It starts off slowly and is somewhat moody throughout due to the subject matter and the fact that the film is slow moving and especially depressing, especially with all the deaths that are occurring.

This episode spans 35 years and introduces us to Olive, a stern teacher with quite a reputation. Married to pharmacist Richard Jenkins, the two lead a very drab life along with their son.

Tragedies abound here and we see people change here as the years go on. The town seems ripe for depression with suicides discussed.

There is frustration here from Olive to the English teacher she secretly loved and spreading to various town members.

On the day of her son's wedding, Olive is obnoxious as ever.

Where I start and where I finish .. Deep strange feelings accompanied me throughout my viewing of the episode .. It's like a dream, very deep dialogues, great acting performances, the philosophy of life of this family, each person is different and has different feelings and priorities .. The fact that Olive was suspicious of her husband and annoyed with him for taking care of that only child .. Although she is related to another person and has feelings for him in secret .. As for my impression as the first episode, the construction was a little slow at first and the way of narration was strange to me, but as the episode went on I got used to the sequence of the series, a good start, although it is deeply strange, mysterious and a desire for me to know a lot ..

I have learned my lesson well : in the past because of a favorite actress, i would have buy this mini show in DVD. But as i was so disappointed with my last tries involving Kate Winsley and Holly Hunter, now it's better than I rent them ! This one starring Frances is however excellent, even if it's particularly sad.

It's an accurate portrayal of a country, hardworking couple. The stories aren't spectacular but comes from the daily life. We can't say that the couple is dysfunctional but they are at least opposite : Frances is stern, cold as his husband is warm and helpful. So if it's a bit unfortunate that Frances plays this old witch, her partner also delivers an amazing characterization. Indeed, as the show expands 40 years, you can watch the meaning of life : a community, kids, wedding, old age, all the essential stuff than actual shows (except « shameless ») keep away ! In addition to the splendid natural location of this state, the show is truly spectacular by its cinematography : it's ages that we don't have seen such beautiful, natural, full range colors and it's not a surprise to see that it was Lynch's operator from « blue velvet » ! Just compare today movies and shows that uses only blue and orange and you'll see what I mean ! To follow my habit to pick the best episode, i take this first one. It's maybe the one which is the more fun, thanks to great energy of the « mouse ». The last one with usual grumpy Bill brings also hope and joy in a rather gloom setting.
