because I was sure it would be an amusing episode, which is something we haven't had in a very long time. I was wrong about several things. One, there was little to no hilarity in this episode other than Ed and Harry being a bit quirky, and two, Ed and Harry are not like the ghostfacers we've watched in the past.

This episode starts off with a young teenage girl at home alone, taking photos of herself in her room, when suddenly a faceless monster appears in her room and kills her. As the title suggests, and because it is revealed shortly after, this monster could be the so-called "Thinman," and it is not difficult to made the connection between this tall, suited, faceless monster and the popular internet-born monster known as Slenderman. Honestly, I think the case was the best thing this episode had going for it. I was drawn in pretty quickly by the creepy monster and was really hoping for the rest of the episode to be frightening. Unfortunately, there were only a couple scenes that I would consider to be scary, but despite that I was still intrigued by the case for a while.

This episode, however, seemed to focus less on Thinman and more on Ed and Harry, as well as Sam and Dean. Should be fun, right? Hilarious ghostfacers paired up with the Winchesters again! Not so much. This is where I personally think the episode was failing, and that was trying to make Ed and Harry's struggling friendship believable. Yes, Ed and Harry are going through some tough times, and while that would probably be fine for the episode, the blatant use of parallels between the ghostfacers struggles and Sam and Dean become almost obnoxious.

We know that Sam and Dean are having some problems, and they haven't been communicating very well, so the writer of this episode (Jenny Klein) was clearly trying to have Sam and Dean's problems transfer right over to Ed and Harry. So instead of the ghostfacers being comical idiots, we have Ed and Harry lying to each other, fighting with each other and unwilling to come to a compromise. Who does this sound like? Obviously Sam and Dean. Who does this NOT sound like? The Ghostfacers. I've already watched an entire season of Sam and Dean arguing and lying to each other, I didn't watch this episode wanting to see it happen all over again with the two (arguably) funniest duo in the show.

In terms of the case itself, I'd say the episode was decent and worth watching. When it came to the characters though, I was not impressed with how they were written. They could have done so much with the Ghostfacers' return, and I'm a bit disappointed that this is what they chose to do with them. All in all though, it was an okay episode.

Underated Gem
caleb-9696924 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Truthfully this episode wasn't nearly as bad as everyone says. While it may not factor into the plot of the whole season, but it ties up a loose end. It goes back to the whole essence of what supernatural is. It shows really strong characters that drive the plot along with Sam and Dean.

Overall while I did think that the episode could be better, I thought it was a nice tie up to the whole GhostFacers story line. It ended it very nice and smooth and I liked that.

Long story short, this episode isn't for everyone, it's either you like it or you don't. To me, it's an underated gem and I give it a 8/10

Ghostfacers meets Scream 2.
mm-395 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Ghostfacers meets Scream 2. Ghostfacers one member creates Thinman in order to manipulate the other member into staying with him. Just like the Sam and Dean drama. The director even has the two minor characters dress similar! Good intentions versus manipulation argument. Thinman turns sour just like Dean's plan. The Thinman investigation turns into a version of Scream 2 where the Winchesters have two psychopaths to deal with. Dean's line "where did you two meet Whackjob.com." was the best line of the night. The two sub-stories mix well together for an excellent ending. Both generations of characters have the same problems. Well written and direct. Seven out of ten. However. the series is running out of ideas.

Meh

Warning: Spoilers
It was nice to see the Ghostfacers again, but did they really have to do a parody of Slender man? That's the main reason I gave this episode a 7. The overall concept fell short. Did Ed and Harry really have to have a failing out? Everyone is miserable this season. I would like a lighthearted episode please.

Best case in ages and ghostfacers
shwetafabm30 June 2020
The case was completely intriguing When i first watched this 5 years ago i was honestly extremely disappointed, to the point i was done with this show. Ghostfacers are such a great great nook in spn, the best part of a long running series is these sort of characters. I hated that they ruined it but 5 years later i really liked the episode and how dark and mysterious it was. I wanted funny but that's not what we got and i was disappointed but it is very good for what it is. The parallels at times are completely annoying and cringey, even that fish taco wellness spa had a sibling relationship in the center, a lot of eps do this. Ed and harry's was perhaps the most focused and paralleled. While a felt it was too much i think it was good and fit. It wasn't as dark in its tone and direction as it would have been in the first few seasons is one of my complaints. They would have made the atmosphere creepier

Not Supernatural?
danajs2413 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
These ghostfacers need to go. It bugs me they don't take Sam and Dean seriously, and I wish they'd eventually get the danger they're in. Just bugs me a bit. If someone is going to not take Sam and Dean seriously, then they eventually do (demons, angels, all monsters in general), but not these idiots. Also, there wasn't even a supernatural being in this one? That's not cool. Shame on you writers. I did sort of like the slenderman nod, but not if there wasn't an actually slenderman. This has to be the end of the ghostfacers, as they seemed to be in quite the fight due to the deceit. One can only hope I suppose. Again, any episode that isn't the main story line doesn't seem to be doing very well, and I wish they would plan out episodes like these to at least have some of the story line involved.

Did Carver forget that the show is allowed to be funny?
CubsandCulture21 September 2020
This is the second time this season that the writers forced comedic characters into a more serious situation. They tried this in "Sharp Teeth" with Garth to poor results and it is even worse here. Ed and Harry-from the first episode they have been in and in every besides this one-are comedic goofballs. They are-at best-parodies of Sam and Dean. When the writers have injected anything serious involving the Ghostfacers it was never related to the main chunk of the season-I.e. Corbett. And yet here the writers try and fail to turn Ed-Harry into a cautionary tale about Sam and Dean. It does not work.

The main reason for this is the Ghostfacers are still largely written as comedic side characters. All the exposition to get the metaphor up and running is very clunky-or worse unbelievable without the supporting text shown. (When and where exactly did find a girlfriend?) Add in that this is the final episode for these characters-their story ends on such a sour note!-a it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Which is too bad because the parody of memes, slenderman, internet culture really works and it is one of the few times that human villains fit with the show. This could have been a great follow-up to Ghostfacers (Season 3 Episode 13). Instead it is a grating episode that does not cohere with the prior material.

Great Beginning Without a Compelling Storyline
klhamera5 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
First, I'd like to start by saying this is my first review and it may contain possible spoilers. I never was a big fan of the Ghostfacers idea. I always felt like they were there to be filler, and this episode proved me right. I also feel like this show started going downhill around season 6 or so. With the murder in the beginning of this episode it peaked my interest for the first time in awhile, and I had hoped it would bring back what made it so addicting in the first few seasons. Then I saw the Ghostfacers and it became clear that they're supposed to parallel Sam and Dean and the problems that have been plaguing them, and frankly, it's been overdone. Sam plays games and whines and Dean acts like a self righteous jerk only looking out for himself. I do not like the development of the characters anymore, and that may just be a personal preference. About the episode: it was weak. Very weak. I didn't like the route they took with the monster and

*SPOILER*

his accomplice and identity. The criminal and plot were clichéd, mainly because it was centered around petty revenge, and (like always) the idiot bad guys left the heroes alone giving them the chance to escape while they left to deal with the lesser threat. There's no reason they couldn't have killed Dean and then left to deal with whatever made the noise. They could have done so much more, and I feel the point of this episode was to just make the audience see that Sam and Dean know they have issues and don't want to end up like the Ghostfacers did when the episode was done. And, I feel if the Ghostfacers should had worn shirts that said "I'm portraying Sam/Dean" respectively, it would be equal to the amount of subtlety these Ghostfacers characters gave off.

Worst since Season 7
SerenityStone6 March 2021
Man, this episode was noticeable terrible. The acting SUCKED (not from the boys of course), the direction was weird, the story was awful. Can be skipped and not a single thing would be missed from the overarching story, except for a VERY forced parallel between the Ghostfacer's drama and the tension between Sam and Dean.
