In a conversation with uInterview founder Erik Meers, Andrew Cumming, Director of the recently released movie Out of Darkness, reflected on where his inspiration for the prehistoric horror film originated.
“I was finishing film school and I was watching a documentary one night on the BBC here in the UK and the first episode was about early modern humans and I just thought what a cool time period that has been rarely shared in cinema…or it hasn’t been given the treatment I would like it to have, which is this lean, muscular, slightly violent approach,” he said.
He explained that William Golding’s follow-up book to the classic Lord of the Flies set in the same period, called The Inheritors, played a big role in his vision. Cumming recounted, “I finished that book and I thought, ‘Yes. One day I’m going to make this book.’ If I...

What was the first film that you saw that made you want to get into filmmaking and how did you go from film fan to filmmaker?
I can’t for sure nail down a specific film that made me want to be a filmmaker. When I was young, my father got us cable TV for the boxing PPV’s and then for HBO. We had a few dozen Ced’s, which led to a fairly wide bookshelf with a couple hundred VHS tapes, plus with a video store right down the street I would rent movies myself on the walk home from school. Plus, my brother and I must have gone to the movies with my mother at least once a month, maybe more. I read Fangoria and Gorezone regularly as a kid, and bought Tales From The Crypt Comics, I did book reports on movie novelizations.

Hell-bent upon finding evidence of ancient monsters in the modern world (often by exploring how they continue to be reflected in the raw stuff of human nature), Larry Fessenden launched his filmmaking career with a Frankenstein story, and he’s been working his way back to the subject ever since. Traces of Mary Shelley’s mad science can be found in many of the low-budget horror movies that his Glass Eye Pix has produced since 1985, and they’re even more apparent in the ones that he’s directed: From the ecological hubris of “The Last Winter” to the monster-is-us mythicism of “Wendigo” and the selfishness that percolates beneath all of his narratives and bubbled to the surface in “Beneath,” each of his features has dissected a severed limb from Shelley’s foundational story.
With “Depraved” — which is perhaps both his least expensive and most ambitious movie — Fessenden sews his entire body of work together.

Meet the new man. Glass Eye Pix has debuted a short festival teaser trailer for Depraved, the latest film from beloved indie filmmaker / actor Larry Fessenden. This is premiering at the What the Fest!? festival at the IFC Center this month, which is why there's a teaser out now. Described as the "best film version of the Frankenstein legend in decades", Fessenden's Depraved is a "meditative reimagining of the" Shelley's classic novel that "explores the crisis of masculinity and ideas about loneliness, memory and the subtle psychological shocks that shape us as individuals." The plot follows a disillusioned field surgeon suffering from Ptsd who endeavors to make a man out of body parts and bring him to life in a Brooklyn loft. The film stars Owen Campbell, Chloë Levine, Alex Breaux, David Call, Joshua Leonard, Ana Kayne, and Maria Dizzia. There's some good footage in this teaser - take a look.

What’s better than a modern take on Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein,” shot on the novel’s 200th anniversary? A modern take on “Frankenstein” set in Brooklyn. Veteran genre writer-director Larry Fessenden has teamed up with indie producer and fellow filmmaker Joe Swanberg for his unique vision of the literary classic. “Depraved” will make its world premiere as the opening night film of What the Fest!?, a genre festival put on by New York’s IFC Center.
IFC programmers promise it’s “the best film version of the Frankenstein legend in decades,” while an official press release called it a “meditative reimagining of the novel” that “explores the crisis of masculinity and ideas about loneliness, memory and the subtle psychological shocks that shape us as individuals.”

For the Trees: Zada’s Moody Locale Squandered by Feeble Narrative
We’ve come to expect studios to unbosom their less desirable horror trinkets during the dawning of every new year, and the annual tradition is alive and well with the equivocally titled The Forest from first time director Jason Zada. On a positive note, it’s a return to more traditional formatting, a move away from the found footage items we usually find released in this quarter (The Devil Inside; Devil’s Due), and it’s also not a remake or a dubious sequel (The Last Exorcism Part II). But Zada’s film is the second English language film revealed over the past year to waste its singularly spooky locale, Japan’s Aokigahara Forest at the base of Mt. Fuji (the first being Gus Van Sant’s Cannes blooper, Sea of Trees, which may explain this horror film’s...

Bloodsucking Bastards Blu-ray: "An action-packed vampire comedy in the vein of Office Space and Shaun of the Dead, Bloodsucking Bastards stars Fran Kranz (Cabin in the Woods) as Evan Sanders, a dutiful and overworked employee stuck at a soul-killing corporation with his beautiful girlfriend, Amanda (Emma Fitzpatrick, Significant Mother), and his slacker best friend Tim (Joey Kern, Beneath). Evan's world begins to crumble when Amanda dumps him and his boss, Ted (Joel Murray, God Bless America), hands his coveted promotion to his nemesis Max (Pedro Pascal, Game of Thrones). But just when Evan's convinced that life couldn't bite any harder, his office mates start going through disturbing changes… and bodies begin to pile up.

Sure, news that Slash and W. Axl Rose have mended broken fences to become friends once again, with the possibility of a true blue Guns N' Roses reunion tour on the horizon is huge! But maybe not as huge as an 80s slasher style horror movie coming from Slash himself! THR reveal that the guitarist is teaming up with Revolver Picture Company, and will produce the Untitled thriller, hoping to bring something new and completely unique to the horror genre.
Absolutely no plot details are being revealed to the public just yet, and it isn't known if the slasher movie will contain a musical element. Boogeyman 2 and Boogeyman 3 writer Brian Sieve was hired to pound out the screenplay, and has reportedly already turned in a draft. As Jurassic World bites a hole in our multiplexes, we compares its events to John Sayles' Jurassic Park IV script from a decade ago...
Nb: the following contains spoilers for Jurassic World.
For Universal, the success of Jurassic World is the $500m pay-off to a story which began well over a decade ago. Work on a third Jurassic Park sequel originally began after the release of Joe Johnston’s coolly-received Jurassic Park III way back in 2001, yet the film languished in a pre-production quagmire as writer after writer seemingly struggled to crack the story.
William Monahan (The Departed, Kingdom Of Heaven) was the first screenwriter to step up to the plate, announced at a time when Keira Knightley was reportedly in the running for a major role. Around that time, Jeff Goldblum and Richard Attenborough were also thought to be returning to their respective roles of Ian Malcom and John Hammond.

Stranger Danger: Roth & Amoedo Unveil Derivative Inclinations
Director Eli Roth continues his collaboration with the South American crew from Aftershock (2012), by producing writer Guillermo Amoedo’s sophomore directorial effort, The Stranger. The title is the filmmaker’s English language debut, previously helming a 2010 film Retorno. Unfortunately, the final result is about as mundane as its nebulous title would seem to indicate, slapped into a narrative as familiar as it is illogical. Still, technically speaking, it’s packaged better than some recent titles released from IFC Midnight (the 2013 Jeff Fahey starrer Beneath comes to mind). Those hoping for a dash of Roth’s predilection for intense splashes of violence may be disappointed, as Amodeo’s somber slow-burn never finds any such spark.

The Descent arguably made being stuck underground scary again, with intelligent use of the darkness and just a hint of claustrophobia half of the job of scaring the audience was done before the creatures even made an appearance on screen. Beneath may not want to be compared to Neil Marshall’s movie, but as a fan I can’t help but compare the two.
Beneath may claim it is inspired by true events, but we know that this is a statement that is used as a marketing tool to get attention but means nothing when it comes to historical fact. In the movie we see a crew of coal miners trapped 600 feet below the ground.

There's not much that's outright bad about Beneath, but as is so often the case with young film-makers, the absence of anything laugh-out-loud horrible doesn't always translate into something compellingly watchable. The "bottle" film is a nearly irresistible lure for the independent film-maker, what with the exceedingly low budget and promise of great returns (look no further than Buried), but the limited environment also presents challenges that are hard to equip for in film school (management of space, gradual acceleration of space). Though director Ben Ketai appears to make a valiant effort, he proves unequal to these challenges, and turns Beneath into something of a slog as a result.

Constantine takes a step in the right direction with this week's episode, which introduces Papa Midnite...
This review contains spoilers.
1.3 The Devil's Vinyl
Now that’s more like it! Constantine has found its legs this week, and while it hasn’t entirely shed the problems of the first two episodes, The Devil’s Vinyl offers a blend of horror, humour, and action that’s hard to argue with for entertainment value. Add the introduction of Hellblazer fan favorite Papa Midnite (Michael James Shaw) and this one comes out strong.
Aside from laying some ground rules and explaining the seemingly endless string of supernatural goodies in Constantine’s Mary Poppins bag, this third episode dispenses with the exposition that has bogged down the show thus far. This week, the monster of the week isn’t a front for world-building or character development, and it’s scarier and more believable for it.

Director Ben Ketai has two reasons to celebrate on Friday. Not only is it his birthday, but IFC Midnight has theatrically released his $2 million horror movie “Beneath,” which follows a group of coal miners who find themselves fighting for their lives underground. Repped by Apa and Circle of Confusion, Ketai co-created Crackle's hit series “Chosen” with Ryan Lewis, and recently signed a first-look with the online broadcaster. Ketai spoke with TheWrap's Jeff Sneider in advance of theatrical release of the film, sharing stories of his start, how he assembled his cast, the inherent challenges of shooting on a budget and what.

We Now Begin Our Descent: Ketai’s Debut a Minor Effort
Arriving decently dressed but in poor taste is writer/producer Ben Ketai’s directorial debut, Beneath, sharing its bland title with Larry Fessenden’s most recent indie horror film. This genre exploitation effort, which may eventually make a great double bill with Patricia Riggen’s forthcoming reenactment of the plight of the 33 Chilean miners from the 2010 Copiapo mining accident, often feels like a cheap knockoff of Neil Marshall’s The Descent, though Ketai’s adherence to the poker faced formula of And Then There Were None should satisfy those appreciative of commitment to ambience, no matter how generic the end product.
Samantha (Kelly Noonan) is an environmental lawyer who returns to her home town to celebrate her father George’s (Jeff Fahey) last day on the job due to declining health. Recording the celebratory efforts by interviewing several co-workers,...

In August 2010, a collapse at the San Jose Mine in the Atacama Desert trapped 33 Chileans nearly 2,500 feet underground, where they languished, awaiting rescue, for 69 days.
"It's a bitter truth of mining," writes Hector Tobar in a recent New Yorker profile of the incident, "that sometimes men are buried alive and die of starvation, their bodies never recovered."
That truth looms over the opening of Ben Ketai's horror film Beneath, as an outfit of American miners carts its way into the bowels of the Earth, music swelling around them portentously. Our players are perfunctorily introduced -- there's an agro meathead, a sensitive intellectual, an old-timer with one day left before retirement, and a young woman along for the ride -- and, after a bit of ingrat...

Available now on VOD and arriving in select theaters this week is Beneath, a claustrophobic thriller centered on a group of coal miners as they struggle for survival following a catastrophic cave-in. Things go from really bad to even worse when the survivors start hearing mysterious noises and suffering horrifying visions. With bodies piling up and the cave’s air supply growing more toxic by the minute they must figure out who or what is after them. Beneath stars Jeff Fahey, Joey Kern, Kelly Noonan, Brent Briscoe and Eric Etebari. I recently had the opportunity to jump on the phone for an exclusive interview with Jeff Fahey. He talked about what attracted him to the project, shooting on a dirty, cramped sound stage, and the challenge of playing a character with a physical ailment. He also talked about the joy of being a character actor, bouncing between film and stage productions,...

*there are some minor spoilers here. Director: Ben Ketai. Writers: Patrick Doody and Chris Valenziano. Cast: Brent Briscoe, Kurt Caceres, Eric Etebari and Jeff Fahey. Ben Ketai's (30 Days of Night) second feature film as director is the horror title Beneath. This film was recently released on video-on-demand, through IFC Films. And, this is one horror film that viewers should take notice of. Dealing with trapped miners deep below ground, the writing team of Patrick Doody and Chris Valenziano introduce a supernatural element, born of hell. Lots of thrills can be found in Beneath, with the lighting standing out as the film's strongest element. There is a lot of mystery and a lot of tension in this exciting, horror outing. The story primarily focuses on the character Samantha (Kelly Noonan). Sam is visiting her dad from New York and Sam's dad is close to retirement. As a fond gesture, Sam...

In his psychological indie thriller Beneath, director Ben Ketai takes us deep into a collapsed coal mine where a trapped group of miners, led by iconic genre actor Jeff Fahey, struggle with both their sanity and their ability to survive their horrific state intact.
With Beneath currently available on VOD platforms and hitting theaters on July 25th, Daily Dead recently chatted with both Ketai and Fahey about their experiences collaborating on the award-winning project and here’s what the duo had to say about Beneath during our interview earlier this week.
Thanks for chatting with me today- the movie was really intense and I very much enjoyed the performances as well. What was about this story that attracted the both of you to it before you came on board Beneath?

Beneath is a new underground (literally) thriller starring Jeff Fahey as George Marsh, a longtime coal miner who goes down for “one last mission” – and when it comes to movies, you know how those usually go.
Along for the descent into darkness is George’s daughter, Samantha, played by Kelly Noonan, and a slew of soon-to-be-slain coworkers.
Dread Central got the chance to chat with Fahey and the film’s director, Ben Ketai, recently, and the highlights are below.
The first thing I wanted to know was, where was the film shot? It looks like an actual location. Fahey told me that although it looks like a real cave, the entire thing was built on a set.
“We were above ground,” he said. “The other part we can act. Sometimes realism helps, but with this, we had so many things to help us get into that mindset.” Such as, working...

Trapped underground by a massive collapse, a crew of coal miners struggles for survival and sanity. We have an exclusive clip from the new thriller Beneath, which teases this horrifying true story, setting up the events that will lead to an intense struggle for survival. Check out Jeff Fahey, Joey Kern and Kelly Noonan as the walls come crashing down on them, on VOD this Friday, June 27, before its debut in theaters July 25.
Inspired by actual events: at a coal mine in a blue-collar town it's the last day of work for veteran miner George Marsh (Jeff Fahey). His daughter Samantha (Kelly Noonan), a feisty environmental lawyer whose politics are bitterly opposed by her father, celebrates the occasion by accompanying him underground. She's escorted by old flame Randy Bennings (Joey Kern); no sooner do they descend to the coal face, however, than a drilling machine malfunctions and punches through a supporting wall.

What is the point of prefacing your horror film with text stating that it’s based on a true story? Obviously it’s meant to add additional degrees of terror — this really happened and it could happen to you too! — but while a film like The Amityville Horror benefited from the claim because its veracity was difficult to confirm back in the pre-internet days of 1979 the truth behind today’s movies can be ascertained with a few clicks of a mouse. What I’m saying is please stop opening your horror films with onscreen text pretending any of what we’re about to see is true. It’s dumb, and it more often than not shows a desperation on the part of filmmakers who lack confidence in the quality and power of their actual film. Of course, if you absolutely insist on doing it anyway it helps to follow it up with a strong enough movie that...

We've got a fun trailer to share with you for a psychological horror thriller called Beneath. The film was inspired by actual events that follow a retiring miner who picked the wrong day to bring his daughter to work. I think it looks like it could be a really good movie, but I enjoy this kind of stuff. Here's the synopsis:
A crew of coal miners becomes trapped 600 feet below ground after a disastrous collapse. As the air grows more toxic and time runs out, they slowly descend into madness and begin to turn on one another. Inspired by true events.
The movie seems to have a similar tone to films such as The Descent and The Thing. Beneath was directed by Ben Ketai from a script by Patrick Doody and Chris Valenziano. It will be released on VOD/Digital platforms on June 27th, and hits select theaters on July 25th.

"I want you to take a deep breath..." Scared of being stuck in a cave? Are you claustrophobic? This isn't the trailer for you. IFC Films has debuted a trailer for Ben Ketai's Beneath, not to be confused with the other Beneath horror directed by Larry Fessenden. This one is about coal miners who end up trapped after a mine collapse, and one of them is a very pretty coal miner's daughter (go figure), played by Kelly Noonan. The cast includes Jeff Fahey, Eric Etebari, Kurt Caceres, Brent Briscoe. While the synopses seem to hint there's a The Descent like creepiness in the cave, this actually just seems like a solid psychological thriller. Here's the first official trailer for Ben Ketai's Beneath, direct from IFC (via SlashFilm): Synopsis for Beneath from IMDb: A crew of coal miners becomes trapped 600 feet below ground after a disastrous collapse. "Beneath" is a new thriller that is being billed as "inspired by true events." "Inspired," in this case, is a much more accurate term than "based on." The true events in reference surround the catastrophic 2013 cave in of a Bracket Coal mine that trapped a team of miners countless stories beneath the Earth's surface. From here, the film takes a fair share of creative liberties, turning it into a haunting claustrophobic thriller as the miners await their uncertain fate. Directed by first time feature director Ben Ketai ("30 Days of Night" mini-series) and co-written by horror team Patrick Doody and Chris Valenziano, "Beneath" seeks to dramatize the event that captured the world's attention, and take advantage of a rare opportunity to make a supernatural thriller "inspired by" actual events. "Beneath" is being distributed by IFC Films and has been slated for an October 8th release, right in the heart of horror season.

What is worse than being trapped 600 feet below ground, after a mining tunnel collapses? Well, you could be tasked with surviving a serial killer, as well. This is the horrifying scenario for director Ben Ketai's ("Chosen") Beneath. This title will release on June 27th, 2014, through Video-on-demand and IFC Midnight's online platform. And now, a second trailer is available for Beneath! The clip shows a mining crew, trapped deep below ground. They take refuge in a shelter, after a shaft collapses. Noxious fumes are released into the air. Then, the remaining crew see a shadowy figure, looming about outside. The figure is armed with a pickaxe and the gore is set to fly, unless someone can face this killer and win. This latest trailer is an exciting one. Fans of horror are encouraged to look at the clip below, as survivors try to defend themselves, from multiple threats. The film...

The only thing worse than being trapped underground is being trapped underground with a bunch of crazed killers on the lose in an enclosed space and Beneath (not to be confused with
Larry Fessenden's movie of the same title) presents exactly that.
Ben Ketai's claustrophobic horror movie follows a crew of miners and one of their daughters into a regular work shift that takes a turn for the worst when the mine collapses and the crew is stuck 600 feet below ground. Not satisfied that the stress of getting out will provide enough terror, the story seems to jump ahead a little to show the affects that the toxic air has on crew and their slow descent into madness.

IFC Midnight announced a June 13 VOD release for Alex de la Iglesia’s horror comedy Witching & Bitching. Witching's ensemble cast boasts some of Spain’s biggest film and TV stars, such as Mario Casas (I Want You), Hugo Silva (Sex, Parties and Lies), and Carmen Maura, who earned a Best Actress award at San Sebastian in 2000 for her role in Commonwealth. Further cast members are Terele Pavez, Carolina Bang, Secun de la Rosa, Pepon Nieto, and Jaime Ordonez.
The flick centers on a band of thieves trying to flee to France after purloining 25,000 gold rings from a Spanish city. A curse is placed on them, and they fall into the clutches of the witches of the Navarrese town of Zugarramurdi.
