The Black Phone 2 is in the works!
It was previously revealed that the Blumhouse horror film sequel was coming in summer 2025, and it has since been confirmed that director/co-writer Scott Derrickson is back on to pen the sequel alongside C. Robert Cargill.
The two writers will also produce, alongside Blumhouse’s Jason Blum.
In the first movie, Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.

One of the most reliable partnerships in modern spooky cinema is that between director Scott Derrickson, and writer C. Robert Cargill. Together, the pair delivered Sinister, Doctor Strange, and The Black Phone, and they’re currently working together on a script for The Black Phone 2. But beyond that, the duo has a new project lined up together – a new take on legendary noir thriller classic The Night Of The Hunter. Davis Grubb’s novel was previously adapted for the screen in 1955 by director Charles Laughton, and now nearly 70 years on will be getting a whole new life on the big screen.
The new version of The Night Of The Hunter has both Derrickson and Cargill on writing duties, and Derrickson is officially on board to direct for Universal. No casting has been announced yet, but the story revolves around a serial killer who hides behind his veneer as a preacher,...

Scott Derrickson is set to adapt Davis Grubb’s novel that was turned into a classic film back in 1955. More on The Night Of The Hunter adaptation below.
While we’re still waiting for The Black Phone 2 to hit cinemas next year, director Scott Derrickson is adding another project to his growing roster of films he wants to make.
Not only is he directing the star-studded The Gorge, but Derrickson will now also reunite with his frequent collaborator, writer C Robert Cargill, to re-adapt The Night Of The Hunter. The duo previously made Sinister (2012), Sinister 2 (2015), Doctor Strange (2016) and The Black Phone (2021) together. The news of their latest project comes to us via The Hollywood Reporter.
Based on a 1953 novel by Davis Grubb, The Night Of The Hunter tells the story of Harry Powell, an ex-con who poses as a preacher as he sets out to find his old cellmate’s hidden cash.

Scott Derrickson is set to direct a new adaptation of Davis Grubb’s classic 1953 crime novel, The Night of the Hunter.
The Night of the Hunter tells the twisted story of Harry Powell, a serial killer who poses as a preacher and marries a widow in order to get his hands on her deceased husband’s hidden fortune. Unfortunately, Powell’s new stepchildren, John and Pearl, grow suspicious and quickly become his targets. The novel was previously adapted in 1955 with Robert Mitchum starring as Powell and delivering one of his very best performances. Although the film is now considered to be one of the best of all time (and one of my personal favourites), it received negative reviews upon its release. Acclaimed actor Charles Laughton made his directorial debut with the film, but he took the failure personally and never directed another movie again.

Last week saw the release of a pretty terrible Blumhouse horror movie in Imaginary. This followed their other terrible outing this year, Night Swim. Both of these were PG-13 ventures which failed on nearly every conceivable level. This is the same company that produced great horror films like Get Out, The Invisible Man, and The Black Phone. Those films had such imagination and respect for the genre. So what the hell happened?
The biggest issue with Blumhouse these days is that there’s no apparent passion behind these PG-13, middle-of-the-road horror movies like what we’ve seen from them this year. They used to take unproven filmmakers, give them a chance with a low budget, and get results. Sure, those results would vary, but there was at least some kind of momentum that was more than just profit-based. Because the Blumhouse of new seems to just be chasing trends. What’s that?...

The reports came from Deadline after filmmaker Chad Stahelski inked a new deal with Lionsgate.
Keanu Reeves as John Wick
Currently overseeing the entire franchise, John Wick’s Chad Stahelski is said to be working with Ballerina director Len Wiseman. Focusing on the additional action sequences for the film is what apparently got the spinoff delayed by another year.

Exclusive: FX has handed a pilot order to The Sensitive Kind, a high-profile drama project starring and executive produced by Ethan Hawke and created and executive produced by Sterlin Harjo, co-creator, executive producer and showrunner of the network’s acclaimed series Reservation Dogs.
The Sensitive Kind marks a reunion — Hawke guest starred in Reservation Dogs as Rick Miller in the series’ penultimate episode “Elora’s Dad,” playing Elora Danan’s (Devery Jacobs) father she had never met.
Created by Harjo, The Sensitive Kind is a Tulsa noir about a guy (Hawke) who knows too much.
Harjo also serves as writer and director on the pilot, which he and Hawke executive produce with Garrett Basch. The project falls under Harjo’s overall deal with FX Productions, which is the studio.

Director Scott Derrickson’s adaptation of the Joe Hill short story The Black Phone was well-received by critics and the general audience alike. 83% of the reviews listed on Rotten Tomatoes are positive, and more importantly it earned over $161 million at the box office on a budget of just under $20 million. The Black Phone doesn’t lend itself to being sequelized all that well. The story stands on its own and is wrapped up by the time the end credits start rolling… but when something is as successful as this movie was, that opens the sequel door. Indeed, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions has announced that The Black Phone 2 will be released on June 27, 2025 – and the intention is that this sequel will be the “launch of a sinister new franchise.” How is this been possible?

Back in October, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions announced that The Black Phone 2 will be receiving a theatrical release on June 27, 2025, marking the “launch of a sinister new franchise.” Soon after, it was revealed that the sequel will see the return of Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon) as Finney Shaw, Madeleine McGraw (Secrets of Sulphur Springs) as Finney’s sister Gwen, Jeremy Davies (Justified) as their dad Terrence, and Miguel Mora, whose only previous credit is The Black Phone, as Robin, a friend of Finney’s who was killed in the first movie. Plus, yes, Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight) will be reprising the role of the child-killer known as The Grabber. The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson had said he would only return for a sequel if Hawke did as well… and after Hawke was confirmed to be returning, we learned that Derrickson will indeed be directing The Black Phone 2.

The Black Phone 2 is confirmed for release in the summer of 2025, with the original creatives returning for the new film.
Director Scott Derrickson came to box office prominence in particular through his success in horror cinema, with the film Sinister notably. That then got him onto the Marvel payroll, with Doctor Strange, before ultimately declining the opportunity to return for Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. Sam Raimi took that particular job on instead, to middling results.
Instead, Scott Derrickson focused on making a horror movie, the box office success The Black Phone, that gave a meaty role to Ethan Hawke amongst its many qualities. It’s been known for a little while now that there were plans for a follow up to the movie, and now comes the confirmation of The Black Phone 2.

Casting has been revealed for the upcoming The Black Phone 2!
The Blumhouse horror film is getting a sequel that is set to hit theaters in the summer of 2025, and we are now finding out which stars will be back for the next installment.
Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are returning to pen the sequel, and they’ll produce as well, alongside Jason Blum. At this time, it’s currently unknown if Scott will also serve as director again.
In the first film, Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.

Somehow, The Grabber returned. Ever since the moment "The Black Phone" landed in theaters and promptly became the latest in a long line of excellent horror movies to overperform at the box office, a sequel to director Scott Derrickson and frequent writing partner C. Robert Cargill's smash hit has felt like a fait accompli. After quite a lot of speculation and even a major public reversal on Derrickson's part, those rumors finally became a reality earlier this year when it was officially confirmed that "The Black Phone 2" was in the works. At the time, it seemed like any potential follow-up would have to adjust the scope of its story, either to focus on surviving characters like Mason Thames' young Finney Blake and his sister Gwen (played by Madeleine McGraw), new protagonists altogether, or (dare I say it) Ethan Hawke's sinister kidnapper and murderer known as The Grabber...

Looking back, it's no wonder "Labyrinth" bombed at the box office. The last feature film directed by the late, great Jim Henson is just too inspiredly bizarre to have ever stood a chance of catching on with a mainstream audience right away, much less at the height of the Reagan era when it originally came out in 1986. It took many years of young people singing along to "Magic Dance" during slumber parties and coming to recognize their own sexual awakening right along with the then-teenaged Jennifer Connelly as Sarah for the film to become the cult classic it is today.
Indeed, dark, twisted, and occasionally sensual fantasy films that struggle to catch on with the masses before finding a niche audience were very much Henson's bag in the '80s. His and Frank Oz's 1982 feature film "The Dark Crystal" was also a financial dud that enjoyed a long...
