After getting acquainted with Avatar: The Last Airbender, most fans must have been utterly convinced that indeed Aang is the strongest Air Nomad Avatar. However, the storyline of that universe is vast, and although Twinkle Toes (as Toph calls him) may be an Air Nomad way more powerful than the very first Avatar, he isn’t the strongest one out there.
Aang in the Avatar universe
Instead, the title of the strongest Air Nomad goes to one other person who struggled even more than Twinkle Toes throughout her life: Malu. Although she never appeared in the animated series of the Avatar universe, there was no other Air Nomad more powerful than her. What’s more, she didn’t even have a teacher, to begin with, and reached these levels of strength by herself!

This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender.
With all the changes that were necessary to translate the original animated Avatar: The Last Airbender into live-action, the Netflix series was still largely faithful to the source material. Plots were condensed, swapped around, or altered, but the same general arc of the season held in place. Aang and the gang traveled to the Northern Water Tribe as they were pursued by Zuko and members of the Fire Nation.
Along the way, however, there were changes and the biggest one that bookended either side of the first season was Sozin’s Comet. In the original series the comet was introduced part way into the first season, explained to Aang by Avatar Roku. He laid out that the comet’s power was able to be harnessed by Firebenders, amplifying their powers. 100 years previously Fire Lord Sozin used this to start the Hundred Year War and,...

The series seems to have gone as quickly as it came, building up anticipation and leaving with a somewhat disappointed tone. While reviews have been mixed, fans have nonetheless appreciated it since it hasn’t thankfully repeated the disaster that The Last Airbender (movie) was.

One of the most impressive things about Nickelodeon’s classic Avatar: The Last Airbender is the immediacy of its storytelling. In fact, we’ve previously argued that Avatar is one of the few “structurally perfect” TV shows because of that immediacy.
Not one to overstay its welcome, the initial run of Avatar: The Last Airbender features three seasons (all with a different element as a subtitle) of 20-21 episodes each. Additionally, the show runs through its plot with admirable economy due to a built in running clock in its premise: Sozin’s Comet.
In the Atla canon, Sozin’s Comet is a celestial object that passes by Earth every one hundred years. When it does, the Fire Nation’s many firebenders are able to harness its energy, increasing their power as much as a hundredfold. When Avatar: The Last Airbender opens, Sozin’s Comet is roughly a year away, meaning...

Every year numerous films are overlooked, underrated, and lost in the shuffle. 2023 was no exception. Several sci-fi movies with merit failed to garner attention, find an audience, or receive a fair appraisal. Such outcomes can be attributed to market saturation with similar themes and concepts, exemplified by this year's surplus of films centered around AI or featuring talented actors who lack significant box office appeal. Alternatively, a film may be flawed, resulting in mixed reviews and audience reactions, yet still possessing commendable qualities.
For the purposes of this list, "underrated" refers to sci-fi films that received relatively mixed or poor responses from both critics and audiences, with a focus on those that lacked significant attention or acclaim. We'll review the notable qualities of these films and explore the reasons behind their inadequate recognition, whether it's one of Marvel's unfairly maligned sequels or a quirky, futuristic sci-fi spin on conceiving a child,...

Sam Esmail made references to his previous work in 'Leave the World Behind'.The 46-year-old director has helmed the new Netflix apocalyptic thriller that stars Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali and included nods to his previous projects – including the movie 'Comet' and the TV series 'Mr. Robot' - in the film's plot.Sam told The Hollywood Reporter: "It felt pretty natural, and to be honest with you, I didn't just do it with 'Mr. Robot'. There are little nods to everything I've worked on, from 'Homecoming' and 'Comet' to 'Robot'."I fancy myself as creating my own little universe whenever I make a film, so I thought to myself, 'Why not connect them all?' It's more fun that way."The movie tells the story of the Sandford family and their disastrous weekend getaway at the Long Island home of G.

[This story contains spoilers for Leave the World Behind.]
Sam Esmail’s Leave the World Behind currently ranks atop Netflix’s film chart, and longtime fans of the filmmaker are now decoding its place in his greater universe of storytelling.
Ten minutes into the thriller, Mr. Robot buffs likely picked up on a familiar site: a yellow emergency preparedness kit with the branding of the USA series’ villainous corporation, E-Corp. That bucket would serve as one of several early signals that a cyberattack would incite the film’s imminent disaster and systematic destabilization of the United States. Esmail had already wanted to make a disaster film that revolved around a cyberattack, and when he read Rumaan Alam’s novel, Leave the World Behind, he knew he could merge that idea with his existing universe of stories, not just Mr. Robot.

A self-published novelist is claiming Adam McKay ripped off a book he wrote for his 2021 Netflix movie Don’t Look Up in a new lawsuit.
William Collier claims that in 2007, he wrote a novel called Stanley’s Comet, which was later self-published in 2012. The suit describes Stanley’s Comet as a “dark comedy” about low-level NASA scientists who discover a giant comet hurtling towards Earth, but their attempts to warn the public about the danger are dismissed and downplayed by politicians and media figures.
Collier alleges that McKay had access to his book.

Ethan Hawke and Julia Roberts are bracing for the apocalypse after Mahershala Ali informs them that the world as they know it is ending.
Such is the premise for star-studded Netflix thriller “Leave the World Behind,” directed by “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail. The film is adapted from Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel of the same name which was published during the height of the pandemic.
The official synopsis reads: Amanda (Julia Roberts) and her husband Clay (Ethan Hawke), rent a luxurious home for the weekend with their kids, Archie (Charlie Evans) and Rose (Farrah Mackenzie). Their vacation is soon upended when two strangers — G.H. (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la Herrold) — arrive in the night, bearing news of a mysterious cyberattack and seeking refuge in the house they claim is theirs. The two families reckon with a looming disaster that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone...

If cyberattacks and storms are any indication, writer-director Sam Esmail’s “Leave the World Behind” looks to expand upon the more lo-fi terrors of Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel of the same name.
That’s surely helped by a big budget, as this is a Netflix production from the Obamas’ Higher Ground productions banner, plus major star backing: Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Kevin Bacon, plus “Industry” breakout actress Myha’la Herrold. In the book, an Airbnb vacation goes awry when an unknown apocalyptic event seems to shutter the world around the core characters.

Have you finished tearing up, Riverdale fans? The ending of Riverdale Season 7 Episode 19 hit like a ton of emotional bricks.
The penultimate episode of Riverdale was a satisfying and touching trip down memory lane.
"Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Six: The Golden Age of Television" balanced both winding down the stories of Riverdale Season 7 and honoring the series. If we didn't have a series finale coming up, this could've been a sweet end to the story.
Much like Tabitha's angelic twist, this chapter weaves both worlds together -- the two sides of Riverdale we have come to know: (1) the six seasons of the original Riverdale and (2) the reboot set in 1955.
We can't get into the group's big decision without discussing how they've come so far.
Having the town right their wrongs was a long time coming.
People like Dr. Werthers and Principal Featherhead had been controlling things with an iron fist.

Farscape fans may be few, but they are proud and Peacock garnered some deserved plaudits late last year when all four seasons of the show, plus The Peacekeeper Wars miniseries, arrived on the streamer.
It’s just nice to be thought about, isn’t it? It’s a sign that someone somewhere in the industry still cares about this gleefully anarchic space opera of ours.
With that in mind, it seems like a pretty good time to list exactly where you can stream Farscape in the US and UK right now, including a fair few outlets where you can get it for free.
For convenience, we’d recommend Plex where you can stream Farscape on-demand for free in HD in both the US and the UK. For the fandom, we’d recommend streaming it live on Shout! Factory TV, which is also available in both territories. Shout! Factory is the...

Will Forte is one of the most reliable names in comedy. Whether it's leading the absurd action of "MacGruber," lending his voice to animated comedy in the likes of "Rick and Morty" and "The Simpsons," or bringing to life various incarnations of Abraham Lincoln in "Clone High," "The Lego Movie," and "America: The Motion Picture," you can always count on Forte to inspire plenty of hilarity. But there's also a gentle charm to his presence when he's not driving the comedy bus. That's what makes him the perfect choice to play a father in the Sundance-selected family comedy "Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out."
Directed by Jake Van Wagoner, the film follows teen girl Itsy Levan, who finds herself suddenly stuck in the middle of nowhere after her home-flipping parents move their family out of the big city. At her new school, Itsy meets the quirky but intelligent Calvin Kipler,...

Nick Hakim seems to inherently understand the value of silence, of sparseness. This post doesn't contain major spoilers for "Barbarian," but you shouldn't read it until you've seen the movie.
I remember exactly how I felt the first time I looked up the new horror-mystery "Barbarian" and found out that Justin Long was inexplicably part of its cast. If I could distill it down to one word, I'd use elated, but intrigued and unsettled came up as close seconds and thirds. The hilarious actor is known for his interesting choices when it comes to the projects he signs onto — films like "The Wave" and "Comet" come to mind — so his inclusion in the film had me curious from the jump about the kind of terrible rabbit hole this movie was going to force us down (that's a compliment).
One of the most interesting parts about Long's inclusion in the film is the fact that he is almost entirely omitted from the marketing campaign.

The USA Network hacking thriller "Mr. Robot" is one of the best and most underrated dramas of the past decade. Initially, "Mr. Robot" seemed like a risky project. While writer-director Sam Esmail established his merits as a creator with his highly underrated feature film directorial debut, "Comet," he had yet to prove himself as the showrunner of a complex narrative series. Rami Malek was rising star thanks to his role on HBO's "The Pacific," but the character of Elliot Alderson was very different from anything that he had done before.
All of these concerns evaporated after the first season reached its conclusion. With its stylistic direction, relevant social themes, electrifying soundtrack, and shocking twists, "Mr. Robot" was unlike anything else on television. It seems closer to an arthouse film than anything. The show contains allusions to such classics as "Blade Runner," "The Matrix," "Pi," and "Taxi Driver." "Mr. Robot" continued...

Released in 1984, hardly pretended to be anything other than what it was — a low-budget zombie movie with a wicked sense of humor and a couple of fierce females as its heroines. Despite the film’s budgetary limitations, it became a fan favorite, with a respectable showing at the box office and, as time went […]

In their third collaboration following Don’s Party and The Club, David Williamson and Bruce Beresford are developing Nearer the Gods, a biopic about Sir Isaac Newton, the eccentric 17th Century English scientist and mathematician.
Adapted from Williamson’s play which was staged by the Queensland Theatre Co. in 2018, the drama laced with humour will trace Newton’s struggles to persuade the sceptical Royal Society to publish his revolutionary discoveries including formulating the laws of motion and universal gravitation.
The comedy revolves the latter part of his life, much of which he dedicated to theology and predicting the end of the world and the second coming of Christ in the year 2060.

It's almost hard to believe an hour with so many happy endings wasn't the season finale!
Our review of Good Witch Season 5 Episode 9 delves into the magic of Middleton and how a 200-year-old comet can remind some that happiness doesn't have to be as fleeting as a shooting star.
There were several messages at play during "Comet."
One of them was that no matter how far away you go or for how long you're away, despite what Thomas Wolfe may tell you, you can go home again.
And if you're Nick, you can even take a bit of the new home you've come to love with you when you leave.
It's finally hitting home for both Grace and Nick that the lives they've always known are coming to an end.

Following the success of Marvel Studios female superhero "Captain Marvel", DC and Warners continue developing a live-action "Supergirl" for the big screen, written by Oren Uziel ("Cloverfield Paradox") that alongside moments of drama, could also include 'Comet' the 'Superhorse', 'Krypto' the 'Superdog' and 'Streaky' the 'Supercat':
'Supergirl' aka 'Kara Zor-El', debuted in DC's "Action Comics" #252 (May 1959), created by writer Otto Binder and illustrator Al Plastino...

"...she is the last survivor of 'Argo City', which had survived the explosion of the planet 'Krypton' and drifted through space.
"During the roughly thirty years Argo City traveled through space, Zor-El met and married 'Alura', daughter of 'In-Ze', who in turn bore their daughter, 'Kara' and the adolescent Kara was sent to Earth by Zor-El in a rocket, to be raised by her cousin 'Kal-El'.

Rachel Chavkin has been here before. Under her direction, Hadestown, Anaïs Mitchell’s gorgeous musical that sets the mythical tales of Orpheus, Eurydice, Hades and Persephone in – above ground – a stylized New Orleans and – below ground – a coal-mining hellscape – has garnered 14 Tony Award nominations. That’s the most nominations of any production this year, just as the Chavkin-directed Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812 fronted the nomination pack (with 12) in 2017.
So yes, the Tony-nominated Chavkin has been here before, but what does it say about Broadway that she is, in a sense, alone in her field: She’s the only woman to direct a Broadway musical this season.
In this candid, wide-ranging conversation, Chavkin spoke to Deadline about Broadway, about what women like herself and Anaïs Mitchell bring to the theater, about Hadestown specifically, and about what she’d like to do next.

“Shameless” alum Emmy Rossum has signed a first-look deal with Universal Content Productions, a rep for NBCUniversal tells TheWrap.
As part of the deal, Rossum will develop premium scripted content for the studio under her own Composition 8 production banner.
The actress and director departed Showtime’s “Shameless” in late August after nine seasons of playing Fiona Gallagher. Her husband, “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail, recently renewed his own deal at Ucp in February — together, they are developing a new limited series starring Rossum called “Angelyne,” based on an investigation by The Hollywood Reporter writer Gary Baum of the notorious L.A. billboard fixture of the same name.

After directing the entirety of its first season, Sam Esmail will not be back to helm “Homecoming” Season 2. The news, first reported by Variety, follows January’s announcement that Julia Roberts will not return either. Both remain onboard the acclaimed Amazon series as executive producers, however. “Homecoming” received critical acclaim and a slew of awards and nominations upon its premiere last fall, including Golden Globe nods in the Best Television Series — Drama, Best Actor, and Best Actress categories.
Eli Horowitz, who co-created the podcast on which “Homecoming” is based, praised Esmail last year by saying that he “just knew that [Esmail] would bring in an inherently visual style to it, that there was no repressing that, which was exciting. And then, the way he thought about the bone to the story was very in tune with how we always did.”

Take another look @ super-dog 'Krypto' coming to the rescue of 'Batman', 'Superman' and 'Wonder Woman':
Although animal members of "The Legion Of Super-Pets" had appeared in various comic books throughout the years, with super-dog 'Krypto' debuting in 1955, the super-animals made their official team debut in DC's "Adventure Comics" #293 (February 1962).
The team roster included 'Comet' the 'Super-Horse', 'Streaky' the 'Super-Cat', 'Krypto' the 'Super-Dog', 'Beppo' the 'Super-Monkey' from 'Krypton' and shape-changer 'Proty II'.
Significant appearances include issue #322 (July 1964) when 'Proty II' is initiated into the team and issue #343 (April 1966), with the 'Super-Pets' helping the 'Legion of Super-Heroes' battle the 'Luck Lords'.
Issue #364 (January 1968) was titled, "The Revolt of the Super-Pets!"
The team rarely appeared after the Silver Age except for 'Krypto' who become a supporting character in various "Superman" comic book titles.
Other versions of the 'Super-Pets' appeared in "DC Super...

For quite some time Justin Long has been the face of the middling romantic comedy genre. The actor has led a string of relatively low-profile films about down on their luck dudes pining for lost loves and manic pixie dream girls (“Going The Distance,” “A Case Of You,” “Comet”). But while Long-fronted pictures haven’t always fared well (“Comet” was at least interesting), he has mostly managed to remain a welcome, if quantifiable presence, thus giving us reason to remain hopeful for his upcoming dramedy “Literally, Right Before Aaron,” which pairs him with the delightful Cobie Smulders.
