Any moon-landing conspiracy theorist who sees director Todd Douglas Miller’s mesmerizing documentary “Apollo 11,” which captures the 1969 lunar adventure of astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong, will feel put on blast. Miller’s digital restoration of never-before-seen Nasa footage marries the pulse-pounding Apollo journey itself, to the moon and back, with the efforts of ground control to orchestrate a smooth trip.
At a recent International Documentary Association (Ida) screening in Los Angeles, and as a kick-off to the Ida’s annual awards-season lineup that looks back on the year’s best nonfiction films, director Miller spoke to an enthralled audience in a conversation moderated by IndieWire Associate Editor Steve Greene.
“The imagery is so striking, and we wanted to use every foot of it that we had,” Miller said. “It really puts you into that time period… every day was a treat to get into a time machine and do that.

Netflix may get most of the attention, but it’s hardly a one-stop shop for cinephiles who are looking to stream essential classic and contemporary films. Each of the prominent streaming platforms — and there are more of them all the time — caters to its own niche of film obsessives. From chilling horror fare on Shudder, to the boundless wonders of the Criterion Channel, and esoteric (but unmissable) festival hits on the newly launched Ovid.tv, IndieWire’s monthly guide will highlight the best of what’s coming to every major streaming site, with an eye towards exclusive titles that may help readers decide which of these services is right for them.
Here’s the best of the best for May 2019.

Helmed as “the most perfect movie that will ever be made about its subject”, Apollo 11 takes the public behind-the-scenes of the groundbreaking Nasa space mission and first lunar landing. Showcasing exquisite never-before-seen audio and video footage of key historical events and remarkable moments of camaraderie, the riveting documentary has received five stars from critics and will be available on Blu-rayTM, DVD, Digital, and via the digital movie app Movies Anywhere, as well as On Demand on May 14, 2019 from Neon and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
From director Todd Douglas Miller (Dinosaur 13) comes a cinematic event 50 years in the making. Crafted from a newly discovered trove of 65mm footage, and more than 11,000 hours of uncatalogued audio recordings, Apollo 11 takes us straight to the heart of Nasa’s most celebrated mission—the one that first put men on the moon, and forever made Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin into household names.

Todd Douglas Miller knew that, when it comes to making documentaries — like 2014’s T-Rex fossil hunt Dinosaur 13 — things can get a little stressful. Still, this new project he had been working on was something else entirely. Sitting in an office in New York City last year, the filmmaker would regularly await the arrival of one of many climate-controlled trucks being driven up from College Park, Maryland. The two drivers were instructed not to stop — and even then, only if they had to switch seats. Miller would regularly check traffic conditions,...

The year 2019 is barely two months old, but have we already been treated to a potential Oscar winner for 2020? Just a few months after Damien Chazelle‘s “First Man” dramatized Neil Armstrong‘s historic voyage to the moon, the documentary “Apollo 11” explores the same mission using newly discovered 65mm footage that shows us the event from the point of view of the astronauts, the Mission Control team and the spectators on the ground. And it’s already one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year.
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 89 based on 20 reviews — all positive. That score makes it the second highest rated film of the year so far, behind only “The Souvenir,” which comes out later this year, but has a 95 score based on rave reviews out of the Sundance Film Festival in January. “Apollo 11” also has 100% freshness on...

Just shy of the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing, Neon’s Apollo 11 is taking one giant leap into well over a hundred Imax theaters this weekend. The feature film, by Todd Douglas Miller and compiled from extensive very rarely seen large format footage of the mission, is one of the first big 2019 Sundance Film Festival debuts to hit theaters. The title joins a decent number of new Specialty releases Friday, which follows an Oscar-weekend lull. The Crown and Doctor Who’s Matt Smith stars in Mapplethorpe, Ondi Timoner’s biopic being launched by Samuel Goldwyn Films. IFC Films is opening Michael Winterbottom’s latest, The Wedding Guest. The thriller stars Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel and is getting a traditional roll out beginning in New York this weekend. And Music Box Films is rolling out Christian Petzold’s French and German drama Transit also in New York Friday...

It is easy to think that there’s nothing left to be said, and even less to be seen, about the flight that took place on July 16th, 1969 — one that took three men hundreds of thousands of miles away from earth and let two of them step foot on the moon. The countdown to lift-off, that massive flaming metal ring that drops away and burns in the stratosphere, the mirror-helmeted figure planting a flag on the lunar surface, “One small step for man …”: you don’t have to been...

We came, we saw, we occasionally got altitude sickness and we watched a shitload of movies — this is what we do every January when we head out to Park City, Utah, for the Sundance Film Festival, that annual mixer of hopeful first-time filmmakers, indie-cinema veterans, boundary-tweaking visual artists, industry movers and shakers, cine-curious locals, jaded critics and the odd Angeleno complaining about the cold.

"The enormity of this event is something that only history will be able to judge." Neon and CNN Films have debuted the full-length official trailer for the documentary Apollo 11, from director Todd Douglas Miller. This feature film is made up entirely of never-before-seen large-format film footage of the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon. It just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to quite a bit of acclaim - and it needs to be seen on the big screen for the full experience. Neon is releasing this film in connection with the 50th anniversary of the 1969 landing on the Moon by mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin. I am quoted in this new trailer (and on the full poster) from a review I wrote last weekend at Sundance, where I said it's "a stunning, gorgeously cinematic documentary made up entirely of footage from Nasa's archives." "50 years in the making..." Neon and CNN Films have released the first teaser trailer for a new documentary titled simply Apollo 11, from doc director Todd Douglas Miller. This feature film is made up entirely of never-before-seen large-format film footage of the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon. Here's to hoping this will get a full-format IMAX release, because yes please. Neon announced the news coinciding with the 49th anniversary of the 1969 landing on the Moon by mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin. This is also most definitely a tie-in with Damien Chazelle's new film First Man, about Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 mission, though there's no mention in the press release. I'm a big space nerd - can't wait to see more from this. Here's the first teaser trailer for Todd Douglas Miller's documentary Apollo 11, direct from YouTube: Apollo 11 is ...

Miptv: Dogwoof secures deals across the Nordics and Netherlands.
Dogwoof has scored a slew of deals for Matthew Heineman’s documentary feature Cartel Land, which won the Us documentary directing and cinematography awards when it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
Vesna Cudic, head of TV sales and acquisitions for Dogwoof, closed deals with Dr (Denmark), Svt (Sweden), Nkr (Norway), Yle (Finland), Vpro (Netherlands)..
Mette Hoffman Meyer, commissioning editor for Dr, said Cartel Land was “one of the scariest films I have seen - the access into a society of corruption, murder, and violence is just mind blowing.”
Heineman’s hard-hitting film is the true story of two very different vigilante groups across the Us border that have formed to combat the ruthless Mexican drug cartels.
Pre-miptv sales included a deal between Dogwoof’s UK arm and BBC Storyville with Dogwoof planning a theatrical release this autumn.

Some good news for a great film out of the Sundance Film Festival. Director Jim Strouse, who last played Sundance with the films The Winning Season and Grace Is Gone, returned this year with a film called People, Places, Things starring Jemaine Clement as a graphic artist/illustrator. The charming film was quite enjoyable, I would actually recommend it and I hope people get a chance to see it, a very amusing little romantic comedy. Deadline is reporting that up-and-coming distributor The Film Arcade has picked up People, Places, Things for a Us release, sometime this summer. The indie distributor is also releasing Sundance faves A.C.O.D., Song One, The Voices, They Came Together and Dinosaur 13. So keep an eye out. People, Places, Things stars Jemaine Clement along with Stephanie Allynne, Regina Hall, Jessica Williams, Derrick Arthur and Celia Au. I saw the film at Sundance and enjoyed it quite a bit,...

★★★☆☆ This is long-toothed storytelling. Much like the bygone fossil at the centre of Dinosaur 13 (2014), director Todd Miller allows this semi-stirring documentary to deteriorate far too quickly. With all the courtroom complexities of Citizen Kane (1941) knotted with the soap opera melodrama of Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), we become entangled in a battle between bureaucracy and benevolence over the ownership of the largest Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton to date. Heartfelt, if not a little humdrum, a small team of amorous palaeontologists from South Dakota make the historical discovery in the badlands of Black Hills.

Documentary Dinosaur 13 depicts the event of 1990, when American fossil hunter Pete Larson and his team discovered the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex ever found while digging in the badlands of South Dakota. However the skeleton was seized from Larson by the federal government. What followed was a ten-year long battle with the FBI, the National Park Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Maurice Williams, the landowner on whose property the bones were discovered. With the film due for release on DVD by Dogwoof on January 12th, we posed 10 questions to its director, Todd Miller… Plus read on for a special competition!

In nominations announcements from those critics groups who bother with them, "Birdman" is far and away the leader, even if "Boyhood" remains the overall victor on the winning side. That played out again with the Central Ohio Film Critics Association, which handed Alejandro González Iñárritu's film 10 nominations Sunday morning. One wonders whether the film could lead with the Oscar nods, too, when they are announced in just 11 days. Check out the full list of winners below. Winners will be announced Jan. 8. Soon after premiering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival "Dinosaur 13" was the first deal closed. The film then was exhibited at festivals and in theaters throughout the country. "Dinosaur 13" will make its global television premiere on CNN/U.S. Tonight, Dec. 11 at 9:00pm Pst and 11:00pm Est.
When paleontologist Peter Larson and his team from South Dakota’s Black Hills Institute made one of the world’s greatest dinosaur discoveries in 1990, they knew it was the discovery of a lifetime — the largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton ever found. The dinosaur quickly became known to the world as ‘Sue,’ named after amateur paleontologist, Susan Hendrickson, who located the first fossil fragments of the historic find.
“We are honored to be sharing this amazing story of scientific discovery with CNN’s audience. CNN Films’ multiple platform approach is the perfect fit for this story – and the type of films we plan to produce,” said award-winning filmmaker Todd Douglas Miller.
Larson recalls the exhilaration of the find, and of toiling in more than 100°F to recover the skeleton before it could be damaged by weather, oxidation, and other forces of erosion: “We all wanted to see what the skeleton was going to look like,” Larson says in the film.
“It was – it still is today – the most exciting, the most wonderful excavation – the most incredible thing we have ever done,” his brother, Neal Larson echoes.
Through interviews with the principal players in the story that unfolds, Miller portrays what happened next. Shortly after the excavation, a ten-year battle ensued with the U.S. government, powerful museums, Native American communities, and competing paleontologists over the legal custody of Sue.
Academic paleontologists were outraged that a historic find would be planned for exhibition at a commercial facility (the Black Hills Institute), Native American communities filed complaints that the find was improperly removed from land that belonged to them. And, in an unusual argument, the federal government requested nullification of the sale of the prospect rights for the fossil by the landowner, who now also argued that he had never intended to sell Sue to Larson.
In the government’s view, the fossil had become land, making it inappropriate to transport, attempt to auction, or purchase Sue without legal standing. Larson and his crew soon found themselves fighting for their own freedom.
After tonight "Dinosaur 13" will be available in simulcast via CNNgo by logging in with a TV provider username and password on CNN’s iPad app or at www.CNN.com/go. The film will encore on CNN on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 9:00pm and 11:00pm Est.
The next CNN Films broadcast premiere will be "Life Itself", a biographical profile of renowned film critic Roger Ebert, which has been shortlisted among 15 other films to compete for the Academy Award in the Best Feature Documentary category.

Years ago, Jurassic Park gave audiences their first look at some amazing prehistoric creatures, and wowed audiences with their breathtaking beauty and heart-stopping danger. One of the stand out creatures of the franchise has always been the Velociraptor, a six-foot killing machine with retractable claws, impressive agility, and a bad attitude. They were absolutely frightening when they were first revealed, and from what we knew, they were within the realm of scientific accuracy. That was until the crew of the documentary Dinosaur 13 came along with that one factor that can stop a film dead in its tracks: scientific accuracy. The BBC ran a report about Dinosaur 13's true life story about the paleontologists who found "Sue" -- the most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton ever. This doc, of course, the jumping off point for the BBC's actual story, which covers the inaccurate depiction of movie dinosaurs throughout the entire...

It's a magical new world. Increasingly, movies that were deemed worthy of only a limited release in a small number of theaters in Los Angeles and New York are now released via VOD (cables services, iTunes, Amazon Prime) at the same time. Movies without delay! Here's a roundup of what you should be adding to your list this month.About Alex The New York Times compared it to The Big Chill, and for obvious reasons: A bunch of old friends reunite and dig up all of their old shit. (They even dance to a soundtrack of oldies!) But The Big Chill was indeed wonderful, and About Alex holds its own with a cast full of young favorites (Max Greenfield! Aubrey Plaza! Jason Ritter! Max Minghella! Shannon from Lost!) who kiss and scream at each other enough to make this a worthy watch. Dinosaur 13 There's nothing worse than watching a...

Chicago – Only in America can an animal die millions of years ago, have its fossilized bones discovered in the 20th Century, and end up in a court of law, determining who she belongs to as if in a child custody case. The story of the most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex ever found is chronicled in the new documentary “Dinosaur 13.”
The T-Rex in question is nicknamed Sue, named after her discover Susan Hendrickson, and now resides in the Field Museum of Chicago. Hendrickson was part of a fossil-hunting-for-profit team who uncovered Sue in 1990, only to have a location dispute put her ownership rights into litigation. This story is fascinating, from the viewpoint of what land ownership means, and who owns what is found on said lands. It also is a cautionary tale about messing with the U.S. government, because as this film rightly points out, they mostly use their law...

Three high-profile Sundance 2014 films top the grosses for this week's specialized openers. Comedy "The Trip to Italy" (IFC) and music drama "Frank" (Magnolia) fared best in theaters only--from distributors who often use day-and-date Video on Demand avenues. A third, zombie flick "Life After Beth" (A24), which has been viewable on Direct TV for the past month, opened soft in two prime bicoastal locations. Over the past six weeks, 19 total films from Sundance have opened, with only two ("Boyhood" from IFC and "A Most Wanted Man" from Roadside Attractions) crossing over as box office breakouts that reached the Top Ten. ("Boyhood" reached that milestone this weekend.) Three other Sundance 2014 films, all documentaries -- "Dinosaur 13," "Captivated" and "Mr. X - A Vision of Leos Carax" -- also opened Friday, but did not report grosses. Dinosaur 13 will infuriate you, which is saying a lot for a movie about paleontology and the finer points of U.S. property law. It starts off in August 1990, near Faith, South Dakota, when a group of scrappy, veteran fossil hunters from the Black Hills Institute discover some articulated vertebrae in a rock face, revealing what appears to be an intact Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton. Patiently, but anxiously, they dig down into the cliff with picks and shovels, in 115-degree temperatures, over days and days, slowly excavating the teeth, the skull, the tail. Sure enough, it turns out they’ve found the full skeleton of a T. rex, perhaps the most impressive paleontological find of our time. They pay the landowner $5,000 for the rights to the find — the most ever paid up until that time. Then they load up the skeleton — again, taking great care, learned from years of...

One of the most impressive things about “Dinosaur 13," Todd Miller’s moving documentary that premiered at Sundance and hits theaters August 15 from Lionsgate, is that it makes the audience realize -- and feel -- what it means to lose something incredibly important. A spouse? No. A child? Not quite. Over the film’s near two-hour running time, we come to understand that to paleontologist Peter Larson -- who with his team in 1990 discovered the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton in archeological history, named it Sue, and then became embroiled in a lengthy, well, “custody” battle over her -- this dinosaur is a child he loves very much. He certainly grieves when he loses her. The doc begins in the badlands of South Dakota, where Sue was discovered by Larson’s teammate Susan Hendrickson (thus becoming the dino’s namesake). Using archival footage that would ultimately become instrumental in the court case,...

Ever since a name as such was coined in the early 19th century, dinosaurs have been a source of fascination. The idea of huge, monstrous creatures that ruled the planet in a time before man, remaining in the present day only in skeletal fossils, have captured the imaginations of children and adults for over two hundred years. Those remains are the star attractions in museums all over the world, and have inspired stories from "Journey To The Center Of The Earth" to next year's "Jurassic World," a sequel to one-time top-grossing film in history, "Jurassic Park." But paleontology and fossil-hunting can be a dirty, difficult business. The so-called Bone Wars between Edward Drinker Coper and Othniel Charles Marsh in the latter half of the 19th century was a bitter feud ending with Coper dying in poverty, and the dinosaur renaissance begun in the 1960s hasn't improved matters much. It's this...

Chicago – When the skeletal remains of a long-lost animal is discovered and pulled from the earth, does anybody really own it? That is the question in the new documentary, “Dinosaur 13,” directed by Todd Miller. It’s the story of discovering those dinosaur bones and the implications for the person who exhumed them, Peter Larson.
“Dinosaur 13” ended up being “Sue” – named for the actual person who first saw the bones, Susan Hendrickson – the most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex specimen ever discovered. Sue now resides in the Field Museum in Chicago, but her journey to the final resting place was fraught with the 20th Century notion of who owned her. Director Todd Douglas Miller combines archival footage, news reports and re-creations to unfold the only-in-America story of the final journey to rest of a long dead creature.

Ever since Jurassic Park exploded into the imaginations of kids everywhere in ‘93, there hasn’t been another film since that has sparked the same interest in our large, scaley (or feathery) friends, the dinosaurs. Not even Spielberg himself with Jp’s sequel, The Lost World, could match the same fervent love for Raptors and Tyrannosaurs that the original inspired. That is, until now; Dinosaur 13, an incredible new documentary, comes the closest to capturing the same childlike wonder and awe we feel when coming in contact with a creature from an almost entirely different planet, sixty-five millions years into the past – even if that contact is divided by a cinema screen. And it’s all because of a bunch of bones. Let’s go back in time – but not that far…

A bittersweet reminder that while the scientific method may be coolly rational, the people who do science are deeply emotionally caught up in their work. I’m “biast” (pro): love dinosaurs (who doesn’t?)
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Perhaps more amazing than the fact that we know anything at all about dinosaurs is that we can know so much about them with so few specimens to examine. The title of the fascinating Dinosaur 13 refers to the skeleton of the T. rex known as Sue, who now resides at the Field Museum in Chicago: she was, at the time of her discovery in August 1990, only the 13th example of the species ever found, and the biggest and most complete at that. (There have been a few more unearthed since, but not many.) This is the story of the long,...
