A Gem from Romania
bobbygmt13 March 2014
I saw this film during the Sofia Film Festival in March 2014. I was thoroughly impressed with everything - the story was well woven together, the acting of all characters was beyond reproach - I particularly liked the charming role of the young Anghel Damian who played Victor - and the film works on every level. Apparently the story is to a considerable extent true to real life events. The political impact was a little subdued within some of the plot lines, but perhaps so much the better - it makes for entertaining viewing. The message from the film is that perhaps fading memory should not be allowed to obliterate the mistakes of the past. Well done, Valentin Hotea and cast.

more than a great film. a surprise scene by scene. because it propose something profound different by other contemporary Romanian films. for the courage of Valentin Hortea to propose a subtle manner to explore the past. for the impeccable performances. and for the honest reflection of a case not different by many others but explored in precise manner detail by detail. a film about Comunist legacy but in wise manner. about search of sense and errors and secrets, family and obscure questions who not describe the reality but propose a start for yourself. the script, the actors, the dialogues - all is impressive. the language remains at same cruel level but it has not the status of axis. each of its virtues impose Roxanne as a kind of manifesto. not only artistically. but as first step of a form of social exorcism.
