The results of the 21st Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards were announced earlier today, with Fruit Chan's surreal science fiction comedy thriller The Midnight After named as Best Film of 2014. Chan was also named Best Director, while Lau Ching Wan took the Best Actor award for Overheard 3, directed by Felix Chong and Alan Mak.Vicky Zhao Wei won Best Actress for her role in Peter Chan's Dearest, which also earned the Best Screenplay award for Zhang Ji, in a tie with Wai Ka Fai, Ryker Chan and Yu Xi for Don't Go Breaking My Heart 2, directed with Johnnie To.Every year the Hkfcs presents a list of 10 "recommended films" from the year's crop of domestic offerings. Dear Fern,
Many of the features you have told me about I have subsequently seen and very much like: Ferrara's tender, banal Pasolini (with a fantastic lead performance by Willem Dafoe, and, as you so justly pointed out, a truly moving homage with Ninetto Davoli), and the eccentric structural romantic comedy from Johnnie To, Don't Go Breaking My Heart 2. Two of the best films at Toronto, so far. Maybe I will return to these films later in the festival to tell you more of what I thought, but first somethings you may not have seen.
The much-anticipated shorts programs of the Wavelengths section wrapped up two nights ago and was presided over as always by indomitable programmer Andréa Picard—practically a cult figure in the festival world these days—who year after year has made it the most distinctive, the most personal, and the most engaged and engaging section at Tiff.

From the Toronto International Film Festival, Adam Cook and Daniel Kasman continue our series of festival dialogues. Johnnie To's Don't Go Breaking My Heart 2 had its world premiere in Tiff's Special Presentations section.
Adam Cook: Here we are again, talking To. It's frustrating how many times I've encountered a dismissive attitude towards Johnnie To's romantic comedies. I realize even the director himself disassociates from them, but, and especially with his most recent works, the rom-coms have been as formally intricate and as impressively crafted as his more revered crime films. As everyone was praising Drug War, it was Romancing in Thin Air that stood out for me. Before that there was Don't Go Breaking My Heart (written on here by Ignatiy Vishnevetsky), an impossibly entertaining love triangle in the big city movie, that while over the top and silly, had some of To's most impressive images...

★★★☆☆Whilst he may primarily be associated with the stylish Hong Kong gangster picks that have made him his name, director Johnnie To is not averse to turning his hand to lighter matters. Don't Go Breaking My Heart (2011) was one such offering - a likable romantic farce in a manic financial sector with stocks and affections traded with equal zeal. After the enormous success of that film, To has returned to the same stomping ground for the further adventures of the central trio in Don't Go Breaking My Heart 2 (2014). Taking the screwball shenanigans even further, it's unbridled fun that works despite the relationships themselves lacking any real depth below the moxie.

This morning the Toronto Film Festival added several more films to their lineup including the world premiere of Thomas McCarthy's The Cobbler which stars Adam Sandler as a New York City cobbler who, disenchanted with the grind of daily life, stumbles upon a magical heirloom that allows him to step into the lives of his customers and see the world in a new way. The film co-stars Method Man, Ellen Barkin, Melonie Diaz, Dan Stevens, Steve Buscemi and Dustin Hoffman. Additionally, Sundance standouts Infinity Polar Bear and Laggies starring Keira Knightley and Chloe Grace Moretz were added to the Gala selection. Joining The Cobbler as new additions to the Special Presentations field include Olivier Assayas' Clouds of Sils Maria starring Kristen Stewart and Juliette Binoche and Two Days, One Night from Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne and starring Marion Cotillard.
