Absolutely adored the concept for "Power Ponies", for me it was one of the most interesting and creative concepts of Season 4. Reviews for the episode from fans were rather mixed, having come across a lot of fans that liked it very much but also others that vehemently disliked it. Episodes centered around Spike too have been very variable, most of the previous ones (the exceptions being "Secret of My Excess" and to a lesser extent "Just for Sidekicks") being show low points.

For me, "Power Ponies" is towards being one of the better Spike-centric episodes and is one of Season 4's most underrated. Not one of the season's very best and there are definitely far better episodes of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' in general, but it is to me one of the better ones of the first half of the season and executes a great concept very well on the most part. Didn't think it was pointless at all. "Power Ponies" is almost as good as the "Princess Twilight Sparkle" two parter and "Castle Mane-ia" and much better than the previous two episodes.

Is "Power Ponies" perfect? No it isn't. Twilight is very underwritten here and actually doesn't do very much, her power is also the least inspired of the Mane 6 as well.

Did, like some other fans, find the ending too much of a cop-out and anti-climactic, as well as bewildering. Maybe some of the dialogue early on is a little exposition-heavy.

"Power Ponies" has so much that is great though. The animation continues to be wonderful and it is hard to not admire how much this aspect improved drastically (not that it was bad to begin with, far from it, but it was truly fabulous for almost the whole season) over-time and this season was one of the show's best-looking ones. Loved the vibrant colours and how detailed the backgrounds are, a major standout animation-wise being Fluttershy's transformation. One of my favourite moments of Season 4, of the early seasons and of the show, not just for the visual splendour but also how much it left me in awe and feeling emotional. The music is a long way from phoned in, it's quirky, atmospheric and dynamic, never at odds with the action in placement or tone.

The writing is on the most part very well done, if the exposition was a little less early on it for me would have been blameless. Some people will disagree with this and fair enough. The humour is especially good, there is plenty of it and not only does all of it work and none of it forced or tired but it is at its best hilarious. Absolutely loved Rarity in much of Season 4 and she is funny and cool here, her power one of the most creative. Pinkie Pie's character writing is a lot less forced here too in comparison to the previous episodes. The story is as intriguing and creative as its concept, with some truly inspired powers (especially Rarity's and Fluttershy's) and beautifully animated and thrillingly choreographed action. The episode really does make the absolute most of the comic book setting and one is immediately immersed in the world created and that feeling is never left.

Further nailed, or near nailed (if Twilight was more interesting it would have been perfect) is the characterisation. Rarity was the most fun to watch, but the most interesting and best developed was Fluttershy, quite complex here. The Mane 6 all serve a point in the story and apart from Twilight play major roles. Was very impressed with Spike's writing too, he tends to be a hit and miss character and personally dislike a good deal of his episodes. Here though is an example of an episode with him as the main focus since "Secret of My Excess" (and does it even better here) being a character that has strengths and flaws, rather than useless and annoying. The villain is deliciously insane. The voice acting is great, especially from Andrea Libman, killing it as Fluttershy, and Ellen Kennedy, having a whale of a time as Mane-iac (who certainly lives up to her name).

Overall, very good. 8/10

Warning: Spoilers
A lot of Bronies talk about how pointless this episode is for mostly not contributing anything different to help the season move along. And yes it is mostly filler, but I completely enjoyed it. It was a fun episode.

Story: Spike reads a comic that is somehow enchanted. It sucks him and the Mane 6 into an adventure where they become the heroes and have to stop an evil hair raising villain in order to get back home. Everybody but Spike (who is a spin off of Robin) have powers, thus Spike feels useless until he realizes the Mane 6 need him more than he thinks.

I have little to no complaints about this episode (but I'll get to my biggest complaint later). What is great about this episode is really great! Fans of Marvel and other kinds of comics and My Little Pony will enjoy this for their spin offs of Flash (Pinkie Pie), Wonder Woman (AppleJack), Green Lantern (Rarity), Thor (Rainbow Dash), Ice Man (Twilight - correct me), and the Hulk (Fluttershy). Just watching them fight off with their powers is awesome in terms of animation and action. It's really cool to see Rainbow Dash call up a storm, Pinkie to run super-duper fast, and absolutely HILARIOUS to see Fluttershy turn into Hulk at the very end. I was laughing for an entire week because of that scene. The villain is a knock off of the Joker with a wild mane that can move around like tentacles, and her plan is to turn everyone's mane wild and crack clichéd jokes. While that doesn't sound way too exciting, the Mane 6 make up for it with the action.

Now I have to turn to my big complaint. What I loved best about the movie was the moral. It was where Spike finally realizes that the Mane 6 truly need him, and when they were in a fix he would be there to help them (whether in Ponyville or in the comic world). That's a great moral! It's something for kids to learn from, about how one person's actions can help save others, and that they are indeed important to the people who love them. However, the very next episode tosses that moral out the window and makes Spike a useless comic relief again. What happened to Spike being vital to the Mane 6? He was useless for another 13 episodes, barely mentioned, or just slapped into the episode as a comic clown klutz. That really annoys me, because now it makes this episode look like the entire show was being hypocritical. I don't mind Spike being funny, but don't just slap him as the useless comic relief. If he is important to to the Mane 6 the show should prove it by more than just one episode.

Aside from that, I love this episode and is among one of my top favorites of the 4th Season. I'm not a huge comic book fan (I should read more), but this made me appreciate the spin offs, the jokes, the animation, the atmosphere, and energy poured out into the episode. I don't care if it was a pointless episode, it was fun, and had a great moral which should be made more clear throughout the entire show.
