The Best Episode of The Walking Dead So Far
claudio_carvalho3 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The Governor abducts Hershel and Michonne and convinces his people that they should take the prison for them, telling that they are killers. He bombs the prison with a tank and summons Rick, telling that he should leave the prison with the survivors. Rick does not accept the proposal and tells that they will fight and the noise will bring walkers to the area. Meanwhile Lilly is alone with Megan and a walker bites her girl. The Governor decapitates Hershel initiating a war with tragic conclusion for both groups.

"Too Far Gone" is the best episode of The Walking Dead so far, with drama, action, suspense and lots of walkers. The bad choice of the group in selecting their leader leads everybody to a tragic conclusion. They should have thought in the consequences of a bad scenario before choosing the Governor. It is heartbreaking to see Hershel being slaughtered by the Governor and great to see Michonne stabbing him and Lilly putting a bullet on his head (I hope). As usual, the series ends in its climax and unfortunately the sequel is only in February 2014. My vote is ten.

Title (Brazil): "Too Far Gone"

Note: On 15 April 2016, I saw this show again.

Jesus Christ! What an episode.
andydavidh1 December 2013
Before I start, do not worry for I will not give away any spoilers. The best way to watch this episode is to not know a thing about what's going to happen and just let your mind go with the episode

I personally see this as the best Walking Dead episode to date. Even better than Shane's transformation in Season 2 and i know that is saying a lot and this is because of the emotions, the unexpected and just the outright confrontation that makes you root like you've never rooted

This is my first ever review and I just wanted to share my views on an absolute, brilliant mid-season finale. ROLL ON FEBRUARY

I never rate episodes but...

I rarely rate episodes individually but when this episode finished I just needed to come and leave a 10/10 to this masterpiece. An episode full of emotions and feeling. I could watch this episode once and again, it's so well done. Probably the best episode of TWD until now.

"Liar" - what did the Governor actually mean
simonize8502 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
"Liar" - with that one word, the Governor unleashes the dogs of war.

At best he could achieve a pyrrhic victory, and secure the prison but at a considerable loss to the families he has sworn to serve and protect.

So were the writers, those most excellent fellows, so obvious that we should believe that word was directed at Rick. No, in that one moment, the Governor reverted to type, and accepted his self, well before that awful moment when Lilly arrived, bearing the torn body of her daughter.

The Governor listened but did not hear what Rick had to say: eloquently, passionately, and without ego. Acceptance, co-existence rather than apocalypse now.

No wonder then that the sacrificial lamb - Hershel - had that beatific smile on his face. He understood the changes in Rick the man, Rick the leader, and was well pleased, proud at the man's growth.

Yes, the Governor was the liar.

Here in Canada we might ask, who's the liar? is the mayor of one of our most prominent cities; are they senators appointed rather than elected. Of the world are the liars the leaders and the dictators who use military power and fascist policies to ensure they shout the loudest and no one else can be heard.

I am a 63 year old male; this series continues to speak to me, loud and clear.

WE choose our leaders, and we choose who to follow: we get what we deserve.

Character development, great acting, and so much more.
bigdaddylewis942 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This episode has got to be one of the most exciting and darkest episodes to date. I did not expect any of which was going to happen in this episode. If you are a complete fan and have read the comics, you would be awfully familiar with this episode. The governor trying to take over the prison. Judith's character exiting the show. It's all basically similar to the comics, but with it's own twists. This is arguably this best episode of "The Walking Dead" history. There was so much going on in this episode, it was almost hard to take it all in. I could literally feel my heart pounding harder and my breathing patterns were not a pattern at all. It flip flops with your emotions and that's the key to a perfect, gem of a show.

The one thing that really makes this show so great is the level of acting supplied by these talented individuals. My personal favorite: Andrew Lincoln. He is such an amazing talent. When he found Judith's car seat without her in it, I could no help but to feel bad for him after his reaction. It's so realistic and perfect and I don't think he gets enough credit for it. The way that he took back leadership when forced to do so by the governor was great. The speech he gave to the governors army about being able to come back from the things they've done, it was very cool to watch. There's one thing I know for a fact is that Lincoln does not hold anything back. He gives it the best he possibly can no matter who is watching or how it makes him look. This man needs an Oscar or something for the performances he puts on.

The Governor Vs The Prison
mrxelement2 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Holy in the mother of Jesus Christ... This episode was the most intense, epic, thrilling episode I've ever seen in the Walking Dead. They really go far out and it shows really well how it progressed. Season 4 proves to be on the best Walking Dead seasons judging by this episode. The insane amount of blood spilling everywhere from top top bottom from an all out bloody war-zone between Rick and The Governor. I was sweating not knowing who's gonna die but sadly Hershel became on the the victims of The Governor's hostages and didn't make it. It's very sad to see Hershel die a very brutal death by The Governor. So many surprise in this episode its awesome! All I have to say is that this episode had some major balls!

Kudos to the Walking Dead creators and writers.

After a week full of incredible amounts of hype, "The Walking Dead" delivered with easily its best episode EVER, bar none

Warning: Spoilers
FULL REVIEW AT http://www.ign.com/blogs/ao66/

After a week full of incredible amounts of hype, "The Walking Dead" delivered with easily its best episode EVER, bar none. This was really built up to be the biggest episode of the show, and it was not only that, but so much more. The bullets flew, explosions rang, but emotions were also at an all-time high with shocking deaths and horrifying moments. Half-way through the 4th season, this show has fully realized its potential of delivering both high emotion and high intensity....... After this episode ended, I sat in my chair, staring at the TV with my jaw wide open and trying to digest what I just saw. While there have certainly been some shocking episodes before, this is the first episode of "The Walking Dead" to ever make me feel like that. In fact, only 2 shows have ever done that to me: "Game of Thrones" and "Breaking Bad". I would say that this show is in some mighty fine company there. Not only was this episode jaw-dropping, stunning, and emotional, but it set up the show for a second half of similar quality. This will be the first time that we have seen the group on the road for an extended period, and that is a very intriguing premise. No matter what happens in the second half, this episode will be one we look back on when the show is done and talk about as truly game-changing. While this does give away my score, the first half of this season has earned two 10/10's from me, which is the same number of 10's I would have given in all 3 previous seasons combined! Scott Gimple and his team have surpassed all of my expectations this year, and this episode was the cherry on top of the first half of the season. (continued at http://www.ign.com/blogs/ao66/)

The final showdown between Rick and The Governor, a phenomenal episode
Holt34410 July 2020
Too Far Gone is in my opinion one of the best episodes in The Walking Dead. Some people argue about that Rick's group lose their home too much and that is true but you have to see the reality behind it, the Farm got overrun whilst people destroyed the Prison as unfortunately people and this case Philip 'The Governor' wants revenge and a safe place to live and we know people can be dangerous.

This episode has some of the best acting of the season, Andrew Lincoln and David Morrissey has the strongest performances and it should be them who shine as it's ultimately between their characters. Like how the focus is against Rick and Negan in the All Out War story arc. We know from the previous season and this that Rick was almost too far gone and Philip is too far gone, so the showdown between them is on a physical and psychological level and it makes for some magnificent drama.

From the technical stand point of the episode, it was wonderfully directed by Ernest R. Dickerson. He's one of those directors that always does a great job and captures the true vision of what The Walking Dead should be, he has an eye for the story and script. Whilst Michael E. Satrazemis was the cinematography of this episode and it was nicely handled. So many nice and great shots! The editing was also fantastic, it flowed so well. The different perspectives and all the action. Well done. The mud zombie, just wow. Greg Nicotero continues to create some fascinating zombies. The whole makeup and special effects department did an excellent job.

This has to be on the top five best mid-season finales if not on top three, it's an episode you will never forget, it's memorable in that way, from who it was that died and the how action packed it was. There's good and bad action but the best is meaningful and impactful, this was meaningful action that has consequences for each single character. What a superb mid-season finale.

Gut-wrenching masterpiece!!
and_mikkelsen24 January 2024
Holy.. mother of god..

I have no idea where to begin! So much just happened so fast that I am struggling to comprehense it! This was insane! Very few episodes of TV can deliver at this level! Not only PEAK Walking Dead, but also some of the best TV!

This was an emotional gut punch of chaos! I felt like my heart got stapped over and over! You wanted to feel something, but there was no time! It was just like this world.. no time to mourn! You would fear for everynone! Every bullet and explosion was stressfull! No breaks as the characters struggled! Only when the episode ended.. you could allow yourself to realize what you just saw!

The action and directing was the BEST! Perhaps some of the best action of the entire show!

Ricks epic monologue was some of the best! Perfectly capturing how humans have lost their humanity in this world, and that it is never to late to turn back! Its your choice to keep your humanity or not!

This was some of the BEST this show has delivered and will forever be remembered!

Dangerous minds
TheLittleSongbird9 September 2018
Had heard nothing but great things about 'The Walking Dead' from friends and IMDb reviewers. It took a while to get round to watching, both from being busy and also not being sure whether it would be my cup of tea. Finally getting round to it a few years ago and slowly working my way through it, having had a very long to watch and review list, 'The Walking Dead' turned out to be very much my cup of tea and as good as the hype made it out to be, have found it extremely addictive.

All the previous Season 4 episodes were for me very good to great, though the two previous Governor-centric episodes were somewhat divisive here. "Too Far Gone" is easily one of Season 4's very best and one of the best of the show overall, a return to the tense, action-packed and gutsy kind of episode instead of the quieter action-light kind of episode. It is yet again a strong reminder of how Seasons 1-5 of 'The Walking Dead' to me were absolutely brilliant and seeing the show in its full glory days (Season 6 was uneven, Season 7 was a huge disappointment and am still debating whether to watch Season 8). It is as emotional, complex and as tense as one would expect, at the same time it has adrenaline and guts.

It still shocks me at how an intelligent, well-made (so much so that it is easy to mistake it for a film) show about zombies could be made when so many films have tried and failed abysmally to do so.

Like all the episodes of the show, "Too Far Gone" is incredibly well made in the production values, with gritty and audacious production design, photography of almost cinematic quality, effects that look good, have soul and are not overused or abused and pretty frightening make-up. The music is haunting and affecting, having presence but never being too intrusive.

The writing is intelligent and thought-provoking, not as talky as some of the previous episodes, with lots of tension and emotional resonance and shows signs of character complexity and multiple layer storytelling. The more eventful parts are thrilling and terrifying as well as uncompromising, lots of adrenaline and guts.

Appreciated the ever strong and still progressing story, where a lot happens and full of different strands without being confused or over-stuffed, and character building, which the episode has a bigger emphasis on, and that the pace is rarely dull or rushed, with a taut intensity in the more tense parts. The character writing and the character interactions are what is particularly great here, Herschel and the Governor especially well done.

Everything is nicely paced without rushing through the more important parts, much of it being very taut. The world building is already stunningly immersive and effective. Direction is smart and atmospheric while the show throughout has been strongly acted. Particularly David Morrissey, Scott Wilson and Andrew Lincoln.

Concluding, simply brilliant and one of the season and show's best. 10/10 Bethany Cox

Wow! Truly amazing! Best season so far!!!
lbrammer-757-1136232 December 2013
This season of the walking dead has been the best so far, I've enjoyed all of the previous seasons but this one takes the cake! For anyone who likes action, drama, suspense and of course zombies you will defiantly enjoy this season! And the walking dead in general! so don't let the uptight haters who want everything to be perfect deter you!

Now A quick review on episode 8 "too far gone" il start by saying this is the best episode of the walking dead yet, it was simply amazing it's what the people wanted from the season 3 finale but we didn't get but boy am I glad they left it until now, there's was times in this episode where I well and truly didn't know what was going to happen it really did keep you on your toes and let you know that no one is safe at anytime! There were a few predictable moments but It still kept you guessing. I had goosebumps all the way through the second half of the episode and I won't lie I did shed a tear which goes to show the emotion in this episode! It's an end of a era and the start of something new, I will be chomping at the bit to find out what happens next... 10 out of 10!

Best Episode of the Series!
g-bodyl30 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is the eighth episode of the fourth season of the Walking Dead. I will not be hard-pressed to say that it's my favorite episode of the series. The episode is not about the walkers for once, but the relationship between two "nations." This is the episode where the Governor makes his final assault on the prison which culminated in the heart-breaking loss of Herschel. The ending is also quite sad, heart- breaking sad.

In this episode, "Too Far Gone," The Governor takes Herschel and Michonne captive to overtake the prison and he issues an ultimatum to Rick to leave the prison. But Rick refuses to back down and thus a war breaks out with both sides suffering major losses.

Overall, this was a fantastic episode, probably the best episode of this season so far. There were many emotional moments ad it's a shame we had to lose such an influential figure like Herschel. This is the end of an era as it seems the prison is no more. I rate this episode 10/10.

Utterly depressing but very good filmmaking
snoozejonc3 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The Governor gives the prison group an ultimatum to vacate the area.

I cannot say I enjoyed this episode, because the subject matter is so downbeat. However, I do appreciate what a great piece of filmmaking it is.

The big theme of series 4 so far is whether or not characters can 'come back' from what they have done and experienced in life so far. This episode answers some of those questions in a very hard hitting way. Humanity is destined to destroy itself when certain leaders have power and people are prepared to follow them. You only have to research various atrocities committed throughout history to find out that in chaotic situations, seemingly decent people are capable of the most idiotic and horrific acts of violence and destruction.

When all hell breaks loose in 'Too Far Gone' we are presented with some of the most intensely violent action of the show so far. Technically it is incredibly well done. It is brutal, suspenseful, and afterwards you might need to recover in a similar way to the famous opening scene of 'Saving Private Ryan'. The cinematography, art design, acting, editing and direction is all top drawer.

I struggled with some aspects of the writing. Personally I think there are contrivances in the plot to bring about the big event. The Governor makes a big speech and then everyone says they 'are in'. This is a man who they just met who says he wants to do it peacefully but they must be prepared to kill if necessary. Fair enough. The same people are offered the prison in a shared arrangement by someone else they just met, and the Governor's response is to hack open a prisoner's neck in an obviously vindictive act of terror. Aside from one dissenting voice everybody follows him like sheep. Personally I don't think the writers did enough to make that situation plausible. Perhaps I am giving humanity too much credit as there are a lot of sheep in the world but it felt like a stretch to me.

That is my only gripe with the episode as everything else works fantastically well. The performances of actors like David Morrissey, Andrew Lincoln and Scott Wilson are superb as ever.

For me it's an 8.5/10 but I always round upwards.

One hell of an episode!!!
chandar-moles3 December 2013
This is my 1st ever review in IMDb...I would consider this episode to be one of the best so far in this series...lot of twists...it indirectly says that no character is permanent..thats the thing that keeps Walking Dead a class apart from other series...if you think its high time this series needs a twist or a change(from the last couple of episodes) then this is it...of course it has a few loop holes here and there(as we know nothing is perfect)..but its these kind of episodes that keep the story and our interests alive !!! of course its going to be a mix of emotions for sure...I have to say that the pillar of support for Season4 has been the background score...this episode is no exception...waiting for Feb 2014 !!!

Warning: Spoilers
Just finished mid season final of The Walking Dead! what the hell!!! what an episode!!! the title is the summary of that episode "TOO FAR GONE". what did not happen in it??? most of the people wounded and separated!!! overall- IT'S OVER till February! please don't......

the way rick leaded and act in the episode is way too far beyond my praising scale, he got a 100 in 10! tremendous job. michonne did not chop the governor but injured him brutally (maybe dead?). that's the only question I have now. :( and last but not the least, Hershel did not deserve that kind of death. I am hurt. now way to look forward... because people have to survive anyway for us. we can't stop watching that mind blowing show. :)

Brilliant Mid Season Finale
slightlymad221 February 2015
What a mid season finale.

Plot In A Paragraph: As Daryl finds out about what went down with Carol. The Governor convinces his new friends that it is in their best interests to take over the prison and if needed, use force to do so. Not everyone is comfortable with that approach, but go along with the majority. The Governor and his crew appear at the prison and he has two massive bargaining chips with him. (Herschel and Michonne are his prisoners) He tells Rick to be out by sundown. Rick tries to reason with him, but The Governor is unwilling to listen. In the ensuing battle, their are casualties on both sides.

I'm gutted about a major characters death, they will be missed,The entire end credits, plus various production company logo animations, are played in utter silence is very fitting.

I'm also still upset about the Carol situation, hopefully she will come back, and be reunited with her pal Daryl. If it were not for the two episodes about The Governor, Thai would have been a flawless first half to the season.

Warning: Spoilers
This chapter is perfect, it shows us how the governor prepares his people and has an interesting talk with hershel and michonne while they are captured, showing how the governor is a cruel person who only fends for himself and doesn't mind leaving children without parents that are not yours.

After the attack occurs, it begins with the governor threatening Rick and telling him that it can only work his way and that if he doesn't leave prison then no one will have him, he makes us analyze his offer and see how Rick seems to have the odds to lose. Rick's speech is wonderful but in the end he doesn't win anything because the governor calls him a liar and cuts off hershel's head, all the accumulated tension dies with hershel at this moment, we see everyone's desperation and how a war that does not begin it's going to end well no way. The emotional blow is very strong but the chapter keeps advancing.

Seeing the Governor kill Meghan's walker is a pretty hard scene to watch, we see Lizzie and Mika saving Tyreese by killing two of the Governor's people, we see a good scene from Daryl and we feel the tension of everyone escaping until we reach the death of the Governor. Governor, a sword blow from michonne defeats him but it is lilly who ends him with a shot to his face seeing how he could no longer be saved, finally rick and carl believe that judith died which is a very difficult scene to see to end with the last and one of the best shots at the prison, burned down with no one alive as rick and carl leave it behind what was lost in this chapter was wonderful and although the governor eventually died he did not leave without leaving permanent damage to rick's group, taking away his father figure and his home.

This chapter is a work of art that deserves to go down in history as one of the best on all of TV.

What a performance...
louis-1703 December 2013
I watched this episode 4 times in a row. I'm impressed. This is probably the best "Walking Dead" episode from all of them to this date. Like in every episode, here is great camera, great editing, great character development. And tension is always higher.

What a performance by David Morrissey (the Governor), he was great every time, but today he was the best. He steals the show.

The Walking Dead are series who looks best. And when you think there can't be better episode, you'll be denied.

Spoiler alert: some zombies are shot in the head in this episode.

Even this is too far gone, I can't wait for more.
