The suspects include the victim's much younger husband, Madame Fleuri and her sister Renee, seamstress Violet who dreams of her own line, and house model Genevieve, but Violet is later found dead. At a spa to catch up on local gossip, Phryne and the police uncover a string of jewel thefts in Melbourne and Sydney. As trap, Phryne hints at Fleuri's she will be away for the weekend, leaving her expensive emerald necklace at home, actually awaiting with Jack Robinson the murderous robber: Genevieve, the House model and not French at all, who sends stolen jewels hidden in frock decoration to France, to prevent discovery at resale in Australia.
