Twilight discourse

Really love the first part of Season 4's finale "Twilight's Kingdom". It is to me the best of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic's' season finales and a strong contender for the show's best two parter overall, in a show that has an impressive in general track record when it comes to its two parters. Apart from one small aspect, pretty much everything about the two parter works and makes for one of the season's (solid but not quite outstanding) high-point.

Part 2 of "Twilight's Kingdom" is even better than the first. It has all of the brilliant things of Part 1, which essentially sets them up (and did so brilliantly) and builds upon them. While also having an even better narrative in terms of emotional punch and what goes on. Love Part 1 of "Twilight's Kingdom", love Part 2 even more as it felt like there was more to it and like the conflicts and character writing were advancing rather than standing still or going backwards.

Admittedly there are the not so great and at points rather ugly rainbow designs, but the good things are so many and so brilliant executed in a way not seen as strongly as with the previous two parters that a big part of me was willing to let that go. The rest of the animation is fine, the vibrancy of the colours is still intact, as is the vivid atmosphere and the meticulously detailed backgrounds. The character designs became more polished with each season and one can see the growth here. The music is dynamic with the action and has an infectious groove and atmosphere.

In my view the writing is some of the best of the season. Not just because it is well written, even in any re-capping it doesn't get bogged down too much by exposition or over-explanation, but also because of its emotional complexity. There is some heart-pounding and tense conflict (betrayal was seldom this wrenching the gut in the way it is here in this two parter). As well as emotional moments that really tug at the heart-strings, that were even stronger here in Part 2, and Discord brings some great comic timing that balances beautifully.

Likewise, the story is tense, poignant and a lot of fun. It is even more eventful than the first part, constantly moving forward and always arresting. One may worry that with more than one conflict going on that the episode could risk being over-stuffed and muddled but it was neither. The ending is the finest example of the episode's heart-pounding and heart tugging. All the characters are true to character and interest in their own way. Twilight is regal and relatable and Discord never stops being a joy. Tirek is one of the show's better villains in my view, he's got a genuinely sinister vibe, motivations aren't confused and it feels like things are at stake. He is not one of the missed opportunity villains like King Sombra was.

Cannot fault the voice acting, Andrea Libman is truly heartfelt and John DeLancie is formidable and hilarious. Mark Acheson is suitably sinister as Tirek. Tara Strong also gives emotive voice acting.

Summing up, wonderful conclusion to a solid fourth season. 10/10

Brilliant, just Brilliant!

Warning: Spoilers
(This is a review of both parts) I watched this episode on Saturday on HaxMega's live stream and all i say is that this is by far one of the MLP FIM episode yet. Twilight Sparkle is confused with her title of princess and a ancient evil know as Lord Tirek (A rebooted version of the villain from the very very very first MLP cartoon from 30 years ago) has escaped and is absorbing everypony's power taking their Cutie Marks in the process and that's just the first act in this mega 2 parter exraggnazer! What did i think of Tirek? By far the best MLP FIM villain yet. One of the best parts of the episode was when Twilight Sparkle (with the power of Celestial, Luna and Cadence inside her) and Lord Tirek did there big fight. Anther moment of awesome was when Tirek absorbed the power of Discord. He does indeed get the power of Discord which is part of the reason which makes him more bad ass. Now with all future 2 parter MLP FIM episodes i judge all by Twilight's Kingdom now. If this was the grand grand final of the show i wouldn't mind. It feel like a perfect way to end the entire show but a 5th season has been commissioned so DHX defiantly think they can top this. Discord now trying to show he can be a true friend defiantly fells like a story they are setting up for in season 5. If you are Brony like me, then this episode is a definite must watch. You will not be disappointed.

Is this a child series any more?

Warning: Spoilers
WARNING MAYBE SPOILERS AHEAD

I must admit, I watched Dragon Ball Z when it was showed during 2001/2002 in Germany at an age of 9/10. But this series destination was to children of an age of 4-7. So I don't know if scenes like the destruction of the library are age-based any more. I am 21 years old so I liked those parts, but i know if I watched the part where Tirek drained magic from a Unicorn the first time, at an age of 6, it would have scared the s*** out of me.

Basically, I like the development of Discord in this double episode. He is one of my favorite characters of the show (beside Zecora), so my affinity lies on his development. I find he made a huge step, with his amulet being Twilights key to the Super-Syan-Mane-Six-Rainbow-Power :D

I am an adult My little pony fan for a half a year now. I watched the went-down of JanAnimations channel in real-time, but I experienced the main activity of the fans just 2 years late. Nevertheless I am proud to be part of this community right now, but every single one of it should ask him-/herself if it would be in Lauren Fausts Spirit to see the series develop in such a direction. In my opinion, it holds a lot of potential, but the writers must keep an eye on not losing ground more than any before.

With many regards from Germany,

Warning: Spoilers
Talking about only part 2 of this episode feels incomplete for me without mentioning part 1 as well. So for this review I'll be talking about the entire episode.

Basically the story is that Princess Twilight needs to figure out her place as a princess while a sinister villain named Tirek steals magic, flight, and strength from all the ponies in Equestria. Celestia sends out Discord to capture him, who decides to join forces with Tirek instead, so it's once again up to Twilight and her friends to stop him.

It's tricky for me to say what I feel about this episode because while it is good it has some messy flops. I'll rant the bad stuff first:

First off, it still seems pointless for Twilight to be a princess, but I ranted enough on that for Magical Mystery Cure. Second, what is so great about "Rainbow Power" all it does is make the Mane 6 look weird and powerful. I wouldn't mind the power part, but their designs were unnecessary and over the top. However I won't lie, while some of the ponies like Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie look too much, Twilight and Rarity look awesome - still hate that it's another Hasbro toy excuse. Third, (the biggest sin) Discord. I love Discord very much! He's my favorite villain of My Little Pony, even more than Nightmare Moon and the Queen of the Changelings. When he was evil he had a way of making the town turn literally upside down and inside out, and when he reformed he was a total troll and made fun of all the things most of the Bronies were angry at like Alicorn Twilight. I welcome seeing him go evil again, but he didn't really turn evil in this episode, he became the meek henchman of the evil mastermind. That's not Discord! If he were a true villain, he would take charge rather than be someone else's left hand man. Also his conversion to being evil was just rushed, even more than his reformation in Keep Calm and Flutter On. Speaking of that episode, Celestia had him turned back from stone because she would have use for his magic. In all honesty, he's useless except for 4th wall comic relief, or in this episode's case, is tossed aside to be evil so Twilight can have a motivation to finding her key for magic and defeat Tirek. And worse still, when Discord loses his powers, he's all mopey dopey. That's not Discord's character. I never thought the writers could place him out of character and make him so dependent on the main villain, that it's just so heartbreaking. Because of all this, Discord has been ruined for me. Anytime I see an episode with him good or evil I keep crying that he would later be reduced to a weak henchman.

Now let's get to the good stuff: I've ranted how Twilight being a princess made no sense - and it still doesn't - however she is willing to take responsibility to do anything whether it's giving her magic or just smiling, and she tries to figure out her place as a princess. That's some pretty good character development. I won't fail to mention that the fight scene is intense! How many of you want to bet someone's going to make a video game just from that one scene? One to one combats in My Little Pony are usually kept to a minimum, but this went on for like five minutes or so, which is a long time. Tirek is a new villain with an interesting backstory, but I've seen it before and honestly stealing magic does not seem as impressive as turning Ponyville upside down or reigning eternal night on the land. However it is new and I'll admit one of the most aggressive moves a villain could make to directly attack their prey. I still say that my favorite scene is Discord trolling and helping Twilight. (Hey Hasbro, Alicorn Discord would make a new great toy!)

In all honesty I think that My Little Pony should end here - I just don't see how it can go on. However with Season 5 coming soon, I'm looking forward to seeing what they do. I just hope they fix the error they made with Discord and what role the Mane 6 would have in Equestria now that they all live in a palace. I enjoyed the episode, but I still think some things could have been done better.
