Technically beautiful but too artsy and lacking strong plot

We Are, Human, After All is a short with an interesting premise but it is sadly weakened by a plot that fails to deliver in the end.

In this film we are quickly introduced to our protagonists who all speak different languages. The acting by Sandra Yi Sencindiver (The Woman) is pretty good, as is the voice acting by Jonathan Hutchings, but the performances by Youssef Wayne Hvidtfeldt and Klaus Pedersen are less impressive.

What stands out most in this short is the cinematography and sound. The sound is very nicely done with underplayed music setting the mood. In this case less really is more! Also the cinematography is pretty good; almost every scene is another beauty to behold. Dutch angles are used extensively throughout for unsettling effect I guess, but it got to be a bit too much for my taste.

The story is decent but there a several moments that seem strange, like for example when a German and an Arab are able to converse in their respective languages with absolutely no difficulty. There are some sexual undertones in this film, but I can't quite put my finger on whether it is intentional or not - it certainly looks intentional, but I don't see how it adds to the story.

If I wanted to nitpick, I would point out that they used a wrong signal for the civil defense siren. They used what sounded like "Indoor Protection" when it should clearly have been "Gas Proof Protection", but that is a minor error.

The "artsy-ness" of this movie is sort of comparable to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey in the sense that we spend a long time watching people do absolutely nothing reminiscent of the - in my opinion - horrible monkey sequence in Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi epic. I found the ending to be dissatisfying. I wish that it would have ended on a strong high note instead of a "why didn't they just?" but maybe there's some artsy stuff going on that I don't understand.

To summarize: A decent short that I would rate at just about average - 5/10.
