Robin Williams returns to TV!
studioAT1 August 2021
Robin Williams returned to TV in this comedy which feels like a cross between 'Mad Men' and 'Just Shoot Me'.

The show has obviously been tailored towards his skill set, with lots of opportunities for mad cap improvisation (there's also bloopers at the end of the episode) and also some sentimental moments too.

It doesn't all work, I wish it'd been done in front of a live studio audience where Williams could really have come alive, but there are some funny moments, a scene in a restaurant with Kelly Clarkson especially.

It's good amiable fun.

Very promising episode

Honestly, I was a little leery about the potential for this show; I've never been a big fan of the previous shows starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Robin Williams often has a tendency to take his schtick too far and well beyond the point at which the topic was humorous. However, the first 5 minutes of this show made me forget those reservations and drew me in, almost forcing me to become interested in the main characters and how things would evolve.

The supporting cast members each seemed to fit well together, especially James Wolk who definitely had chemistry with the humor of Robin Williams. Another surprising, but welcome, performance was that of Kelly Clarkson. Her role in this episode blends nicely with the script. Kudos to her acting as well as her singing parts, both of which were a genuine contribution to the success of the pilot.

There is no question this is a classic David E. Kelley style production. If the character depth and story lines continue to be as interesting as the pilot episode, this is sure to be another of Mr Kelley's many impressive successes.

Wow, just wow

If you take out Robin Williams, Sarah Gellar and James Wolk, cut out the schtick the clichés the hyper kinetic mania the cardboard characters and the sappy sentimental moralizing that is every Robin Williams showcase and it's not half bad. But it's easy to see why it was as one and done. There's only so much weight can pile on Robin's shoulders to carry a whole series and have it not be the Robin Williams show of Robin Williams being Robin Williams. Good Morning Patch Adams-nam. It's unsustainable. When every character is chattering at the speed of Robin Williams it's tiring and tiresome. But mostly it's a sad underline to the fact that Robin Williams career had two gears; manic and depressive.
