More murders on the Northern Isles
Tweekums1 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
These comments refer to the whole story not just episode two.

An old friend of DI Perez returns to Shetland but not long after they see each other he is found dead in his car at the bottom of a cliff. Initially it looks like an accident but Perez isn't so sure. His friend was a journalist and Perez thinks his death may have been linked to a story he was writing about a new, controversial gas pipeline that is planned for the island. Wanting to be certain that it was murder he calls in an expert from the mainland; she isn't so sure but when another body turns up it looks as though Perez was right. As the investigation continues more motives emerge along with more suspects.

This was another entertaining mystery although possibly not quite as good as the opening story of the series… possible because by now the setting seems less exotic. There are plenty of motives and by the end almost every non-police character is a suspect so it will be as much luck as judgement if you work out who did it and why! The cast, which includes several TV regulars does a good job and keeps things believable even though the series is set somewhere where murder is incredibly rare. The creators are also to be to be congratulated for avoiding the cliché of introducing a romance when Perez called in a female forensics expert. Overall this was pretty good; fans of murder mysteries should certainly enjoy it.

THAT'S Better

After a questionable Part 1, the series comes roaring back with a concise and interesting conclusion. I disagree with those who criticize the pacing. This is SHETLAND. Slow is part of the appeal.

Unlike Part 1, there were no extraneous scenes. And the final reveal of the murderer was solidly built upon reasonable clues. Also Douglas Henshall was far more believable this episode as Jimmy Perez. Possibly because he had to match Nina Sosanya's dead-on natural portrayal of Willow Reeves.

The writers did a good job of spreading the guilt around, making it difficult to guess the identity of the killer.

Deep story, but perhaps too slow.

Jimmy Perez now has a second murder to investigate, he also has to deal with problems at home, and potentially poisoned fish.

I liked the first episode, I quite liked this second part, I'm all for a deep, heavy murder mystery, but in all honesty this was a little boring at times.

Plenty of suspects, and the ending is cohesive, maybe a 90 minute format would have worked better here. The first episode of the series didn't suffer the same pacing issues.

The show is known for its breathtaking scenery and incredible visuals, unfortunately they don't make great use of the surroundings here, only a few shots to enjoy.

Nina Sosanya is cracking here, as was Alex Norton, the acting in general was on point.

Ultimately it's rewarding, but at times it's very slow, 6/10.
