This episode came about after "Weird Al" himself saw and shared on Twitter a fan-made music video of his polka medley song "Polkarama!" set to scenes from "Friendship is Magic". Show director Jayson Thiessen saw this tweet and reached out to Al about being a guest on the show, and a year later, he replied enthusiastically that he would.
Writer Amy Keating Rogers based the lyrics of the songs in this episode on a number of other songs. "Pinkie the Party Planner" is based on "Belle" from Beauty and the Beast (1991), "The Super Duper Party Pony" is based on "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" from Mary Poppins (1964), "Pinkie's Lament" is based on "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina" from Evita (1996), "The Goof Off" on "Together (Wherever We Go)" as performed on The Brady Bunch (1969), and "Make a Wish" was based on Pink's "Raise Your Glass". Weird Al is famous for song parodies.
During "The Equestrian Goof-Off" song, Cheese Sandwich briefly sings a portion of Pinkie Pie's song from Season 2, "The Smile Song". the song is also a polka medley, a song genre which Weird Al is known for.
During The Goof Off song, there's a brief live-action segment of Boneless the rubber chicken dancing. The puppet was made of balloons, rice and dangled from a wire; it was shot by Jayson Thiessen in his basement.
Cheese has long curly brown hair, plays the accordion and is shown to have worn glasses when he was younger, just like his voice actor.
