Surprisingly Fun
chrismackey19728 September 2014
I know what you're thinking. A movie about a killer mermaid, so it has to suck. That's the attitude I had when I sat down to watch this movie. However, it was very well done for what it was. They did a serious job on this film. The acting was pretty good, as was the story and the special effects. They spent about 30 mins of a 90 minute movie with character development, which is fine, because it made you at least get to know some of the characters. I'd recommend this movie, as long as you know it's not a blockbuster film. All I need is for a movie to be entertaining, and I thought that's what it was. I didn't look at my watch waiting for the movie to end. It was well done.

I gave this film a 5-star rating because I really enjoyed it, and it was sooooo much better than I thought it would be. I thought this was going to be some stupid movie like Piranha 3DD or Varsity Blood. However, as I said, it was done in a serious way, and the people in this could act.

OK if you don't expect too much.
Patient4447 September 2014
Surprisingly enough, it was a decent movie after all. The plot is kinda used, same for the action development but all in all a decent attempt at a horror movie that did not rely so much on gore or nudity. I said it did not rely THAT much, but those 2 trade marks will make their appearances here and there.

So, if you are too bored, nothing to do, and it is quite late, this is not the worse way to pass the time. The beginning looks very cheap and dumb, but it gets better with time. Once you see the "nymph" itself, you realize that they might have been saving for the design of the creature, explaining why the deaths are so weak and dull. Very few things I can think of to pass on, in the end, I suggest you just give it a try, cause you can do a lot worse than this one.

Nymph, a movie that almost got a grade of 5 from me, but ultimately, I strongly believe it will be a 4.2-4.4 tops. Not bad, but nothing out of the ordinary either, a simple production, that you might find yourself talking one time. Who knows...

Cheers!

This sea creature movie starts out decent but ends with a belly flop
Seth_Rogue_One7 May 2015
For a movie called "Killer Mermaid" this has surprisingly very little mermaid action in it, it takes an hour before the promised killer mermaid action actually starts (unless you count the beginning teaser).

In the first 30 minutes or so it still kept my interest a bit, a lot having to do with the beautiful Serbia Monetenegro landscape that I haven't really seen in a movie before.

The characters also feels a little more three-dimensional than the usual 2d stereotypes that cheap creature features like this usually offers.

Not that any of the characters are all that interesting tho and once the action does start in the second half the clichés starts piling up.

The acting is okay although the accents get a little distracting from time to time and make the dialog sound unnatural for most of the cast.

It's not the worst movie I've seen or anything but it's not particularly good either, if you're looking for a mermaid horror movie I suggest SHE CREATURE (2001) instead.

Moderately successful effort
Shadowplayed12 September 2014
To be perfectly honest, I had some fun with this.

Like others have said, if you don't expect much, you might find it enjoyable. And, it's not hard to keep the expectations realistic after director's debut, Zone of The dead. This film is a step up.

The locations are fantastic, paired with intriguing premise, what can go wrong? Well, let's see....

Acting is questionable, characters paper thin, story rushed and what we do learn about them doesn't keep us exactly rooting for this bunch. The film starts out in least promising way possible, cliché one liners, atrocious acting from most members of the cast (Kristina Klebe, Franco Nero and D. Micanovic excluded) and awful, cheap music to go along with holiday mood.

After initial half hour or so which does test one's patience, Mamula indeed gets off the ground, meaning we finally start getting a taste of some action, essential for projects like this. Thanks to ideal setting (island of Mamula on Adriatic sea; former military base) and some gory fx, the pain of enduring uninspired talk and "character development" is finally paying off. Some generic slasher kills, chasing through the maze of corridors...all's good, but, where's the Mermaid?!

Nymph is the strongest thing this film has going for it, location aside. And, indeed when she does finally appear I was ready to forget all the shortcomings. Could have watched her go all day long, nice make up/fx work there with pinch of bad CGI, but having relatively humble resources in mind, that is really not that big a deal. Although, I could have used a bit more daring approach, the Mermaid should have gotten more screen time doing her "thing", imo.

One of the surprises was Dragan Micanovic, in a role that's atypical for him, he handled the perky, jokey and lively Boban pretty well. Nero shows that he's still got it/with admirable screen presence against the pale bunch; and calm, assertive Klebe takes her role seriously. Overall, not the worst way to spend hour and a half, if nothing, to soak up the natural beauty of the setting with occasional horror action thrown into the mix.

The spoiler-laden rant I sent my husband after watching.
BethLovesAlex19 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
When a movie is called "Killer Mermaid," I think maybe the deadliness of the mermaid should be one of the core values of the movie. Sure, enchanting men to murder for you is quite lethal, but this isn't "Dangerous Mermaid" or the far more appropriate "Lazy Mermaid Who Won't Go Hunt For Herself." Even the cover is misleading -- that of a mermaid approaching a swimmer in shallow tropical sunny water, whereas no one actually went in the water until the last ten minutes and by that point it was night and swimming was, by necessity of not wanting to get eaten, brief. Up until that point, they basically just ran away from an old dude who fed his lady mermaid chopped up people parts.

Two and a half stars.

You Had Me At "Killer Mermaid"
gavin694213 February 2015
Two young American women go on a Mediterranean vacation and uncover the watery lair of a killer mermaid hidden beneath an abandoned military fortress. What was once a carefree adventure becomes a deadly fight for survival.

So, the film has gone through a few title changes: from "Mimula" to "Killer Mermaid" to "Nymph". The first one is the most accurate, other than that no one knows what that is. The second sounds like a SyFy film. The third is sort of close. Really ,they ended up with a mermaid mixed with a siren. What would that be called?

There is some great use of color, although the camera has an odd tendency to "float" rather than focus on the subjects. There is also some awkward English, but given that this is in Serbia, that really should be expected.

Anyway, not terrible, but it does not even come close to the original mermaid horror film: "Night Tide".

Pretty
kosmasp20 October 2014
That's the best I can say about the movie. It delivers every cliché in the book and there are lines of dialog, that were openly laughed at, at the Screening at Frightfest. While director and stars are invited I always feel sort of bad for them, but it wasn't an issue at the Q&A afterwards, which was a good thing.

The actors are all pretty, but some struggle with their lines (especially those whose first language isn't English!). Franco Nero might seem like a lighthouse, but considering the demands he made to be in the movie, it might have been better, if he actually wasn't. He brings some sort of gravitas, but he has some speeches that feel endless and stop the movie entirely. Not that it was up and running in high speed, but still.

There is some nudity and blood to satisfy those needs, but it does not help make this a fun movie. While the poster (english title "Nymph"), promised something entertaining, it couldn't deliver in the way "Zombeaver" did ...

... Of Mermaids and abandoned Nazi islands
Coventry11 April 2014
Apparently not all horror efforts that come from Eastern Europe are as sickening, depraved and provocative as the notorious "A Serbian Film", because this particular Serbian film attempts to process a traditional folklore tale into a genuinely tense and atmospheric little horror movie. Unfortunately I can't state they fully succeeded in their aim, but at least you have to admire their efforts and admit that "Nymph" nevertheless contains quite a lot potential and even features a handful of memorable highlights. Truly tense and stylish movies about the wondrous subject of evil mermaids are extremely rare, so I had good hopes that "Nymph" – original Serbian title "Mamula" - could join the selected list that already contains Stuart Gordon's underrated "Dagon" and the regretfully obscure Swiss thriller "Marmorera". Sadly this is not the case, as the film contains too many tedious moments and not enough emphasis on the morbidity and macabre atmosphere that a mythical tale like this desperately begs for. Two American girls embark on a joyful vacation to Montenegro, where they meet their former university buddy and bona fide playboy Alex. There are quite some romantic intrigues, since Alex forgot to mention he got engaged recently and unexpectedly shows up with his fiancée, but the group nevertheless tries to have fun and make adventurous tourist excursions. They head out to Mamula, a former prison island and Nazi concentration camp that nowadays apparently homes a totally different type of horrendous evil. They witness a sinister fisherman pouring a bucket of human remains in a well and immediately realize they are in mortal danger. The background and origin of the mermaid creature, mainly provided by one central character, is confusing and feels somewhat incomplete and I'm convinced that a slightly more experienced scriptwriter easily could have done a lot more with the mermaid character, as well as with the character of her human slave. On the other hand, the creature looks stunningly charismatic and impressive, with her large tail and cute face that mutates into a monstrous mug in less than a split second. There are more positive aspects in "Nymph" as well, like beautiful filming locations and a glorious supportive role for a true cinematic hero (see below paragraph), but in spite of all this I left the theater with feelings of mainly disappointment and emptiness.

As referred to already, "Nymph" remarkably stars a true icon of cult cinema. Somehow, the young and reasonably inexperienced director Milan Todorovic managed to engage none other than the legendary Franco Nero to star as a mysterious fisherman and expert in the field of Mediterranean mermaids! This is praiseworthy, to say the least, as the production is fairly low-budgeted and not suitable for worldwide release. Moreover, yours truly had the privilege to meet Franco Nero in person, as he accompanied the director and producer to the world premiere of "Nymph" at the Brussels International Festival of Fantastic Films. Here, Nero explained that he's really supportive of young and struggling directors (as his own son is also one) and likes to boost up their movies by appearing in them. Furthermore, Mr. Nero sang a song of the sixties musical "Camelot" in which he starred (quite beautifully, I may add) and had very amiable interactions with the public. At age 72, I must say that he still looks charismatic as ever and – according to my girlfriend – he's still a very handsome and imposing gentleman.

Not what I was expecting!!
neon-knightttt23 February 2015
This film is rated 4.3 stars out of 10 and because of the low rating I was not expecting anything more than a cheaply done soft core half ass attempt at a horror movie. Well folks I've seen far worse rated at 7 stars and at this point I am putting far less faith in the ratings here or anywhere else. This flick is no blockbuster but it is definitely worth watching, it doesn't start out so hot but has a good horror story decent acting and it really picks up as it goes. This movie kinda reminds me of the old horror flicks with a heart touching ending we'd see at the drive in on weekends or midnight movie. As always I'm on the creature's side so I was rooting for the mermaid. LOL

Where is the Mermaid?
RobertLThorpe9 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
If you write a film called Killer Mermaid and 8 people die but only 1 and half due to a mermaid and you see the mermaid for LITERALLY 3 minutes of the film (no lie) you better show LOTS OF BOOBS. This film does neither.

It starts off promising with a great shot of a couple getting ready to do it. Boobs flying.. Great B move stuff. Then, No boobs or mermaid until the very end of the film and that is not even the central ending. Its a B story ending. That is why this film sucks. Like Godzilla, if you calla film by a type of creature and don't ever put the creature in the film, its gonna suck unless you have boobs. Godzilla sucked, this film sucks.

Does what it says on the fantasy horror tin
amesmonde11 September 2014
On a picturesque holiday a group of old old and new friends take a trip to an off limit island and find something thought to be of only fantasy.

With a skimpy dressed cast in amongst the nice scenery and locations there's blood filled impalement, beheading, hacking, stabbings and a creepy Mermaid. Nymph is a strong horror entry especially during it's atmospheric night segments as men are enticed by the sounds of the mermaid. The interesting aged Montenegero locations add a different look and feel to the proceedings. At times reminiscent of Dagon, to director Milan Todorovic's credit it sets the scene with an early killing, then builds up to a claret finale while taking a leaf out of Jaws (1975) book by keeping the 'monster' unseen until the final act.

Played straight, the actress Zorana Kostic Obradovic and Mina Sablic's mermaid steal the show, second to Miodrag Krstovic, a Castro lookalike protagonist and of course there's Franco Nero in a fitting role as Niko- an old salty sea dog amongst the easy on the eye cast including the notable Natalie Burn, Sofija Rajovic and Kristina Klebe. Yes some cast members sometimes struggle with the English dialogue, accents and the editing and pacing at times is a little off but it adds to the quirky off beat charm that Nymph/Mamula/Killer Mermaid posses.

Overall, this Euro part horror mystery, part slasher flick and campfire tale does what it says on the fantasy horror tin. Entertaining.

Fun and atmospheric haunted house movie
drewdle0130 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Nymph (aka Mamula) by young filmmaker Milan Todorovic is a fun, haunted house romp that I thoroughly enjoyed. As noted by another reviewer here - Todorovic manages to pack atmosphere, scares, and intrigue into his film while avoiding the recent trend in horror films towards torture porn. That's not to say that Nymph is without its gritty thrills - there is plenty of bloody, scary fun and lovely skin to be seen here. However, Todorovic simply chooses to tell his story without punishing his audience.

At the center of the story are three gorgeous, young women (Kristina Klebe, Natalie Burn, and Sofia Rajovic) they each bring believable insecurities and vulnerabilities to their roles while rarely seeming weak.

I should also mention one of my favorite facets of Nymph - the locations. This is a part of the world that we Westerners don't often see. The fort that our characters find themselves on is an imposing structure in the middle of a beautiful ocean (or is it a bay?). It must have been no small feat to film in such a place. The history of this fort (as explained by a character in the film) is real - this place is like an Eastern Alcatraz with more ghosts roaming it's halls.

If you prefer take your horror with a dose of fun, see Nymph.

IT'S RUDE TO STARE YOU KNOW
nogodnomasters13 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Two American babes vacation in Montenegro. Lucy (Natalie Burn in a small bikini) is expecting to hook up with her ex (Slobodan Stefanovic) after seven years, but he shows up with his fiancee (Sofija Rajovic) and they are later joined by Bob (Dragan Micanovic) who likes the other babe Kelly (Kristina Klebe). We get to know the individuals in a way that will tie into the story.

After lengthy introductions our five-some are off to an island once controlled by the Nazis and are warned by a Captain Ahab looking guy not to go. He tells a great story in the beginning and bored me at the end with a far too lengthy explanation. The film has done okay with the bells and whistles one would expect for this type of film. Unfortunately the dialogue and characters were hit and miss. At times it just seemed like they were going through the motions because this is what a horror film should do.

Guide: Nudity (Jelena Rakocevic, Zorana Kostic Obradovic ? ) No sex or f-bombs.

Uh-Oh
gradyharp7 September 2014
This little film from Serbia directed by Milan Todorovic is based on a story by Marko Backovic and transformed into a screenplay by Barry Keating and Milan Konjevic. It will satisfy the current voracious appetite for horror stories that serve substantial amounts of gore to audiences who love that sort of thing. With an unknown cast the director relies on the presence of Franco Nero to bring a bit of credibility to an otherwise incredulous story.

Two American girls travel to Montenegro on vacation to visit an old friend, playboy Alex who unbeknownst to the girls is now engaged. They decide to venture to Mamula, a former prison island and Nazi concentration camp that houses a horrendous evil. During their exploration of the fortress they discover that they are not alone: a sinister fisherman named Niko (Franco Nero) is seen disposing of human remains in a well and everyone realizes they are in mortal danger. Someone else is on the island with them and he will stop at nothing to protect it's secrets. There is a darkness hidden beneath the island and the terror has just begun – the killer mermaid.

As if there weren't enough of this type of tale on television for free they continue to light up the marquee. As long as there is an audience there will be more. In Serbian and English with subtitles. Grady Harp, September 14

Tedious and totally lacklustre horror
Groverdox28 September 2020
"Killer Mermaid", also known as "Nymph", is a dire, tedious movie. It has very little in the way of plot, no characters that make any impression, nor any actors that do so. The violence is minimal, there's only one scene of nudity, and basically no reason to watch.

I was just waiting for it to end, and perhaps the best thing I can say about the movie is that yes, it does end. It doesn't go on forever, although it might seem like that.

Pretty Boring
carolynocean12 May 2021
I am open to watching most types of horror movies, They all deserve a chance.

But, I have to say that I found this one really boring .

The storyline was fairly silly , and the acting was not that good.

It had a very low budget feel to it, It felt like the actors were just delivering the lines, in a very amateur manner , probably because it was more about the " Beautiful People " , rather than the actual story itself !

It just took too long to get going , and by the time anything really happened , it was just all a bit anti climatic and flat !

Not one single scare here !

The only impressive thing here was the scenery !

What isn't bad is just plain boring. Hard pass.
I_Ailurophile22 October 2021
Dialogue is tawdry and annoying, including no few pointed references along the way. Plot is unremarkable and thin. Supporting characters are annoying and thin. Nudity is gratuitous and unnecessary, and the camera likewise lingers lasciviously and shamelessly on women's bodies. Scene writing is dubious, awkward, and embarrassing. The insertion of character background feels terribly forced and inorganic. At least the scenery looks nice.

Sure, I'm specifically describing the first 20 minutes of the movie. But you know what? It doesn't get any more convincing. To be honest, 'Killer mermaid' is a bit of a chore.

It's not the absolute worst movie I've ever seen. I at least kind of like Nikola Jeremic's score, even if it's over the top at times. But there's nothing about this that exceeds a level of quality any greater than "average." It's difficult to say that 'Killer mermaid' has tension and suspense to impart when the narrative is so entirely unremarkable, and ordinary. Sparing minor details are all that distinguish this film from many others of comparable pablum, but those small details do nothing to save what we're watching, let alone improve it. And amidst all this stunning mediocrity, it's impossible to meaningfully assess the cast's performances - they could actually very well be good actors, but we'll never know from features like this that so completely, inherently diminish the players' value.

With half an hour left in the runtime I was utterly bored. I kept watching out of a masochistic sense of obligation to finish what I had started, but there was simply no worth to be found. I suppose it's true that there are yet still worse movies you could subject yourself to, but as it is this picture places us so low in the depths of cinematic tedium that diving further could be considered medically inadvisable. Even the climax is rendered wholly inert.

A small part of me feels bad being so critical; a lot of work goes into making any movie. But if you're going to put in the effort, why not make sure that it counts? What isn't poorly written or executed in 'Killer mermaids' is simply stale and uninteresting, and this very plainly isn't deserving of your time.

Two-thirds of the movie had no mermaids...
paul_haakonsen21 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Initially I must admit that the idea of killer mermaids seems a bit interesting, especially if you are familiar with the myth about the nymphs and sirens. I like that myth and concept, so of course this movie had some appeal to me. However, it was with absolutely no expectations to the movie that I sat down to watch it.

Now, the movie starts out rather alright with some deaths very early on, but leaves you with a question about why this would be about mermaids. Then the movie settles into a little bit too comfortable pace in itself, it would seem, and it loses momentum and becomes somewhat mundane and mediocre. The movie does pick up some pace again once the people get out to the Island, but even then it is still rather slow paced and bland.

Director Milan Todorovic spend a little bit too much time on filming and showing rather pointless stuff, such as an extended dance scene for example, which served no purpose for the movie, and could essentially have been cut down tremendously in time and still accomplish the exact same thing.

I wasn't familiar with anyone one the cast list, and I do like watching new actors and actresses on the screen, because there is no association to them to previously portrayed characters and roles. People in this movie were actually doing quite good jobs with their characters and roles. So thumbs up on that accomplishment.

I have seen three different titles for this very same movie, "Mamula", "Nymph" and "Killer Mermaids", depending on where in the world you find the movie.

The special effects in the movie were actually quite alright, although the movie was fairly sparse in displaying and making use of special effects. For better or worse, that is a matter of personal preference, of course.

"Mamula" turned out to be something quite different than what I had anticipated after having read the synopsis for the movie. I can't say that I was positively surprised with the outcome of the movie, because it was just a very bland and mediocre foray into the horror genre. And it was very wrongly advertised, because the mermaid was hardly a focal point to the story and wasn't even present for most of the movie. In fact the movie would be better advertised with a title like "Fisherman's Frenzy", as most of the killing was done by that guy.

All in all, then "Mamula" was somewhat of a disappointment, and it turned out to be a mediocre movie, even for a horror movie.

Double trouble
unbrokenmetal31 August 2014
Two American girls on vacation at the Adriatic Sea go by boat to a mysterious island, accompanied by three local friends, although an old man warned them it's a dark place with a bloody history. First person they meet on the island is a serial killer, chopping up bodies for a 'killer mermaid', as the title of the international distribution already told us. The 5 young people now have to get away from the island, but the killer is stalking them on the land - and the mermaid is lurking in the waters...

The film boasts with a perfect location. Normally the movie script is written first, then a suitable location is chosen. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the other way around here: someone saw this location and then came up with a story that fits, maybe? Anyway, the movie itself is a typical horror flick with screaming young people in scary dark places. Why men are so enchanted with the mermaid is poorly explained, the audience don't see the magic work here. The location, the unusual choice of a mermaid as the monster and some good performances (Franco Nero, Dragan Micanovic) lift this movie above average and make it worthwhile watching, still.

I Know What You Did Under The Sea......

Warning: Spoilers
Two American girls on vacation visit an old friend in Montenegro.

While there, they decide to venture to an abandoned military fortress located on a remote island.

During their time on the fortress they discover that someone else is on the island with them and he will stop at nothing to protect it's secrets.

There is a something hidden beneath the island and it's not Aerial....

Just what the world wanted, a hybrid of IKWYDLS mixed with the myth of the mermaid. But if your looking for lots of killer mermaid action like the cover suggests, skip to the last ten minutes, and then prepare to be disappointed.

If you are looking for a film featuring deplorable characters where the males are seduced by song, and two old men hold a grudge for each other, whilst being chased around an old building, this is for you.

Never has a film been more deceptive with it's actual plot than this. We get a few kills with a harpoon type weapon, Django in a fisherman's cloak warning the group in the best Scooby Doo reference i've seen since Wayne's World.

It's a pretty tepid affair, the acting is below par, and other than Nero actually making an effort with the terrible script, there really is nothing worth mentioning.

Unless you really like to be deceived.

Killer Horror!
LiamBlackburn13 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
As soon as they said the island was called Mamula I said that should have been the title of the movie. In fact, it was the original title, they should've left it. Instead they clearly thought it would be too Euro-sounding so they called it Nymph. Nymph is such a boring title that must have been used already a hundred times. Anyway, this movie is hilarious lol. The best character is the ominous old fisherman who has a great monologue detailing the history of the evil island. This movie is pure jokes, I'm sure they were having a laugh along with me. The abundance of massive rolling screenshots give the movie an epic feeling. As the movie progresses, you start to feel like you're slowly descending deeper and deeper into a hellish abyss of evil! It showcases the beauty of the southern European peninsulas. When you think of Yugoslavia, you never think of pristine waters and little harbour villages. This is a true horror movie in classic horror style. Good job.

Does Not Go Swimmingly
scythertitus1 September 2017
There are some positives about this movie, but they mostly stop at the eye-candy on display, and the general killing by a mermaid, if you are into that sort of thing. But even these things are tame and toned down rather than being an over-exaggerated cheesefest like Sharknight or Piranha 3DD.

I think this toned down approach might have been why the alternative title is Nymph, which sounds about as wimpy and lacking in substance as the movie actually was. There could be some good sides to this movie but it seems like most of the character stuff they set up never really pays off and there is way too much unnecessary messing about before the actual mermaid appears. Sometimes this can work since you actually care about the characters and feel peril when they are in danger, but here it is wasted and some characters are even killed off-screen. Terrible.

Overall this movie could have been good if they had doubled down on characterisation, effects, cheesiness or picked any certain direction in general really. Instead it kind of flirts with being serious, flirts with being campy, and in the end just turns out to be one big disappointment.

Truly dreadful.
rocknrelics1 October 2020
Just because technology has made it possible and affordable to make a movie, doesn't mean everyone should.

Case in point 'Killer Mermaids', truly one of the worst films I have ever watched.

Like a cross between an episode of the worst reality show you can imagine, and an old softcore porno, this just totally stinks to high heaven, and if anyone told these 'actors', they can act, they've been lying to them.

No redeeeming features whatsoever.

Low rent indeed
Leofwine_draca12 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
KILLER MERMAIDS is a low rent and scuzzily digital horror from Serbia, of all places, shot in sunny Montenegro. The plot is a lightweight piece of fluff about a couple of American tourists who arrive on a remote island only to discover that the legend of a killer mermaid is very much real. There's only one mermaid here and she's a little seen, poor CGI-looking creation; endless attempts at atmosphere building and suspense fall flat, and the horror is non existent. Add in the bad acting and poor production values and you have a real dud of a film, only lifted by the presence of Italian superstar Franco Nero in a supporting role.
