The Canadian Jubilee Singers were a professional vocal group pattered after the famous Fisk Jubilee Singers from Fisk University in Tennessee. They sang the same brand of African-American spirituals, but were mostly from the Hamilton area. William and Sadie Carter organized the group in 1878 .They toured Great Britain for five years and United States for three years. The group carried on until about 1907.
Ragtime music enjoyed peak popularity between 1895 and 1919 and was the first African-American music to have an impact on mainstream popular culture.
Ragtime music was originally spelled "ragged-time" after its syncopated rhythm.
