True crime remains a remarkably popular genre, especially when Netflix is involved. The streamer continues to pump out horrific real-life tales of murder and mayhem, with multiple examples in 2024 already. Back in February, "Lover, Stalker, Killer" proved incredibly popular with its tale of online dating turned deadly, while "sickening" documentary "Hell Camp: Teen Nightmare" similarly drew hordes of viewers. Now, we've got yet another Netflix true crime hit on our hands with "Homicide: New York."
From "Law & Order" creator Dick Wolf, this latest docuseries explores multiple crimes from New York history. Interviews with detectives, prosecutors, victims, and friends and family all help to pad out the retellings and give a more personal insight into the various crimes, which range from the 2001 Carnegie Deli massacre to a 1997 stabbing murder. These cases are supposedly among the investigators' toughest and most challenging, and are explored throughout the series' five episodes. The conceit...

It’s the stuff of horror movies: The phone rings, a woman answers and hears nothing but slow, heavy breathing — and there’s no telling who’s on the other end. The true-crime docuseries Can I Tell You a Secret?, from Hell Camp: Teen Nightmare director Liza Williams, profiles three women subjected to harassment like this by serial cyberstalker Matthew Hardy. The women had no idea who was behind it all — Hardy’s modus operandi was to pose as people the victims knew on social media, using fake profiles to spread relationship-ending lies about them.
In the face of mounting evidence and an ever-growing number of victims, how did Hardy manage to get away with his crimes for over a decade?

If you thought our collective true crime fascination would have wound down at some point over the past few years, you've probably been pretty surprised at just how enduring our appetite for this stuff really is. We might only be a month and a half into 2024, but this year has already proven the true crime genre continues to captivate audiences worldwide, especially when Netflix is the purveyor.
Earlier this year, there was the "sickening" documentary "Hell Camp: Teen Nightmare," which chronicled the suffering of dozens of teenagers who were kidnapped and taken to a "wilderness therapy camp" which was basically an excuse to abuse them over the course of several months — and all with their parents' blessing. Lovely stuff. After that little appetizer, we all apparently became fascinated with Netflix's "American Nightmare," which told the story of a woman who was blamed for her own kidnapping. Now, the streamer has...

Nothing marks a new year quite like the annual Times Square ball drops. This year was no exception, as partygoers gathered live in New York City and families and friends huddled in their living rooms across the country to toast 2024. The televised tradition topped the most-watched telecasts in all of broadcast, according to the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for the week of Dec. 25 to Dec. 31.
Dick Clark’s show on ABC has reigned as the top-rated New Year’s Eve special for over 30 years. This year’s rendition, “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2024” carried on the tradition, edging out all other programming for the week. Live from New York’s iconic Time Square, with co-host Rita Ora, the broadcast featured a star-studded lineup of musical performances by Megan Thee Stallion, Jelly Roll, Sabrina Carpenter, Green Day and more.

Usually, when you hear about a Netflix release topping the charts it's either yet another example of how Netflix viewers will watch anything or the surprising resurgence of a long-forgotten film. But sometimes, the streamer serves up a true crime documentary so salacious we can't help but binge away until we've imbibed the entire harrowing narrative in one. Such was the case recently with "Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal," which had viewers around the world tuning in.
Since it gave up on the movie-by-mail model and became a streaming service, Netflix has consistently provided us with a stream of true crime documentaries that delve into all manner of sordid affairs. From "Making a Murderer" to "The Staircase," other people's trauma has proven a reliably popular genre for Netflix, which has capitalized as much as anyone on our ongoing love affair with true crime.

In 2021, Paris Hilton spoke on Capitol Hill about the trauma she endured at a camp for troubled teenagers in Utah.
“I was strangled. Slapped across the face. Watched in the shower by male staff,” she shared.
So begins the Netflix documentary “Hell Camp: Teen Nightmare,” which offers an origin story for Hilton and countless other teenagers’ experiences within the United States’ “troubled teen” industry. As “Hell Camp” reveals, there was one man pushing the growth of supposedly rehabilitative sleep-away programs for misbehaved youth: Steve Cartisano.
An Air Force veteran, Cartisano charged parents steep prices to send their children to a 63-day program at the Challenger Foundation in Utah. Teens were kidnapped from their homes in the middle of the night and jetted off to the desert, where they were forced to hike 500 miles in exhausting conditions. Moreover, they were often victims of emotional and physical abuse from camp staff. One 16-year-old camper,...

As a victim of the “troubled teen industry,” Paris Hilton spoke on Capitol Hill in 2021 to advocate on behalf of survivors of the controversial child-rehabilitation system. The opening moments of Netflix’s Hell Camp: Teen Nightmare features a clip of Hilton’s speech in front of Congress detailing her experience as a 17-year-old at Provo Canyon School, a youth treatment center in Utah. “I was strangled, slapped across the face, watched in the shower by male staff,” she says.
