Corny and Amateurish
jamdifo2 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is the typical highly skilled trained team of killers, one has a conscious, is left for dead by the rest of the group, but guess what, he's not dead. Oh yeah, they killed his wife. So he seeks out the rest of the team for revenge, taking with him his baby son, who's crying every other minute in the movie.

You watch a movie like this for the action, which is a total stinker. Guys throwing their punches in slo mo as to not hurt the other actor. Its dreadful. None of the fight scenes are any good. Also, the lead actor gets stabbed thru the center of the chest (heart?) not once, but twice thru out the movie. The second time he's immediately walking away with his son like it was nothing. The movie is mercifully short but don't waste your time.

Do yourself a favor ...
bridgeborn31 January 2015
I have no affiliation with this film and have nothing good to say about it. Sadly, this will be a scathing review.

This was so bad its difficult to articulate. The acting was very pedestrian. The lack luster performance in the actual story telling was a constant strain on my patience. The stunts and fight scenes were tolerable. The immersion quality of this film was non-existent. I want my 2 hours back.

Do yourself a favor just enjoy an old Bruce Lee rerun and call it a day. In the end you will have gotten your kung fu movie and at least you won't be mad.

A bad copy of Lone Wolf and Cub
zombie-328 February 2015
This was bad. Where do I start.

I had got this for the fighting I was expecting to see. The fights look like they had been arranged by a glee club.

The acting was a fire hazard it was that wooden. the only redeeming parts were the animated sections.

The story what little there was was a pale imitation of Lone Wolf and Cub but I wont say that too loud in case I insult that good story.

The best part about this movie is undoubtedly the end credits. This means that you have endured the waste of time that is this movie. The credits move with a grace and style that was missing from the combat scenes.

Value your time and dodge this train wreck of a movie.

If you're like me, don't even start the movie...
InOZm9 February 2015
I am about halfway through the movie, and if you're anything like me, you'll need closure. So...don't even start to watch the movie.

As stated by other reviewers, the acting is similar to the acting you'd see in a local commercial. The fighting is what you'd see in a beginner's fighting class. And the story, it's the same story you've seen time and time again.

I love watching train wrecks, so I just have to finish what I started, and see this through to the end. I'm sure it's exactly as I expect it to be, because I expect no plot twists, and I've seen this movie before with a different title, and much better acting.

Just my two cents, but save your time, and money, and watch something with more substance. Wish me luck on finishing the rest of the movie.

Cheap Thai martial arts actioner
Leofwine_draca7 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
MYSTIC BLADE is a very low budget martial arts flick from Thailand, featuring as its leads a bunch of actors who were stunt men or bit players in the likes of ONG BAK and WARRIOR KING. And yet, despite the lo-fi feel, I found myself enjoying it, at least to a degree. Sure, the non-action bits require fast-forwarding because they're really predictable and not really worth bothering with, but the action does deliver at times.

The film is deeply unoriginal and seems to be a cross between ONG BAK and RAMBO in terms of stylistics, with a little Lone Wolf & Cub influence added to the mix. The protagonist is deeply uncharismatic and the most interesting performers are those in support, like GAME OF THRONES actor Conan Stevens and the giant Thai guy. However, the frequent action scenes, particularly in the second half, are quite tolerable, only occasionally spoilt by some silly wire work. Otherwise these actors do have good moves and the violence is quite satisfying.

LOOK WITHIN FOR PEACE AND WITHOUT FOR ACTING LESSONS GRASSHOPPER.
nogodnomasters14 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The film starts out showing us the honorable profession of assassination. However when our Shadow Warriors are told to kill a family, Sam (Don Ferguson who also wrote this) balks and kills another assassin to save the family. Of course after stabbing the guy in the back and shooting him 9 times in the torso, he can only be stopped by choking.

Sam runs to Northern Thailand where he meets a monk, gets a sword, and a girl...has a son, see DVD cover. Of course the bad guys come back for revenge and they only run Sam through with a sword, I mean all the way through with about 2 feet of blade out the back. This slows him up for a scene as he takes his kid with him, or not, to kill the other assassins who for some reason don't hang out anywhere together, but are all around the globe.

Don Ferguson can't act and made sure no one in the film would show him up. He also can't write a script.

Don Ferguson was known as BODY GUARD 6 in "Ong-bak". Conan Stevens was known as BIG SECURITY GUARD in "Body Guard 2." Jawed El Berni was known as BODY GUARD 2 in "Black Shadow." Tim Man was known as BODY GUARD in "Kal Kissne Dekha." Director/actor David Ismalone was known as BODY GUARD in "The Fifth Commandment." Yothin Udomsanti was not known as anything.

Guide: No F-bombs, sex, nudity, or acting.

Poorly acted, badly scripted, this is the worst action/martial arts film I've seen in a very long time
anthonydbennett2 March 2015
The summary says it all really. It was about an hour and twenty longer than it should have been.

Actually, I retract that, the cartoon montage pieces were actually not that bad, but they only made up about five minutes of the whole movie.

I wish I could charge a creativity fee for the time I wasted watching this movie but I fear the makers couldn't possibly stump up the price.

If I could only use one word to describe this cinematic excrement I'd have to invent one by melding "yetch" and "blergh"......maybe "BLYERGHTCH"...

I thought the one saving grace would be that it ended without the possibility of ever having a sequel but even that consolation was denied me.

I remember seeing a badly dubbed Mad Max clone from Italy in the late Eighty's that contained anal rape and the term "Mother-grabber" in the same scene. After watching this I can understand how those terms can fit together.

Shame on you David Ismalone, shame.

Don't bother
djbanks127 August 2019
I got 5 minutes into the movie and when the hero says he has a problem with killing a family and his buddy's replay is "you kill him, I'll do the wife and kid", and he agrees with that, it was time to change the channel.

Weak story, weak script.
rexraven13 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
"Before my showdown with Ken I must leave Sherol (my baby son) with one of the few people I trust, Reyosan, he is a sword maker and he lives the old ways of the samurai".

Really? Think that is a good idea?

"I walked and I walked 'til I could walk no more."

Correction "I traveled for many days 'til I could walk no more."

The spots of animation were kind of a nice touch.

He develops a conscience after being a, stipulated, don't just rough people up and warn them, kill them (leave no one alive) bloodthirsty mercenary? Really?

Story line and monologue needed a lot more for the movie to carry its weight.

The action scenes were okay but not enough to remedy the overall production. Killing off his wife seemed totally contrived. Him carrying around a baby was just too weird.

Interesting film title but the movie simply does not live up to it.

Undearrated movie great martial arts film
bazza_mckenzie0220 December 2015
this movie didn't have a massive budget so understand that from the start, but the talent behind it in David Ismalone (you'd know from Ong Bak) the great Tim Man martial arts legend and young up and coming martial arts actor and renowned stuntman Don Ferguson whose film it is.

Has a good story for a martial arts movie, everyone who worked on this film gave their blood sweat and tears and worked their guts out.

For everyone who knocks it let's see your completed film! this stands above so many martial arts films for fight scenes and story wise been watching martial arts movies since I was 5 years old and this is a top notch film worth a look.

Great stuff can't wait to see more of your films.

Simple, sinister, but really entertaining Martial Arts Action
zerozx20 December 2015
Briefly about the plot: After several crucial missions, a Lone assassination warrior named Sam, abandons his ways of assassination from his former killer commando group, choosing a simple, ordinary, but exotic life in Thailand, another life style incorporating Buddhism in peace, getting married with a Thai woman and raising a child together in the Northern jungles of Thailand. But soon, it took an abrupt end, as Sam's former assassin partner tracked him and murdered his wife in front of his wife. With nothing left but his innocent son, Sam is taking up the ultimate path for revenge redemption, taking his kid alongside him in the most brutal sceneries in his quest for vengeance.

For an ordinary person, this movie would obviously seem to be crap. However, in the heart of Martial Arts practitioner or fan, who sees certain aspects from a different view, despite the simplistic cliché plot, I think that this movie is worth seeing, as one of Canada's rising stuntman, supporting actors in several International and Asian Martial Arts Action movies and leading personalities of Thailand's Asia Pacific Taekwondo Organization, displays a full array of exciting Martial Arts actions in his starring role.

Some short remarks, some story-telling animation flicks have obviously replaced some cost-consuming acting sceneries. Not that it is something bad. It was just a fact, from a production standpoint for a new and first time director.

It can only get better for his next project....

A big shout out to Master Don, (a former TKD teacher of mine, when I attended TKD classes in International School)

An Entertaining Low-Budget Revenge Flick
kamhwy-637112 July 2016
It is what it is. A low-budget film produced in Thailand. You can't sit down to a movie like Mystic Blade and expect a Lucas production or the like. It's a good popcorn and beer film to watch on a rainy weekend.

The fight scenes are reasonably well choreographed, the narrating animation is good and the storyline is enough to keep me interested. One or two plot twists caught me off guard so the writing wasn't too bad. Some of the scenery in Thailand was beautiful as the movie made good use of the varying terrain and locations in the Kingdom. The bond between the main actor and his son (it's really his kid) was heart-wrenching at times as the little boy cried when dad would walk away. You can't teach someone to cry on cue.

All things considered, for a movie that was apparently funded by one or two people and done completely by themselves, it's quite well done. Again, it's not going to win any awards, but it's worth a watch if you happen to find it in your youth hostel and have some Thai beers in the fridge. I applaud the effort.
