A Mixed Bag of Emotional Depth and Missed Opportunities
duchii300322 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Mai" is Tran Thanh's bold and intentional effort to delve into the hidden corners of a sensitive profession in Vietnam. The story, filled with concealed and obscured aspects of the character, shows both the light and dark in shaping a person's character, aiming to evoke empathy and understanding from the audience. I'm quite dismissive of criticisms that dissect the film for this or that reason (male gaze); directors have their intentions, and their right to make money and achieve success is their own. Therefore, I'm content with what the director intends to convey.

Moving on to aspects I think could be improved or done differently: the music, dialogue, and character development.

One aspect to reconsider is the overuse of music. Dialogue meant to deepen character exploration is already scarce, and there are hardly any quiet moments without music. In some films, directors use silence to let the audience process their emotions when needed. The film seems not to give viewers enough space to reflect on the story's development, with music playing almost continuously and unnecessarily in many crucial scenes, diminishing the impact those moments could have.

After Mai discovers her best friend is her lover's mother and returns home, there's a scene where Mai, in a red dress, stands in front of a mirror, repeatedly wiping off her lipstick with music playing throughout. If redone, this scene could provide ample opportunity for Phuong Anh Dao to showcase her acting skills, even though her performance throughout the film is already impressive. But if this was Tran Thanh's intentional use of music, then there's really no room for debate (because I think I understand why he used so much music to keep the audience focused on the film, hm...)

Regarding character development, the film lacks depth and full character development. Characters are only partially explored, about 70 to 80%, preventing a thorough connection between the audience and the characters. This accentuates the absence of climaxes in the film, making the viewing experience less dramatic and thrilling. Too many events happen in Mai's life, yet they are somewhat disorderly, allowing viewers to see the overall tragedy of this girl's life, but the portrayal is uneven, the colors are incomplete, and it lacks polish.

The dialogue, an important element in character building and story progression, also fails to meet expectations. The conversations lack depth and persuasiveness, resembling a standard dialogue that doesn't truly resonate with the viewer. I believe many would agree with me that some dialogues in the film feel awkward. I understand Tran Thanh's expectation for the film to be as realistic and everyday as possible, but often, I found myself wondering, "Who talks like this in real life?" If it hangs between reality and cinema, it sounds odd, somewhat clumsy, and immature. Some well-crafted lines or dialogue segments have been praised enough, so I won't reiterate. It's not bad, but it could be much better. With actors from the theater stage like Ms. Hong Dao, the dialogue tends to be highly personal and incredibly engaging.

The film's conclusion is handled relatively well, successfully aiming to move the audience. The nameless emotions accumulated from start to end are released in a sigh of relief. This shows that, despite many areas needing improvement, Tran Thanh still has the ability to create memorable and meaningful moments (though it seems a bit abrupt..)

In "Mai," Phuong Anh Dao deserves the highest praise. Her performance truly stands out, delivering a genuine and emotional portrayal. With her deep expression of pain and resilience, Phuong Anh Dao excellently depicts Mai as a strong and memorable character. Whether showing sadness, anger, happiness, or through gestures and facial expressions, everything is very real (and my favorite scene is Mai fighting, it's so enjoyable)

Overall, "Mai" is a film worth watching and experiencing on the big screen despite its criticisms. It clearly demonstrates Tran Thanh's ambition and vision in crafting a story that portrays tragedy as realistically as possible. However, Tran Thanh is just a director, and no matter how skilled, it's challenging to oversee all aspects well and find a team of equal caliber to enhance the film's quality. I'm satisfied with the story the director wants to explore, just not with the way it was developed and what has been explored. So, fairly speaking, for a casual viewer like me, Mai is acceptable It's not the kind of movie to get all hyped up about, but definitely not one to bash either.

A top movie unfairly treated
quahuynh21 March 2024
I am being generous here, I think the movie sits somewhere between 7 and 8/10

To foreign friends who do not have the background: the director of this movie used to be an MC and comedian and he worked really hard to rise to the top face in Viet's show biz. Despite many past and ongoing controversies, what cannot be denied is his talents and hard work.

The movie starts with a intertwining scence where the Mai mopping her apt floor and her neighbor banging girls. I think it's a pretty good funny scene and a good sign of a quality movie.

Sure the dialogue is not as natural as you see foreign movies but it's a common problem with Vietnamese. We have.

A good movie (for Vietnamese)
nogiasx22 April 2024
The move has been hated by many Vietnamese who never watch it. The hate is from the boycott towards the director.

For me, I care about the movie, not the director's private life. I'm not his fan or anti-fan.

The movie worthed its cents. Good plot twists, great acting, informal dialogues, good scenes. However, the story is simple, opera soap like.

I rarely have chances to watch Vietnamese movies which are this good. I would say for every 10 Vietnamese movies, only 1 movie acquire this (or higher) quality.

Unfortunately, too many people rejected its value without watching the movie once.

Just my two cents.

Must see. Beautiful story
nodna-3766112 February 2024
This is a beautiful story about the character Mai's journey to find happiness. The character's psychology is portrayed deeply and complexly. The director gave us a deep dive into the character's psychology. This is not a simple romantic movie. This is a movie about life and happiness in every person. Although there are still many errors in the storytelling, this is a significant mark of Vietnamese films. From the film we can see the careful investment in content, images, script and message conveyed. The actors have devoted a lot to their roles. In short, this is a movie worth watching. An incredible cinematic mark from Tran Thanh.

Love knows no boundaries - it is eternal, like the blossoms "Mai" that adorn Vietnam's spring.

In the bustling streets of Vietnam, where tradition intertwines with modernity, "Mai" paints a poignant and visually stunning portrait of a single mother's quest for love amidst cultural intricacies. Directed by the visionary filmmaker Tran Thanh, this enchanting tale transcends borders, inviting audiences into a world where love blooms in unexpected places.

The film follows the journey of Mai, a devoted single mother navigating the complexities of Eastern Asian culture while yearning for companionship. Portrayed with grace and depth by the talented lead actress, Mai's character embodies resilience and hope as she embarks on a quest to find love against the backdrop of traditional values and societal expectations.

One of the most striking elements of "Mai" is its immersive portrayal of Vietnam. The meticulous attention to detail not only adds authenticity to the narrative but also serves as a window into the cultural nuances that influence the characters' choices and relationships.

At its core, "Mai" is a celebration of love in all its forms - romantic, familial, and self-discovery. Through heartfelt performances and evocative storytelling, the film explores the universal themes of longing, acceptance, and the transformative power of human connection. As Mai embarks on a journey of self-discovery, audiences are invited to reflect on their own experiences of love and belonging.

The best vietnamese movie in 2024
truongnguyensontunghe1 April 2024
I recently watched a movie that kept me on the edge of my seat with its surprises. At first, it seemed like a typical romantic film, but the movie Mai offered an authentic glimpse into Vietnamese life through cinema. What impressed me was the character of the mother-in-law, who, despite being a supporting character, used many psychological tricks to drive the plot forward. She not only pushed the story's climax in the second act but managed to do so again in the third and fourth acts. I highly recommend this movie to anyone looking for a great time at the theater. It would be primarily best to go with your family to understand more about your relatives.

Boffo Box office in Saigon...that's about it.
geowolff4 April 2024
Nicely shot, vigorously edited....scripted with a jackhammer....this is a soap opera on cinematic steroids.

Emotions run the range from high to extremely high. Plot twists runt the gamut from unbelievable to not credible.

I other words it's ALL over the top, surfing on a wave of high comedy and endless unexpected tragedies.

My only Vietnamese friend has had Viet soaps streaming on his shop TV for the 10 years I have known him. Okay, so maybe it's a cultural thing.

Bringing a nation out of ancient traditions and biases, colonialism, communism and war must be traumatic and confusing.

Absorbing western culture is not a cinematic tonic...it's a cheap emotional ride.

One note...the lead actress maintains her strong character and dignity stoically and that's probably the best thing about this potboiler.

V-Wood on the Rise!
tri73 April 2024
Unlike toandph I thought Mai was a very well made movie.

I thought the script was well written and the movie was well directed.

I'm amazed, in general, by how far Viet Nam has gotten in terms of artistry and music videos. We have came very far from the home made music videos to the short movie music videos that can compete compared to Korea and US. Mai is the first movie that follows that development.

Phuong Anh impersonated Mai tremendously in form of acting and maybe more so looks. She plays it like it was her autobiography. Cinematography, editing, and directing was on point for me also. I was taken aback by the one shot scenes, especially.

Altogether, I think Mai is very worth watching and I hope there's more to come from Viet Nam.

Average movie, nothing special. If you look at revenue and judge a good movie, you are wrong
dalathunter21 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The movie had high revenue because it occupied all the screenings during the 10 days of Tet in Vietnam. If you want to watch another movie, you have no choice.

Movie review Mai: Unfortunately, the movie "MAI" made me feel disappointed after watching it. Mai is a somewhat bad experience for me, the script has potential but the execution is bad, the dialogue is awkward, fake, moral but does not solve the problems in the film, the conflicts and problems in the film. The film cannot be resolved convincingly, the comedy is bland, it tries to make the audience laugh but fails personally. If I were to say plus points, it would be the excellence of Ms. Hong Dao, the neighbor's sister who speaks with a Northern accent, the film's color and soundtrack are rare plus points of the film.

Advice: Don't watch. The movie has high revenue but is not good. Disappointed.

Fantastic movie, must watch!
emithanh4 April 2024
This movie was so nostalgic and captivating. I cannot stop talking about it! The producers, directors, and cast all did an amazing job. The two leads had incredible chemistry. I felt so alive watching them fall in love-my heart fluttered, jumped, laughed, etc. This movie had the perfect ratio of comedy/ lightheartedness, without taking away from the main plot and storyline. It was definitely a constant tearjerker. I found myself crying of happiness and then of sadness minutes apart. It really did capture a lot of coming-of-age traumas and struggles that many individuals could relate to in some way. This movie was amazing, and I'm so proud to be Vietnamese.

Profound storyline
lyhaianhftu17 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Except for too dramatic neighborhoods and too fast life changing of Mai at the end of the movie, all parts of the movie are beautiful and very realistic. The main character is just an ordinary girl facing too many challenges. People said that it's not fare and Mai is miserable because she still couldn't find her true love till end of the movie, but I don't think that having a lover is equal happy ending. Mai has a business enough to live decently, beautiful face at ages 40, much better network. A lover may come later that adds more color to her already beautiful life. Her ex is not deserving Mai because he's grown up and still depend heavily on his mother, lack of ability to live in the social hence lack of ability to take care of his lover.

Masterful Vietnamese drama
martinpersson978 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
As someone who has indulged in countless incredible films from all genres, all eras, and all countries - I can indeed say it is no overstatement to say that Vietnam is a filmmaking country not to be overlooked. And this masterful composition, by a great director, and starring an ever impressive cast, is indeed a perfect testament of such.

The actors all do an incredible job, conveying high and raw drama, with some humour baked in between it all. It is filled with lots of immense twists ans turns for the ages indeed. Very beautiful and real script, expertly written and paced.

The cinematography, cutting and editing is incredible, very characteristic of the director's style, and indeed very beautifully put together, and accompining the raw and somewhat surreal tone of the film.

Overall, definitely a highlight of the year, and a masterful film, that is highly recommended for any lover of film! Perhaps not for the faint of heart.

Nothing special about this
toandph21 March 2024
The script is loose and bad. Feel like a fairy tale and not realistic.

The acting is mediocre.

Nothing so special about the story and the characters. You can watch these kind a lot in mediocre drama in Korea or anywhere.

Not sure why it can make top hit in Vietnam, maybe just because the director is one of the most favorite MC but this is a movie, we need to look at the story and the acting. Both are bad so for sure this is not recommend.

Dont waste your time on this. Go and watch some Korea drama or something else will be better than watching this.

Hope audience in Vietnam watch more foreign movie to have better perspective, to keep the bar higher than this.

A Disappointing Misfire
vht-3626412 April 2024
After eagerly anticipating "MAI," I left the theater feeling utterly disappointed. While the premise hinted at potential, the execution fell flat, leaving me disheartened by the overall experience.

One of the film's significant pitfalls lies in its script. The dialogue feels forced and artificial, needing more authenticity to engage viewers. Despite attempting to impart moral lessons, the script fails to address the film's underlying issues, leaving unresolved conflicts awkwardly lingering.

Additionally, the film needs help finding its comedic footing. While it endeavors to elicit laughter from the audience, the humor could be better, resulting in bland and forgettable attempts at comedy. Personally, I found myself unaffected by the film's comedic endeavors, a sentiment likely shared by many viewers.

This movie should be three stars, but I give it one star to offset those fake 10-star ratings.

Top of Vietnam, Bottom at International.
SimonPease30 April 2024
As a Vietnamese person, I am just speechless of how this movie can be called and even represented for Vietnam Films industry in general.

Movie wise, this is literally a 80% copy of La La Land from screenplay slap in one more of those "fancy transitions", soap opera stage acting and the on-going box office buff allegations surrounding the film.

Take a look at the reviews on other movie databases, Letterboxd & Rotten Tomatoes. Tran Thanh marketing team literally deleted the film's page just to get rid of the reviews only to re-upload them 1 week after. I do not respect this behavior from a studio that is trying to silence the honest reviews from critics!
